It's 1a.m. here, so I'm gona keep this short and to the point.

I want to buy this mouse as it's selling at a great price and my mouse recently crapped out on me:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104016

I was wondering if all the buttons and everything will work in Linux (namely Ubuntu 7.04) out of the box.

Thanks.

I'tl probably work, with hacks to xorg.conf... Personally it took me ages to the configure my mouse to work properly. But will work, if you're willing to spend the time..

Realy, I won't be able to go into mouse configuration and just tell it what all the buttons are supposed to do?

this is the mouse I recently bought: http://www.supplysale.com/Item.aspx?sku=057558MD&sgd=330d308d313d313d315 and it worked fine out of the box. It also has a resolution button that can change the dpi on the fly, but its all hardware related. The only application I used to config the buttons was beryl, but it detected them with no problem, I dont think you should have any problems with yours.

I doubt it .

Will it be hard to configure though? I'm no stranger to xorg.conf, at least when it comes to the video card part of it.

Is there some simple guide I can follow that just tells me to "add this line here"?

I'm using that mouse with my laptop in feisty, and it works just fine. I configured it using the mx510 tutorial, so the search and zoom buttons don't work, but that's fine for me as I don't need/use them in windows either. it's a really nice mouse.

Thanks.I use a seven button mouse that works fine in Linux, specifically Sabayon and it has worked in most distros that I have tested (300+)

Out of the box, no. It will work as a plain old mouse until you configure it. There are a couple very good tutorials here at ubuntuforums and elsewhere that explain the setup:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=277388&highlight=mx+revolution+mouse+setup
http://andy.hillhome.org/blog/2006/09/27/logitech-mx-revolution-in-linux/

EDIT: That tutorial didn't quite do it for me. He wasn't as clear on a few points as I think is necessary, and I wasted a lot of time experimenting and tinkering before I got it working. In hindsight, all the info is there. It's just not quite as clear as it could be, IMHO. Anyway, my MX Revolution works 100% now. I had been running it as a fancy MX-510 for a long time, with no thumb wheel and no tilt wheel switches. /EDIT

I run the VX's big brother, the MX Revolution. Setup is almost identical for it as for a VX, just some of the buttons are different. Works just fine. The MX Rev is the best mouse from Logitech since the MX-510, IMHO.
