they only just came out here a couple of days ago so this may be old news for all you yanks. But hay it is still pretty cool for me. I got a copy of resistance with it which is alright but for anyone who is thinking about getting a ps3 also, Id recommend getting a different game with it.

Whats in the box is pretty bare bones, which for the price is pathetic, but at least I'll get a copy of casino royal on blue ray when it comes out. It doesn't even come with a demo disk, but rather you have to download the demos which are about 700MB each. So make sure you have a good internet connection.

The way everything is set u is pretty nifty, I can use the thing as a central hub for a media center in my house (if I had all the other pieces to go with it). The blueray player is useless as I dont have a HD tv.

Anyone else gotsed one???

edit: arghhhh, who edited my bad grammar?? roar

Nope, they want 620 euros for one over here and I refuse to pay that for a console.

I would rather buy myself a nice new graphics card, sound card, upgrade of the motherboard, and a nice faster cpu, don't forget the r.a.m instead of a PS3. If I had to choose a console, it would be Xbox 360 since they get all the cool games.

I gave my son a Xbox 360 for christmas , its a great console but it lacks a lot of the features the PS3 has.

that was part of the reason I got it, I wanted to get another PC to put next to my tv. That way I could play music through my home theater (when I get one that is) and all that other stuff. Now after getting a ps3 Ive found I can put all my music and movies on it, but I havent tested this so I could be wrong. It seems as though if I put in a cd I can copy the music onto the hdd in the ps3. How cool is that. But again I havent tested it yet.

Far too expensive for me at the moment, and even if I did have the money, I'd wait a while until some great games come out. Is there an SSX planned? I remember I got that with my PS2, and to say it was one of my favourite ever games would be an understatement.

The PS3 just doesn't really get me excited at the moment. The racing one looks pretty good (the one similar to Destruction Derby? I can't remember it's name), but the idea of micro-payments and no rumble are just irritating. Plus, Sony have messed up pretty badly recently. I hope MGS4 will be amazing, and I hope I'll be able to play it when it's released, but at the moment, price is way too high.

Here in Ireland most of the shops charge between 650 and 700 Euro for the console. Sometime including a game or two. Even with the games I believe that this is too much for a gaming console.

However IF someone doesn't have a pc yet it is a good investment as you can put GNU/Linux on it and have it work as a pc. The only bad point is that 3D acceleration is not working on that system. But that only prevents you from running Google Earth, Beryl and stuff like that. For gaming you should be using the normal mode anyway.

I would buy one if it was EUR399.00. Until then I will wait...

Tried it out the first week it came out. Had a friend with good connections. I think it sucked compared to the Wii (my own value judgment only). Maybe because of the lack of time spent on it but it felt really boring. Nothing really new. Man i spent hours on the Wii when I first tried it.

darn it I JUST HAD a dream last night about me owning a wii.. cuz I dont have one :P. Anyways I hope you enjoy ur ps3s (whoever has one). Im a 360 fan but I don't like to be too bias. The ps3 is an awesome machine, I just wish sony didnt spend so much money on loading it with too much stuff instead of just allowing addons for the future. That way the prices wouldnt be so high on the retail end, and people wont end up spending extra money on something they may only use once or twice, or even never. But really it seems like a lot of people have put the ps3's hardware to good use, primarily the linux users lol.

yeah, i bought one just after xmas (i'm in the US). i love it! i went out and bought a 1080p hdtv for it so i could play games and blu-ray properly, and boy, is it nice! i have a good 5.1 sound system, but guess i need to upgrade to 7.1 to fully utilize resistance and the future of blu-ray sound (but, since i just bought a tv, it'll be a year or two before replacing my av unit). yeah, it's expensive, but since it's also a blu-ray player, it's cheap. if you don't want to use blu-ray, it's tough to spend $500 for a ps3. if only we could buy a wii here in the US (none to be found, except on ebay, and i refuse to pay more than msrp for anything).

I don't know why people like the ps3. The hardware in the xbox is superior, it's cpu and graphics card are faster. The cell processor was never meant for gaming, it was originally made for MRI imaging machines. The ps3 has too many physical limitations so it can never surpass the 360.

Blu-ray is for watching movies, it's not a gaming feature. 99.9% of the games will never use the extra capacity offered by blu-ray.

At least the wii is innovative, but ps3 is the most expensive.

I got my PS3 on launch day. I've always loved it, even during the times when there were only a few games out.
Moviewise, Blu Ray is superior, I think. It looks AMAZING on an HDTV.
And to the guy above me that says 360 has all the cool games: WRONG. Just because you have two dozen Halo imitations doesn't make the 360 any better. Sure, PS3 has less games, but to me, they're better than any 360 game I ever played.
- Motorstorm
- WarHawk
- Ratchet and Clank
- Ridge Racer 7
and of course, the dozen or so cross-platform games, such as Guitar Hero III and other ones.

The one game that I truly can't wait for is Half Life: The Orange Box.

actually its hard to tell which has the better hardware, because they are both better in some ways and worse in others. doesnt really matter though ps3 has a poo lineup of games, the controller is a disgrace compared to the 360's oh and did i mention mass effect is out within 10 days? also live is so much more developed. but the xbox 360 is a peice of poo when it comes to the 3red lights of death, and the noidr of the damn thing. oh and it doesnt allow you to run linux on it :P gotta expect as much from ms. also mass effect is out soon.

the wii is a great console, for non gamers. shouldn't be in the same class as the ps3 and 360. i am not bias, within a year i shall have all three.

Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I'm of the impression that if you buy a PS3, you can't really complain too much because you have to justify to yourself all the money you've blown on your purchase. Whereas other consoles allow you to keep most of your money for other stuff. :)

Graphics are pretty and all.. but I like the concept of the Wii. I swore I was done buying consoles after the Sega Dreamcast (most innovative console for its time since the Wii.), but the Wii changed my mind the first time I played tennis against a co-worker on Wii Sports. The graphics aren't any better than the 360 or the PS3, but the games (in my opinion) are more interactive and fun than anything I've played on the 360 and PS3. Gears of War? I've played first person shooters since Wolfenstein 3d. Yes, its very pretty, but its still an FPS: a genre thats going on 2 decades old and losing its dynamic. How excited can one REALLY get about another half-life?? It's regurgitated stuff from 1997-1998. Surely valve can do better.. How about Final Fantasy? Yeah, great series, but .. eh.. I just can't stay into them anymore. I played up to FF7 to completion and just lost interest in anything after that to the point that it got shelved. They cared more about outdoing themselves in graphics than in good story content. Maybe its just me, but graphics alone are not enough anymore. I work with 3d real time rendered earth models on 25 foot, 8 megapixel screens. Nothing canned on a PS3 or Xbox 360 is going to wow me enough to spend the money simply to see the prettiest games being made. You have to offer more than the hotplate games, recycled content, and polish that systems have been overstuffed with for so long if you want me to spend money on your console. I like games that are fun, innovative, interactive and challenging first and foremost. That doesn't require them being the prettiest.

PS-3? its a pretty console, but I think my money was way better spent on my Wii setup. Besides, the pr0n industry is going HD-DVD so your blue-ray investment will likely follow suit with betamax in the US. Thats what ultimately killed betamax in the US when competing against VHS for market dominance. Superior form factor, too expensive to record and re-sell. Sony has always tried to carve a proprietary corner in all technologies its invested in, and historically its hurt them more than its helped them. (Betamax, MD, Stic-Memory to name a few)

I also like all the virtual console games (they just added neo geo a while back) I'll put Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 against 90% of games that come out today in difficulty and addictiveness.

I really don't understand why people defend the ps3. If you look at the benchmarks, 360 hardware is superior. Development costs for the 360 games are lower than ps3.

Blu-ray is great for movies but worthless for games. Higher capacity doesn't equal better games. Just think back to the age of the Sega CD, it didn't have any better games than cartridge based consoles. It just had games with more video cut scenes, since that's all that developers used the extra capacity for. So at the end, you ended up watching useless cut scenes instead of playing the game. Many early genertion CD based consoles suffered the same demise, such as Panasonic 3D0. In fact alot the games which come on multiple dvds, are usually japanese rpgs with lots of cut scenes. Most american developers don't need the capacity of blu-ray, so it's just an unnecessary cost.

I really don't understand why people defend the ps3.

Because it runs very quietly and is quite likely to be significantly more reliable than the oh-so fragile Xbox 360.

That and the fact that a PS3 is also a fully functioning PC with the designed in facility to install and run Linux.

So a good console, HiDef video player and PC all in one box makes it very much a bargain.

It is also very expensive, which means a lot to people. I agree though, the XBox 360 with its red ring crap really makes me wonder why people bother with it... but they do. Unless the newer models have gotten better or something.

If you price up hardware to do all that a PS3 can do, suddenly it doesn't seem quite so expensive?

Perhaps. I suppose I'm just a fan of cheap entertainment. I don't like spending a lot of money for fun. :)

It's also the reason I've given up upgrading all the time for PC gaming. I just can't justify it anymore.

I considered this for a moment, but once I quantified it, I realized that that's not true.. By the time I bought 3 more wii controllers and chucks, and a virtual console pad, it added a significant amount to the cost of the system, but not $500. For $500, I have four fully equipped controllers, a virtual consola game pad, a Blue Tooth sensor bar, a handful of Wii games and Virtual Console games, and Guitar Hero III w/ guitar. That is a significant amount of entertainment compared to the cost of the core PS3 system.

I´m thinking in buying a Wii, in a store around here i saw it at the price of 243 euros:)

Originally i tough in buying a new computer to replace my current one ( P4 1,7. 512 ram, radeon 9250 ), but to mount the machine it would cost me around 1000 euros, and i would have to dual-boot to play games, plus upgrading it some time to time to keep current.

This way i keep my machine for a few more years ( that seems faster and faster at each ubuntu release, and besides gaming does everything i want), and i still have enough money to invest in a few games.

Add on the cost of a PC, because that's what a PS3 becomes when you install Linux, it's a dual-booting GameOS Console and Linux PC.

You can add the cost if you like, but the ability of my gaming console to dual-boot isn't a selling point for a $500 console. Yes, I am aware it can run linux. some peers of mine actually created a CELL cluster using PS3's.. I was able to ISOboot linux on my Dreamcast. You could also run linux with the first gen X-box. its not necessarily a new concept, so why would I be willing to pay more for a system that supports it? I wouldn't want to factor in the cost of a PC, because that is not something I primarily care about when I am buying a gaming console. (and because I have a pretty hot system as it is.)

I could throw out the same scenario you did about the PS3 about the X-box 360 in that its a DVR, a media center PC, yet still cheaper than a PS3.. If I wanted that kind of functionality, I'd be buying a 360. As it is, I want very fun and innovative games. Sorry, but I think the wii reigns over both systems there IMO. If I wanted to run linux and throw it on my HDTV, I could do it cheaper than a PS3 could, and spend the remainder of the money on a Wii. ;-)

Indeed it is old hat, even some models of the PS2 could run Linux.

You're not looking at it objectively. Perhaps I detect a little bit of Wii fanboy-ism? ;-)

From a cost/functionality/reliability point of view a PS3 is an utterly outstanding piece of kit, whether you or I as individuals want to buy one or not.

As for the X-Box 360, there's no way I would ever gamble my cash on the red ring of death.

hehe no, not at all. If I were a wii fan-boy I wouldn't have talked up a 360! And.. I'm probably too old now to be called a fan-boy of anything.

yeah, I've been hearing RROD so much now that my ears are bleeding. I agree, the stats are horrible. That being said, it is Microsoft... If you were expecting perfection, thats on YOU! lol It doesn't excuse the failure rate, but it puts it into perspective.

The Wii is not without its faults either. the VC had some launch issues. It still sucks that there is not a cartridge to VC converter. DVD playback would have been nice to have.. So would a better online multiplayer system. Still, it remains a better gaming console in my opinion for the money and for the fun factor. The 360 may have a high failure rate, but it also touts the best online console gaming experience available, very beautiful graphics, and a better functional use of the system hardware out of the box in DVR and media center options than merely being able to run an OS. Looking at a pretty PS3 game does not shadow a pretty 360 game, and the 360 is cheaper, so I just don't see the benefits for the cost of a PS3.

I will openly say that I despise the ethics of sony electronics across the board. They can put some incredibly innovative products and technologies together, but their greed kills them every time. I have a hard time supporting a company that would practice business EXACTLY like microsoft is today if they could effectively pull it off..

Well being that the PS3 is a 64bit PowerPC derivative, what do you expect it to run? :) Support for the cell processor is in the Linux kernel, and is already there, since almost a year ago.

To take advantage of the mega power of the PS3 a program would have to be specially coded for the PS3, on an individual basis.

i think the ps3 version fixed only the booting.
but the wireless, and sixaxis controller still does not come out of the box which is important of course,

the advantage of it though is, program for one ps3 and works on the rest million of ps3. not the same case with pc hardware.

the yellow dog linux is the official and has breakthrough development, but i wonder why a lot of ps3 users in ps3 forums still go for the powerpc ubuntu.

I also own a PS3. I purchased the 80GB model over 3 weeks ago. How I justified the $500.00 price tag of my PS3. I have a 42" plasma TV that was not seeing its full potential with a standard definition DVD player attached to it. Good Blue-Ray DVD players are still about $400.00. And I still like to game. Upgrading my pc to play current games would cost over $800.00. And the Xbox 360 was not an option since it is an unreliable piece of crap and louder than hell. My brother alone has had 3 Xbox 360's fail on him.

As I see it, for my needs, I could not go wrong with the $500.00 purchase of my PS3. I get a relatively quite Blue-Ray player, modern gaming system, and on top of that, with my current installation of Gutsy on my PS3, I have a full featured PC. My total investment to date with my wireless keyboard and mouse is under $560.00.

It really comes down to what the users needs are and not what people think the better game console is.

And how long till it would require another major upgrade to run the next lot of new games?

Nowhere near as long as the PS3 will stay current for I bet.

Here is Britain, the PS3 costs about $320. In all countries, it would cost much less if not for all the useless features, if it would only focus on what matters, gaming.

Alternative to being cheaper, it could focus on gaming much more and have better hardware for games (more power, anyone?), and still be the same price as it is now, thus greaten the consoles actual value of price.
