View Full Version : Urinal? Peanut Butter?

Okay, this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. One of my colleagues insists on calling a Unix Reference Link a "YERL" (almost sounds like urinal if you ask me). This same person also insists on using peanut butter as a graphics format (GIF) aka "Jiff". So here's my pole... Check which one you pronounce.

Yeah, I'm a bit schwag like that. And "pings" are pronounced just that according to the open document and white pages.

"Jiff"

P - N - G

Same except gif as in gift without the t. I've heard it pronounced jiff by some techie people and thought I was saying it wrong but old habits die hard. I also say gnome like nome. Can't seem to say that hard G. And a gnu (new) is an animal. I think the next Ubuntu should be gnarly gnu

EDIT - oh, and people who write then when they mean than and vice versa really annoy me.

First off - a URL is a Uniform Resource Locator. I pronounce it, U_R_L.

A .gif file is pronounced Gif with a hard 'G'

A .png is precisely that - P_N_G.

avatar

I always call it a-va-tar

but am constantly corrected by Mackenzie that it is pronounced Av-a-tar

she appears to be right:

–noun
1.Hindu Mythology. the descent of a deity to the earth in an incarnate form or some manifest shape; the incarnation of a god.
2.an embodiment or personification, as of a principle, attitude, or view of life.
3.Computers. a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet.

Now that I know the historical use of the word, avatar....that is a pretty cool word, but prefer my pronunciation.

The poll options make no sense, you can only choose one.

I pronounce URL as the three letters too, .gif as in gift and .png as three separate letters (although in my mind I think of them as PiNGs, but I don't say that out loud).

according to the almighty hive mind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF#Pronunciation), it's actually supposed to be pronounced as Jif, even though everyone I know says gif. I've never even heard the jif variant.

As for url: it's an acronym, so it's obvious to just say the 3 letters instead of trying to read it as a word.

Another common question is this one: SQL or SeQueL ?

You - are - el

Gee - eye - eff

Em - eye - dee - eye

Gee - you - eye (not gooey like your jiff)

My general rule is spell acronyms when possible; anything else just sounds unsophisticated to my ears. However, I do say NASA.

Yes, yes and yes. 100% correct.
Never, never, never "jiff". It stands for Graphics Interchange Format, not Giraffe Interchange Format. (Hmmm. What would be the correct way to encode a giraffe?)

hear is one I heard over a local UUG(Ubuntu Users Group) meet up between Luigi(Brunellus (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=9506)) and Mackenzie(macogw (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=137631)) at the Davenport Lounge at American University here in DC.

fsck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck)

Definition: FSCK: "file system consistency check"

Pronounced by Luigi(Brunellus (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=9506))---"F"-suck

Pronounced by Mackenzie(macogw (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=137631))----"F"-"S"-"C"-"K"

I believe we all agreed that night that "F"-suck is the proper pronunciation for fsck:) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck)

Mackenzie was actually fsck-ing at the Davenport Lounge that night....in front of Luigi and myself.

I've heard .avi pronounced as "a vee" (short a as in apple), like gravity.

And I've heard ext3 said as "extent-three" instead of e-x-t-3

I usually spell out most acronyms unless it makes an actual word, like peg in jpeg or mpeg.
