Ladies and Gentlemen,

Nice to meet you all!
I've only been using Ubuntu for three weeks and never had any prior exposure to Linux. But I'm loving it and I am here to stay!

Hi! every body. I am absolutety new to ubuntu. One of my friend gave me Uduntu CD (Down loaded from Internet) before. I did install it on my desktop along with Window XP. So I had dual boot system. I was able to run both OS on the desk top. But Ubuntu was not not able to recognize network card, usb port, printers etc. I thought may be ubuntu software may be missing some files. Now I have downloaded ubuntu myself on my second Hard drive. I have 2- hard drives. But I did not open the downloaded file to install on the desk top. When I clicked the the downloaded ubuntufiles Icon. Popup window reads- " window needs to know which program created the file". My Questions are -

1- Is it ok to burn this ubuntu downloaded files. And install ubuntu from the burned CD?

2- How to install ubuntu downloaded from my second Hard drive? At this time I have only Window XP Professional with SP-2.

I am very good for Window XP but I have very scanty knowladge about Ubuntu. I am still gathering knowladge about Ubuntu from Internet. Does any of you have basic information for completely new guy like me.
I mean something like Ubuntu for idiots. Any help is appreciated.
I am in NOV- Gainesville.

Cool Awesome. Have been using Ubuntu Gusty now for about month and loving every day that goes by. Got my favorite game installing and running awesome, World of Warcraft and just started to play Urban Terror and Counter Strike with Steam.

But anyways, I'm in Newport News, VA so if there will be any events or meetings where can I go for more information?

I joined the Launchpad team. The IRC channel appears to be dead. I'm in Chesapeake VA and have been using Linux for almost 6 years now. I've been trying to find a local LUG, but can't find one. Anyone interested in trying to start one?

I don't rightly know where Chesapeake is, but there is a LUG in Richmond called the RMLUG:

Chesapeake is right next to VA Beach, about 10~15 mins from the VA-NC border.

There is the Tidewater Unix Users Group. They have meetings in Norfolk at the Lake Taylor Transitional Care Center.

Thank you! I've been looking one for almost a year now. That URL doesn't come up on Google for some reason when using keywords other than TWUUG. Weird.

It doesn't exist. The guy who was the initial point man sort of disappeared and nobody else has picked up the ball.

Well, the Locos are not LUGs in the typical sense. There are several LUGs all over Virginia that you can join, if you like. If you are really committed to getting a Loco going for Virginia, you might try contacting the guy who originally got it started (Travis Newman). You can find his email on his wiki page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TravisNewman). You can also get in touch with the US Teams project (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/USTeams). They're there to support new Loco teams getting started in the US.

Let me know if there's some way I can help. I'm not a committed Ubuntu user, bouncing between Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, and whatever else catches my interest far too often to take the lead on something like this. I would be happy provide whatever support I can, though.

Is this team very active?
No, not really.
By the way, are you on the RMLUG (Richmond Metro Linux User Group) mailing list? I am there, but don't attend any of the meetings since I am only 17.
http://rmlug.org

If you don't mind me asking, what part of Richmond are you on?

West End Henrico. :) And nope, not a member of any LUGs
That isn't so far away. We usually shop in around Shortpump and West Broad Street, if you know where that is. You ought to join the RMLUG, since you are so close. They hold meetings on Three Chopt Rd, off of West Broad, if I am not mistaken.

To join, you can come to virtual meetings in IRC, join the mailing list and/or join the group on launchpad (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VirginiaTeam). That url has information on the rest too :)

Hope that helps!

Howdy folks.

After using linux since about 2001 or so, and using Ubuntu for the last couple years I finally decided to join the VA LoCo. Over the last year or so I've found myself helping a lot of people take their first leap into linux. I'm also a member of the Virginia Tech LUUG :p
