Hi all,
I'm Bob from NE PA. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year and a half. No windows in my house for years. I came from Debian Sarge testing - smoke poured out of the back of that PIII 500 machine. Now I'm running a PIII 700 Dell with Dapper. Before that Caldera ( boo SCO) in dual boot with Win 98 - used Win 98 to print and convert Word files to US English so copy editors could spell check. Avid user of Linux since 1999.
Taught my wife how to use Dapper and she loves it - won't go back to Win.
Good luck all

Thagoat signing in from NEPA! Glad to see other Ubuntu eggheads from PA. I was starting think that no one else in NEPA had seen the light. But Bob you have! I've been busy spreading the open-source word to all my friends, but alas, some may never break free from the mind control that ******* has over people. Anyway it's good to know I'm not the only nerd in North East Pencilvania!!

Add me to the list of NEPA Ubuntu users.
I'm using a dual boot right now ONLY because I have a special handwriting font and program that works as a micro in MS Word. So far I can't coax it to run in Open Office with Wine. If it weren't for that, I'd chuck Windows completely.
Where in NEPA are you folks from? I'm in Wilkes-Barre. Appropriately enough, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins farm team.

Greetings to the Ubunteros from NEPA from Harrisburg! Hey if you folks have launchpad accounts, I would love to add you to the Pennsylvania LoCo team. If you don't have a Launchpad account, you can set one up here: https://launchpad.net/+login
(https://launchpad.net/+login)
It's good to hear from other local Ubuntu fans! You guys should think about having a meetup (if you are close enough to each other)!
Let us know if that works out, and I look forward to talking to you again! Once again, if you wish to be a part of the team register in Launchpad and request to join the Pennsylvania LoCo Team.

Wilkes-Barre, that's pretty close to home. I live in Berwick, the most wonderfully depressing of towns. So anyone going to upgrade to feisty next month? I want to see the new Gnome and the new kernel. But I have so many hours l of installs and tweaks into edgy that I'm a little apprehensive about a fresh install. And from what I understand the settings transfer wizard is still kinda buggy. Guess I'll just play it by ear!!

thagoat,
I was in Berwick for a funeral three weeks ago. We go up there a couple times a year for my wife's family.

Sorry that it was a funeral that brought you here, but that's pretty wild that your wife has family here. I've been living here for 13 years now. My whole family lives here. Is your wife originally from Berwickor nearby?

My wife is actually from Towanda, but her mother grew up near Berwick, and most of my wife's cousins are still in the Berwick area. She did go to Bloomsburg U. though, so she did live close for 6 years (got her masters in speech language pathology).

Berwick! Cool. There's a wonderful glow to Berwick. Oh, wait, that's the power plant! :) (If you work at the power plant, no offense was intended.)
I'm going to upgrade to Feisty when it comes out. I'm using Edgy now. I'm a little disappointed to hear that the Transfer Wizard is buggy. That was one of the features that I was looking forward to. I have so much stuff that I want to port over. What exactly have you heard?
BTW someone was mentioning launchpad. I'm on launchpad as Dave Jaye. That's my stage name, I use it on-line to protect the innocent.
I spent a lot of time in Towanda when I was a kid (Almost 40 years ago.) I'm from Tunkhannock originally and friends of my parents lived in Towanda.
Who would have thought that an OS would be capable of bringing people together like this.

The world is definitely shrinking! Btw, I will be upgrading to Feisty on my two laptops first to see how it goes. I'll update the desktop later after I make sure nothing catastrophic will happen.

Berwick sure does glow. Do you know how hard it is to sleep at night when you glow in the dark??? No I don't work at PPL. I work at Wise Potato Chips. That's almost as bad, ha!
Yeah kinda crazy how one little OS could introduce people how would have never otherwise met. I haven't heard too much about specific bugs in the transfer app, just that there are bugs. Maybe by the release date (April 27th I believe) all the beta testers will have done their jobs and the bugs will be gone.
Bret says he's going to install Feisty on his laptops. I have a small 4 gig HD I pulled out of my girlfriend's old PC that I'll probably install Feisty on to test it out. But most likely I'll just take the Nestea plunge and install Feisty on my main HD, but I'll cruise the forums for about 3 weeks before I go Feisty completely! Safety first!!!

Hi, Chad here.
Just thought I'd make a little intro.
I'm in MontCo now but I lived in Philly proper for about 2 years. Before that I lived in Northern Virginia.
I chime in on PLUG's (Philly LUG) mailing list, but I not very good at attending meeting.
I've been running Feisty on personal machines for a few months now. I guess I'm more tolerant of running linux distros in development stages (I was a Debian Sid user for 5 years). There were a few hiccups: mainly a kernel upgrade that killed my wireless (broadcom). Overall it is coming along very nicely.

Hello from yet another NEPAn!
I'm Dan from Bloomsburg (work in Wilkes-Barre). I've been using ubuntu since warty. I'm a dual-booter since I'm a huge Day of Defeat:Source fan.
It's good to see some more geeks in the area.

Hi Dan. You commute from Bloomsburg to WB? I gotta ask, where in Wilkes-Barre do you work? It must be worth it for that kind of commute. In my younger days I wouldn't have thought twice about it but I find as I get older that my tolerance for travel diminishes.
I know that two of us are going to upgrade to Feisty. How about the rest. If not, why not?

Hey I'm starting a thread for Feisty with a Vote!
That will make the thread more "clean" by seperating the Feisty thread from the NE regional discussion. And I can add a another poll (I love those!).

Ha ha, geek here ;) Dan, good to know there's more like us out there huh? But I gotta ask...Day Of Defeat:Source? What might that be? Nevermind I Googled it. Looks like a good game, I'm hardcore into WWII shooters, which is the only reason I purchased the Xbox360. And I just read a blog in Planet Ubuntu last night about someone hacking the kernel and install Ubuntu in the 360. That's great stuff!!

Hello, Y'all!
While not currently living in the Keystone state, I do spend a lot of time in Susquehanna County where I grew up and my remaining family members still reside.
Currently I am co-ordinating a Software Freedom Day event there for September and am engaged in some preliminary discussions for an Ubuntu (Feisty) Release Party in May.
My goal is to some day start a computer recycling/technology rescue program to give away older computers running Linux to non-profit organizations and to low-income families.
Great to see Ubuntu enthusiasts in Pennsylvania and I look forward to getting to know many of the group.

I just read here http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61771 about Dell opting to offer Linux distros with their new desktops and laptops. Wow!! What a great idea. The are many replies to the thread, both pro and con, but what a great way for mainstream America to learn about this great OS!!

I live in Yardley PA. It's about 20 minutes North of Philly in a town right next to Langhorne PA. I've been an Ubuntu/Kubuntu user since 5.04. I started with Kubuntu but moved over to Ubuntu not long after and have been there since. I'm a HUGE open source pusher and I try to "convert" as many people as possible. I've been toying with Linux since RH9 and have been running Linux servers for a handful of years now. I'm an accountant by day and a Linux abuser by night. I blog here and there on opera about Linux

I'm about to attend my first PLUG meeting on April 16th and I'm looking forward to it. I'm very interested in anything open source and push it on people whenever I get the chance. I've successfully converted about 10 people to Kubuntu (KDE appeal is easy draw for Windows users) so far. I would like to be involved in some suggested projects as recycling old PCs with Linux and such. I have a number of technical certs like A+, NET+, MCP, and Linux+. Maybe I'll meet some of you at a PLUG meeting.

Hello all!
I just joined the *buntu community. I tried versions from Badger to now without much luck. I am new to Linux, and had success with 6.10. This will be the longest I have stuck with any version (even though I'm still dual-booting XP for games and flash reasons)
I currently reside in SE PA (Swarthmore) and I plan on attending the PLUG-West meeting on the 16th (really looking forward to learning MythTV)
Hope to get to know you all, and someday give back some of the support I have recieved as a newbie!

I just read on softpedia.com that the October release of Ubuntu will be named Gutsy Gibbon. I much prefer Grannie's Gulash, but that's just my opinion. Anyone else have any names they'd rather see the 7.10 release called?

I thought Garish Goat or Grotesque Goat would be good. I like the idea of a Gutsy Gibbon though. I t conjures up the image of a real swinger who doesn't follow the pack.

Well, I bit the bullet and upgraded to Fiesty. I was skeptical at first. I first tried to upgrade from the network via Update Manager. The file downloads were approximated at 5 hours. So I used the alternate install cd to upgrade. Man, what a breeze to upgrade! All my fears were allayed and I am now a Fiesty Fawn lover. I recommend the upgrade to anyone running Edgy. It will only take a little time and the rewards are multifold! Don't wait, upgrade today!!!

I agree! I had a power glitch in the middle of my download so things got messed up and I had to do a clean reinstall. My only problem was the traffic on the servers. I started the download in the morning, went to work, came home and it was still downloading! Sometimes going slower than dial-up. In the end, however I'm very happy. Some minor issues that had with Edgy are totally cleared up. Everything seems to be more efficient and running faster than before.
I'm a happy camper.

+1 for feisty. I've been running it since Herd3 and have been loving it. Quite an improvement specially compared to the edgy vs. dapper release.

Hello all,
Iamalex pointed out to me that this group exists today, and I think it's fantastic. Joined the launchpad team, joined the IRC channel :) I'm not much of a forum person (can't wait for the mailing list!), but I'll try to hang around some.
I'm a 25 year old Debian Sysadmin for a firm outside Philadelphia called LinuxForce. I've been using Debian since 2002 and started checking out Ubuntu back when Warty was around. I moved to Ubuntu on my laptop about a year and a half ago because Debian didn't like my wireless card, and finally moved from Debian to Ubuntu on my primary machine in November.
In the past I've been more involved with Debian than Ubuntu, I maintain a couple packages for Debian (my package "dglog" made it's way to Ubuntu), use it at my job, and was one of the first contributers to Debian Women (http://women.debian.org) a few years back. Today I'm now an administrator for the Ubuntu-Women Project (http://ubuntu-women.org) and intend to get more involved with Ubuntu stuff as time progresses.
Locally I run the Philadelphia Chapter of LinuxChix (http://phillychix.org) and the PLUG Chapter of Montgomery County (http://www.phillylinux.org/montco.html) (I'm also an admin on the phillylinux.org website - yes we do intend to update those dead sections someday).

Hello all from Greensburg! I've been using Ubuntu for about a year and soon might wipe my last remaining Windows installation!
Quick question, my dad's computer which he has had less than 6 months has pretty much been flooded with viruses and spyware! It has slowed to a crawl! My brother and him have managed to mess it up in that short time. When I go over there this week should I: A) reistall XP and then wait another couple weeks until they cry that they broke it again... or B) Install Ubuntu and any software they might need. I leaning towards B, but they can screw ubuntu up as easily as they can screw xp... then i would have to help them fix it again anyway! Any suggestions?
lamalex
April 24th, 2007, 08:12 PM
it's much harder for them to screw up ubuntu, just don't tell them about how much access to config files they have and they'll never know. go with b go with b! I did it to my family and they're very happy

i did also did this for wife. started with slackware, then moved to ubuntu. she's been using linux for about 3 years now. my sister is installing ubuntu on an old desktop to control a disk changer i sent her last week. i just sent my mom up in Mass an old laptop with Puppy Linux on it (cFlash hard drive). it's only temporary until i get her a desktop setup with ubuntu installed. she's used ubuntu in the past and liked it. converting my older brother very soon too.
one suggestion. make sure you get sshd running and port forward to port 22 on your dad's PC. also, use dyndns.org to give yourself a pseudo-static IP. this is very handy if you want troubleshoot problems or install software remotely for them.
start a new thread if you want more detailed support on this topic. i'll be glad to help :-)

I agree, go with option b and set them up with an easy-to-use and Kick A$$ OS like Ubuntu. And give your poor pc a break from that virus called *******! Ha! And if my girlfriend who could barely send email is able to navigate a Linux OS your dad and brother will be fine with a Linux OS as well. The more people we convert then better it will be for all of us!!
