A true story...

While I was out last night my wife was using my computer and managed to spill half a glass of red wine into the keyboard.

When I walked in, she was busily mopping the desk with a paper towel. In the process of trying to clean the keyboard she had apparently held down the enter key and had started 76 instances of "spider solitaire" - a windows game with an icon on the desktop. She rapidly tried to close the windows one at a time and after about ten got an error message -something like "Wine Error - Spider Solitaire Window Not Responding".

She was stunned and turned to me and asked "How did it know it was wine I spilled?"

I used it as another opportunity to explain why Linux is so much smarter than Windows. :)

how DID it know...

The magic tiny elves that live inside the computer, working everyday to make it work. More specifically the elves that work in the display screen or the Gnomes, must have gotten the message from the elves that live in the keyboard. This of course is to be expected, as the keyboard elves are constantly brutalized by pounding keys. Thus they tend to feel victimized and constantly complain about their condition. In this case being dowsed with wine.

Nah it's a Hardware Abstraction Layer and UDev information for the keyboard, it sends DBus message saying that the keyboard has been damaged by X, in this case wine.

I should add that this is the same woman who, overhearing me suggest to my oldest son that he do a course called "Introduction to UNIX", interjected with "Hey, I'd like to meet some of those guys too!" Apparently she thought I was suggesting some sort of meet 'n greet with guys who were missing some essential spherical components of their wedding tackle. Why she thought a twelve week night course would be offered in that is anyone's guess.

And yes, she is blonde.

And why would she want to meet those guys? What's the relation between men who are missing a part of their anatomy to UNIX?

Eunuch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunuch), the plural of which is pronounced more or less the same as UNIX.

- Phi (who happens to be blonde without having the dumb thank you very much)

..for those who didn't get the Unix joke....

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A eunuch is a castrated man; the term usually refers to those castrated in order to perform a specific social function, as was common in many societies of the past. The earliest records for intentional castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian cities of Lagash in the 21st century BC[citation needed]. Over the millennia since, they have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures such as courtiers or equivalent domestics, treble singers, religious specialists, government officials, military commanders, and guardians of women or harem servants. In some societies, the notion of eunuch has been expanded to include men who are impotent with women or are simply celibate.
