View Full Version : Help us generate free advertising for Ubuntu and open source.

March 26th, 2007, 05:54 PM
The goal of this thread is to create a free video marketing campain and form links to other projects that through various free means look to spread the knowledge of Ubuntu and open source. The free video marketing campain is an effort to use digg like sites to direct people to Ubuntu and open source videos on various video hosts in hopes of pushing those videos to the front of the chosen sites.

We should strive to work with the Ubuntu marketing team for direction and ideas

The original thread which got large and had a poor title
It did however have a poll for popularity of the video idea which was consistantly 60% popular 20% unpopular 20% undecided

The things we have to accomplish for this to work

We need to debate on and set a date. I was hoping for one a few months out say late June. How about the last weekend in June we could aim for Friday the 22nd to Sunday 24th.

We need pick our videos to push to the front. I would also like to see some originally generated content. If we were to use some revenue generating sites we would need to transfer the video ownership to someone specific at ubuntu or cononical Ltd.. Who would be that person?

We need to some volunteer bloggers to set up our digg, rootly, and delicious site links to the video sites.

We need to finish our list of video sites to target

We have had some good video suggestions so far
by lyceum
A very cool Vista vs Ubuntu vid
Ubuntu with looking glass
Mark Shuttleworth in the news
Someone's homemade ad

Is this what you are looking for?

as a reference point to compare numbers the number of forum members was 261,790 as of 11:26 march 26

I'm looking for video sites we can use. Here is a good starter list.

just looking at the youtube(www.youtube.com) channels which is arranged by most subscribed per week it only takes 800+ subscribers to get to the first page and here is some more info on channels

general help and info on channels can be found here. the channels themselves have a myspace feel. I don't have a ton of bandwidth so again if anyone is interested in the project and has bandwidth and time to spare.

msn's soapbox is going to be partially down for upgrades for two months I will reevaluate it when it comes back up.

tv.com's top tech video has 15000 views interesting to note a dual boot linux/apple system is a top tech video

www.metacafe.com has its video organized by rating so we get there early and rate our video high sounds easy

revver.com and www.blip.tv both offer ad revenue sharing

also great to note and support would be blip.tv which uses the open theora codec but it probably has mostly open source users so is outside the scope of our ad(preaching to the choir) blip also does advertisement revenue sharing(this would be a great place to host a visual how to series...just thinking)

There are more I have excluded for various reasons. Several I could not figure out how the video was sorted. If anyone wants to add to the list this is merely a starter list.

Some other good information

lyceum is currently marketing some video choices on some friends to get an idea how they react to different video types.

The question has been brought up this may be abuse. As for abusing digg or the video hosts the systems are designed so popular stuff rises to the top if we are interested it is popular. So I don't really think it is abuse.

This was originally supposed to be a generic several distro linux campain but Ubuntu was the only distro that seemed interested.

help make a community created video

I had a thought for a video (see below). I was wondering if anyone works with groups like these and would care to make the clips to be edited together later. This would probably be a project with and in itself requiring its own coordinator and thread.

"I had imagined a video with groups of kids, elderly, office workers, ect... all standing in various scenes saying we use ubuntu together in unison. Then pick a person from each group using ubuntu a kid "(edu)ubuntu's program x taught me x", a grandma "(x)ubuntu helps me use this old computer to keep in touch with family", and an office worker "ubuntu has everything I need" than pan out to a large crowd "ubuntu linux for human beings"

ewtesterman@cox.net is starting a myspace campain become buddies with Ubuntu all over again see his thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=393935

ewtesterman said "I really think the myspace page would do a lot of good. I may just do it but I am sure it would be much better if some of our more talented web developers got a hold of it. just as an example of the layout control I was talking about I have a basic one (my personal page) at www.myspace.com/oscoder Any way good luck with the project. Again I just think that myspace is the largest concentration of the target audience on the web. I went ahead and secured a myspace account and will start working on it in the near future it is at www.myspace.com/use_ubuntu anything you want to add to it just send an email to it ubuntu@ossoonline.com ."

ewtesterman has an initial build of the page down looks great check it out
my goofy mug is in the buddies list under kevin

Well whatever gets done on the marketing side, be sure it's professional. That myspace page looks awful..no offense as I'm sure it will be reworked. If you need anything feel free to send me a PM.

March 26th, 2007, 08:41 PM
well you could give him a hand but it is a myspace page i have never seen one that would win any design awards

March 26th, 2007, 08:48 PM
Please feel free to help with the myspace page it is difficult the way their stuff works and the fact that I am by no means a graphic artist

P.S. I got rid of that background so it looks better now, or I think so anyway. Feed back is desperately needed

March 26th, 2007, 08:51 PM
I would but I don't know anything about myspace. Although on rare occasions I've seen some decent looking ones such as eric claptons (I believe) I think there are sites where you download themes for it...but honestly I dunno.

March 26th, 2007, 09:09 PM
finferflu had mentioned had said i should talk about the target audience and why we are reaching out to these sites. Traditionally the ubuntu and linux information is spread in the technical world on sites that cater to tech professionals and power users. I know much of the community feels the current ubuntu and the next one can appeal to a much broader audience. So to reach out to that audience we are seeking them out where we can easily visually give a feel for Ubuntu.

Can anyone set up a wiki? It would really help coordinate this. Well once we know what we're doing lol.

March 26th, 2007, 11:28 PM
This is only going to take off if we can get people involved. This is going to take 2 things:

1. Make it easy for people to get involved. Most people aren't going to spend an afternoon to make a video for kicks, but we can make it easier for them to do, and make ways for people who don't to get involved. I propose a central website that will serve this purpose. It'll need basic information, about, deadlines faq etc... It will also need to be interactive. So a section for written ad concepts with popularity ratings, will allow people to get their ideas out relatively painlessly and help separate the good ideas from the not so good ideas. Then people could pick up the ball and produce the concepts into video form. Or videos could just be submitted off the bat. There is also existing material that could be ranked. Very much like the firefox flix (it was called that afaik).

2. Spreading the word. People need to know about this effort, and knowing this community I don't see this as a problem.

i don't have time or energy to pursue it till later tomorrow but what about a wiki and a www.blip.tv page working together. I don't think a wiki can provide our video needs nor can a video host provide our community information needs. I choose www.blip.tv for its open theora codec and advertisement revenue sharing. we also need to look at the legalities of moving the posted videos how are they licensed who do they belong to.
If we choose to use blip the site should belong to the official marketing dept so they collect the revenue safetly. I need to talk to official marketing. I meant to do that today but got into other things making a video site list, reorganizing a thread, and helping a ubuntu myspace site

:-( Why do all (by all I mean "most") linux videos on YouTube seem to focus on Beryl.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Beryl (and Compiz, I tried that too, it was nice), but I wouldn't use that to advertise to the baby boomer crowd, and definitely can't have it running when I show anything to a client (not good for business setting).

More testimonials would be nice. :-)

i found this wiki for ubuntu video advertising in the ubuntu marketing area https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/UbuntuVideo

On it are some very nice sites

http://www.ubuntuvideo.com/ a site on the marketing wiki full of youtube links i shot him an email
http://ubuntuclips.org/ a page full of ubuntu howto's very nice

i also shot john little an email he clearly has been on these projects for a while. so i guess i stand corrected you can't manage these things from a wiki!!!

i pretty much email the first paragraph of the thread a link to the thread and a description of the myspace campain and a link there

I hope to here back from these guys soon!

I have been thinking maybe there just isn't enough interest to pull this off right now. While I'm not saying it's a dead project just certain things make it feel untimely. I still have not heard back from ubuntu video or little john. I'm finding my poll numbers a little anemic. I still have no volunteer bloggers(i thought of going blog to blog emailing for help).

I can't say this was a waste we shared some vids. An ubuntu myspace page was born. the ad idea is well thought out and ready to go whenever we want.

Part of the problem with Web 2.0 (not just online video) based advertising is that people only hear you if they want to hear you. The only people interested in hearing about Ubuntu are more technically minded and already know it exists. Ubuntu's word of mouth advertising in this market is second to none, so something like this really isn't necessary. I think what you should do if you want to help out is join the marketing team (of which I am a member) and contribute to existing projects.

i got a little time to give here and there and I'm not completely incompitent. I'm joking about being incompetent yeah i would like to give a hand in small projects.

April 10th, 2007, 04:22 PM
I've been fooling around with myspace a bit and I think I could come up with something decent enough. Can one of you email me the login info etc so I can edit the site?

April 10th, 2007, 08:26 PM

Alright, check it out. Really need a CSS expert to get a better look I think.

April 13th, 2007, 08:48 AM
i would just drop eric a message on the page itself it's not very busy yet

April 13th, 2007, 08:57 AM
How about buying two old PC-s installing ubuntu and beryl on it and donating one to Bil Gates and the other one to Steve Jobs , and make a ducumantery of it ?

April 13th, 2007, 09:21 AM
i would try wozniak at least he would try it plus i have heard he was genuinely nice

April 17th, 2007, 01:10 PM
Hopefully we can include a video of the Indy 500:

April 17th, 2007, 06:52 PM
How about running a community funded 2 page spread in one of the world's big papers or magazines?

a printed ad will definitely have a greater impact than an on-line video.

The Firefox team have already used this approach as part of their spreadfirefox campaign.

April 17th, 2007, 07:10 PM
I'm not good at photo/video/anything editing, but I want to help!

Anything I can do?

April 17th, 2007, 11:57 PM
such a great idea, I think Ubuntu should have a official profile on either metacafe (it would generate some income to be reinvested in Ubuntu) and or youtube (the most popular one). Personally I will try to record some tutorials and submit them to ubuntuvideo.com and at same time add all the good tutorials on the same youtube profile.

April 18th, 2007, 01:21 AM
I like the Indy 500 idea, and the magazine spread. I do cringe if money that could go to projects that need help goes to spreading the word. For example I read a while back that the wine developer needed a 64 bit computer to do work on 64 bit wine. That's why I want to generate free advertising so we only add to the community not take away.

I like the Indy 500 idea.

Only 5 days left on this one.
