This idea just hit me:

I'm one of those linux newbies, I recently installed feisty fawn, got my 6600gt working with beryl, etc... but this got me thinking

A lot of people (like me) are starting to leave microsoft products in favor of linux, and its REALLY frustrating to have compatiblity problems just because the hardware companies wont help when it comes to linux

As ubuntu (and linux in general) popularity grows for the desktop user who needs an intuitive, easy interface, a hardware demand for webcams, scanners, printers and hardware components grow

So if lets say, one company started supporting linux, a ton of people would give preference to their products over other companies, its a virgin market methinks.

So why has no one done it yet? open source is great, and i understand why many software companies look down upon linux, but hardware? everyone needs hardware, be that windows of linux, and open source doesnt hurt them, and with the growing demand i think its time for someone to step up to the task and bask in the growing market of linux users.

There are actually companies that create Linux drivers or open drivers, and Linux users do support them.

Unfortunately, a lot of Linux users (like me, for example) bought their hardware before they even thought about installing Linux. I just happened to be lucky Ubuntu recognized my hardware.

I'm working on something that may one day allow a windows user to check his hardware is compatibility with ubuntu. no promises but wouldn't it be nice if the installer checked first and then burnt your cd for you?

That sounds awesome!

A application for Windows that checks if your hardware is Linux compatible would be awesome :guitar:

It would be nice if there was a single, easily-accessible place for finding known working hardware and an explanation of how well it is supported (in kernel, binary firmware, works with wrapper driver, reverse engineered, etc).

There is a similar tool used by fedora called smolt: http://smolt.fedoraproject.org/

Also there are several similar initiatives:
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw
http://www.vendorwatch.org
http://www.mandriva.com/hardware
http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php
http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compatibility.html

I'm sure I missed a few. Good luck with the project.
