is there any places i could find some easy how to's or beginners programs for python. i've searched on pythons site as well as their suggested links. i'm mainly doing this becuase i have a friend interested in python and i am too busy with work to help them out with what they exactly need. any help would be appreciated.

Dive into Python is for experienced programmers, not for beginners with no previous programming experience, so it might be a bit confusing.

I maintain a wiki for Python beginners: http://learnpython.pbwiki.com/HowToStart - online books for beginners, tasks to solve, etc.

+1 for both the wiki and the Computer scientist pages I started learning with them and the book Beginning Python from Novice to professional.
