Hey guys,

I wanted to get some input from the ubuntu community out here.

I am a longtime linux user (first distro - SuSE 6.1) since early 1999 or somewhere around there, and since then I have tried out just about every top20 distro.

For the longest time I have been running slack with flux or xfce, but I decided to give ubuntu a try on my laptop. I installed ubuntu, and am extremely happy with it.

Now my dilemma, through all my linux use I never used gnome, mainly because of my bad experiences with debian, and the ugly foot. But running ubuntu with gnome (even the regular install theme), I love it.

However, gnome is short on two major programs that I would like to run natively.
First - rythmbox. Garbage, amaroK is far better.
Second - any bt client. None available that compare to Ktorrent, all I need is a uTorrent equivalent. (encryption support is a must)

I would switch to Kubuntu, but I think KDE is hideous. And I would much rather not install any kde-libs to bloat up (and confuse) my gnome install.
Help!

Why is installing KTorrent and Amarok out of the question? I've run them on Ubuntu, and they aren't that bloated.

What don't you like about KDE? I don't care for Plastik, the default layout, but I find that's it's a lot more customizable than GNOME, and there are many themes that make it look very good.

for your music needs: http://www.exaile.org/trac <--- If I am not mistaken, exaile will be in the Feisty repositories but you can install from there for now

for torrents ... i don't do any torrenting myself, but i do know you can get BitTorrent from the repos as well as Azureus

or:
http://transmission.m0k.org/

or:
http://deluge-torrent.org/

.... hope this helps

Amarok and ktorrent will work on Ubuntu (Gnome) just fine, provided you install them from the repos so that the dependencies are satisfied.

EDIT: Oh, I see you don't want to install KDE stuff! Well, for music, how about Songbird? It's quite a nice player - certainly looks the part, but it lacks some features that Amarok enjoys. I'm confident they'll make an appearance soon though.

Linux mint comes with Amarok
it comes with a few other things also

* Macromedia Flash (replaced with GPL Flash)
* Support for encrypted DVDs
* Windows Codecs
* Support for Restricted formats (MP3 for instance)
* Unrar
* Sun Java 1.5
(and) Flash 9

I cant remember what, if at all, bit torrent client it comes with. I like it because its a pretty easy setup, but at the moment Im using the Feisty beta.

Thanks for all your replies!
Comforting to know there is always support, at least as far as ubuntu goes.

Quillz:
I would rather not install all the kde libs/deps required to run kde apps in gnome. I would rather run gnome, and gnome apps, or run kde and kde apps. I'm not a fan of mixing.
Overall, I don't like kde because of how it looks, due to the single large bar (bottom) and just overall feel. Also, nautilus > konqueror, as a filemanager.

Darthbuntu:
No, I don't like Azureus in the least. Small, light and functional is the complete opposite.
Thanks for the automatix suggestion, I already know about it, but don't really need more help than apt.

maxamillion:
Thanks for your suggestions, as i have never tried exaile, and will give it a shot.
However I have tried both transmission, and deluge. Transmission is a bit too basic, and while deluge is very nice, the backend lib it uses does not support encryption, but otherwise is very promising.

Tomosaur:
Thanks for your suggestion, I havn't tried songbird in some time now, will give it a try again.

slimdog360:
I'm not really looking to switch distros, and the features you list are very easy to get going on ubuntu.

for a small light wait torrent app I highly reccomend rtorrent. Runs in the terminal but can do almost everything utorrent can do.

as for the music app. I'm still searing as well. while amarok is nice it is a bit of a pig having to load kde libs as well.
