I will probably wait a couple days to install Feisty. I hear Dual-Booting Windows and Ubuntu has become much easier with the Feisty installation, so I might re-install Windows for a couple days before Feisty is released, then once the release date comes, I will download a .iso disc image and install Ubuntu.

I think I'll stick w/ Edgy a little longer. I am new to the game since I just installed Edgy like 3 weeks ago tweaked things around how I dig it and still learning basics. And for me setting up the dual-booting of Edgy and XP Pro was pretty straight forward, and I know a lot about nothing. Maybe I was lucky... how could Feisty make it any more easier?

for sure will upgrade. I've tried the beta and am glad to have updated banshee among other things.

I will wait for a couple of weeks and then try a live CD..from there I will judge if I upgrade there and then or way a couple more weeks.

When I first tried Dapper it had bad support for AMD chips and my machines did not boot, a month latter things changed.

So I will wait for a few more bugs to be iron out before the change

I'll do it right away. I was thinking of trying the beta and all, but I'll just stick to the official release.

Likely wait some time as still having printer trouble in beta version... Like it otherwise, so I won't wait long.

Update: Newbie mistake... I put the wrong IP address of my printer in the set up. Working now! Can't wait for the final release. Might be about time for a new computer to go with it!

right away... but released version, not beta.

I have already installed the beta on all of my PCs. I started testing with Herd 3 and have really liked what I have seen.

When I did the upgrade on my laptop though everything seemed slower for some reason. Instead of fighting with it though I reinstalled with the Beta CD and now all is good again.

If you are not already running with a separate /home partition then I highly recommend that you consider it. Check out this link for more info on why this is a good idea. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

I never liked edgy and i will move to feisty as soon as i got a little free time to personalize it like my family is used.

I think i will not even wait for final version. Sick and tired of the nth problems that constantly arise with edgy... even beta, feisty can't be worst then what i got now.

But i never upgrade, always do clean installs. I loose to much time on the past dealing with problems with updates. Nice concept but for me never worked correctly.

I will wait for the official release, then install it on a spare hard drive. If I find it is worth the change, then I will make the comittment and upgrade my current Edgy install. Otherwise, I'll just stay with what I have. The only things not working under Edgy are the battery status in gnome-power-manager (but gkrellm gives proper values so I use that) and reliable suspend to ram (but suspend to disk works well and doesn't consume precious battery power).

I had Feisty herd 5 on 2 of my 4 machines, but had to move one back to edgy (trying out LinuxMCE). When the time comes, I will almost certainly update my desktop fairly quickly. My fileserver can wait (I just moved it up to Edgy), my Laptop is already on Feisty, and my second Desktop is up in the air. I'm working on obtaining a TV Tuner card to put in it, so I can make it a full-fledged media center PC.

I'm running a dual boot system with Ubuntu Edgy and Kubuntu Feisty. I'll go with the final version of Kubuntu when it is released, but will hold off on the Ubuntu for a while. It's my production machine and requires I maintain a stable environment. I like to keep a partition with a "bleeding edge" version separate until I know I can get everything working before switching my main program. As they are on the same machine, the hardware will be the same, so what works in one will work in the other.

I have my partitions set up like that, root/swap/home/xp. Very newbie question, but since my /home has its own partition could I upgrade and keep all the custimizations I've made to my desktop and the panels? And would I lose any programs? Sorry to ask I just have never upgraded an o/s before, always done fresh installs even on Windows.

biohypnotix,

I just did a fresh install over the weekend. If you have a separate /home partition then you will keep the customizations that you have made. The apps that you have installed will be upgraded too.

If you do a fresh install and tell the installer not to format the /home dir then you will also keep the customizations that have been made but the apps will have to be reinstalled. The good news is that the apps most likley have a .app dir in your /home/username folder so once they are installed the settings that you have will still be there.

It is always a good idea to do a full system backup though to be on the safe side. Some apps keep their configs in /etc so you may want to look there too.

I've been running Feisty since Herd3 on my two machines -- my primary laptop and my parent's older desktop. All has gone well, and I especially love the improved network manager when it comes to dealing with my wireless. Improved Beryl support is also a plus, since Beryl seems to run just plain better on Feisty.

Since I'm on a laptop all the time, I pay attention to power management, and while it still has a long way to go under Ubuntu, I think that Feisty has made great strides. With my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6102) the battery now reports charge and time remaining more accurately, although that's still not all that great.

But overall, Feisty is a nice, stable, polished release.... can't wait till everything is stable (post-release).

I'll install it within a couple of days of the final release; my current edgy install is fracked up, but I don't have the time to fix it now, when I know I'm going to want to upgrade anyway.

I'll probably wait till there are some Feisty tutorials. The kind you see on psychocats.net are all for Dapper and Edgy. There are also countless other sites that will need to update things to include Fiesty.
So I'm looking forward to upgrading but will likely wait till end of april or mid may.

i was wondering since i'm new to ubuntu how the actually upgrade is. Like is it windows and deletes pretty much everything on your hard drive. or does it keep personal files. or there's not really much change? thanks!

I just re-installed using Feisty today and I love it, no problems so far.
@tcebak: it is possible to upgrade over the net or using the alternate install CD, and I did it with the upgrade from dapper to edgy but I don't reccomend it. I just ended up reinstalling everything. You can however create a separate /home partition and reuse that like I do.

I've been running Feisty as my development machine for the last month without any problems. I keep it up to date daily with the new package releases and i run Beryl. If only Windows was as stable as this Beta (Alpha last week). I'll just keep updating the way i am now. GJ Ubuntu!

I have spent allot of time setting up Edgy. It is running perfectly with Beryl 0.2.0. Therefore, I will play the "wait and see" game for a few days.

This is when I would like to see more "Signatures". Even though people say it is running great on their computer, if it is a very generic setup, it may not be a good example. "Signatures" help everyone.

I had my testing machine running Fiesty Herd 5 for a week or so. But so many of things that I tried either didn't work or had harmful results that I placed Edgy back on it.

I will upgrade soon after Fiesty goes stable, but on the same day? Probably only on my testing machine.

still new to Ubuntu here and I will wait. Edgy works perfectly on my machine. I tried fiesty and had nothing but problems with my nvidia card. It is probably my fault but I'll wait just the same. I have everything set up just like I want...even beryl so I'm not going to mess it up.

Well Fiesty is working with my AMD 4600+ X2, MSI K9A, x1950 Pro VC, Seagate 320G 10.2 SATA II Hard drive.

But then I just did that latest 140MB update and now the tool bars dont load and no apps work... bleh that sucks!

So I'm reinstalling Fiesty and not updating till I know its safe!

Damn this sucks, but that's BETA I guess..

Feisty if you have any ATI cards. Cause last night I went to liveCD in Feisty Beta, I was surprised to see 1024x768 resolution. So Feisty has better ATI Support

Yes, Feisty has much better support for ATI, and the proprietary driver seems to work sooooo much better. I can now play tuxkart, supertuxkart, and Planet Penguin Racer with no lag!!! I'm really starting to like Feisty, and it's still only beta.

Never could get Edgy to work on my old box because of video card problems. I downloaded Feisty beta and did the install about an hour ago, it works great.

Normally I wouldn't, and certainly would not recommend doing that, but I've had Feisty on my desktop computer for a week now and I must say it is looking and feeling very nice.

The 5 second shutdown alone is well worth re-installing for!

I'm not sure about doing an upgrade though, that's something I would never do for several reasons, one being that recent research shows that hard disks that are re-written often tend to retain data better over long periods.

So theoretically a format and re-install every six months should (hopefully) keep my HDD humming along nicely :).

Well, that's my excuse anyway :).

Well, since I had a new install of Edgy, I decided to try the Beta upgrade route. Been running for 72 hrs now with no problems so far. Even for a Noob like me it was quite easy....1hr download time and about 1 hr to upgrade the system.

Update: Well, I couldn't wait. I decided to get one leg up on the process. I upgraded from Edgy to Feisty last night.

I had Beryl 0.2.0 running perfectly on Edgy and it runs equally as well on Feisty.

The only glitch that I had in the entire process was, I was dropped into the Terminal without GUI when it rebooted. So, I reinstalled the latest nVidia drivers (1.0-9755) and it works great.

Most programs, such as OpenOffice Writer 2.2, run faster than in Edgy. I am very pleased so far.:)

Only had installed Ubuntu 6.10 last week and just upgraded from Ubuntu 6.10 to Fiesty 7.04 to sort a wireless network problem, which worked (couldn't connect to WEP routers, WPA was okay). Upgrade was a breeze, I'm beginning to really like Ubuntu OS.

Did notice one thing when I upgraded, before with Edgy I hadn't sorted out mounting the FAT32 C & D drives I had, only had a Ext3 and Swap showing, but when I upgraded and looked at available drives I can see and access everything, so now can see the D drive with all my 1426 mp3's in it.:guitar:

Upgraded 2 weeks ago.

Kept using the machine for browsing and stuff while the upgrade was busy (try that Microsoft) and didn't experience any blocking issues.

Boot times and shutdown are screaming fast.
Beryl works on my Intel 945 card
overall stability is top
VMWare works (after initial install issues)

I only had good experiences so far. For me, Feisty is the best release ever.

Ya, this OS is amazing. I have installed approximately 150 updates in the past two days, since upgrading. I only had to reboot when the upgrade from Edgy to Feisty was complete (Try that also, MS.):lolflag:

Well, I've upgraded to Beta and I'm pleased with the results. There was a looong download (2 hours  ) and there is a longer boot than with Edgy. The final version should be very good indeed.

Nope not upgrading for two reasons, because I don't want to go through trouble of changing the kernel for the
2.4.26 one. Why that one? Because the new one has no support for legacy hardware.

Not sure, yet, just recently put Edgy on my laptop and am not sure if I am ready to part with it yet. On the other hand, I do like the talk of media codecs and increased ATI support. Checking out the beta...

I really need to format my system and reinstall (video problems, Xorg taking up 100% cpu, but only on one of my two monitors, and at seemingly random times...).

Problem is, my Nortel Apani VPN client doesn't seem to work in Feisty. I'll test it on my laptop soon (probably tomorrow during/after the installfest) and see if it works. If not, I'll have at least one edgy machine for the time being (or my Windows XP machine in VMware...)
