Yes, text editors are great. I bet this question has been asked many times. n_n

My favorite would be nano so far. It's great, don't need to try anything else.

I like Kate, but SciTE and vi are nice too. In windows I use notepad++ and SciTE.

for console / terminal: nano (edit /etc/nanorc and uncomment the syntax coloring)
for X: scite. Syntax highlighting, auto indenting, line numbering, regexp searching, easy and daggone fast

I am actually one of the few users who would use both Vim and Emacs. Quite intriguing, yes?

I LOVE kate.
I like vim better than emacs, but I like kate whenever I'm running X.

Emacs for everything. When on a fresh install, without Emacs, X doesn't start, and I have to configure xorg.conf by hand, now I use nano, before I used to switch to a working computer and study how to use vi cryptic key bindings lo!

Gedit. By far. For CLI editor I used to prefer Jed but as Nano is included by default I'm using that now.

Multi-file GUI: Kate
Single-file GUI: KWrite
CLI: Nano

I'll really have to get around to learning emacs and vi at some point :)

CygnusEd is the best but not available on Linux.
Nedit is cool on Linux, but i generally just use the default Kate.

gedit.

i use nano to edit the xorg.conf file sometimes. i tried to use it in the book i'm writing, but i couldn't get it to wrap the text.

i already put this on the scribes thread, but it works for gedit too.
to make gedit support rhtml files follow the simple how-to here (http://www.bitsbam.com).

Not that I consider myself a VIM expert but I know enough to use it comfortably so it's my editor of choice for most editing and simple programming tasks (plus, I have a sheet with all the keyboard shotcuts in case my memory fails me which is quite often ;-)). If I feel that I need some GUI love I use Kate.
