Just thought I'd post this for folks who are currently bemoaning the lack of music sites (I'm not getting a kickback or anything)...

There is a great music download site called www.allofmp3.com. It has a very complete catalog -- seems to be comparable to amazon.com in terms of music availability. And it's very cheap, about $2.50 for a complete album. My understanding is that it's cheaper because it's based in Russia where they have different laws regarding music re-sale.

You can even choose your mp3 quality.

http://www.magnatune.com/ -> lots of formats, including Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, no DRM
http://www.jamendo.com/en/ -> entirely free music downloads, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis.
http://www.emusic.com/ -> MP3 only, but no DRM

IMHO these are the websites where you should buy/download your music if you care about free formats and/or no DRM

You cannot use a credit card at this site - not that I'd use one on a Russian site anyway - the credit card companies have shut that down. The only way to pay now is cash. Better off just putting your money in a pile and lighting it.

the credit card companies have shut that down.
from what i can gather from everything that i've read so far, the only reason why that has happened is because the RIAA have leaned on them to make them do so....its not because they are doing anything illegal AFAIK.

It's all very grey.

AFAIK

AllofMP3 claimed that they paid money to the Russian collection agency and the RIAA could get this.

The RIAA refused to recognise this and refused to negotiate with the agency.

The US government leaned on Russia and they took action agreeing to shut down AllofMP3.

Independently the credit card companies refused to process transactions.

Tough to stand up to this.

A lot of ISP's in Denmark block that site! After it was on the news I couldnt access it from my Sisters place! Damn I hate censor.. good Tor Firefox extention and a free proxy server fixed it.

That's gotta be wrong. Trillion? That has to be a mistake. That kind of a figure is not even comprehensible in terms of product worth. You're talking trillions when you're talking about what governments own, but not personal property such as music (which is the property of those who made it).

Besides, in US law, you get what the damages were (how much money you lost due to infringement). We're in 2007, and I don't think even a billion dollars in sale were made through all of online music, let alone allofmp3.

Nope...that's no mistake. They are suing for damages at the rate of $150,000 per song for 11 million songs downloaded from June-October 2006 (http://www.zeropaid.com/news/8175/RIAA+sues+AllofMP3+for+$1.65+trillion).

You can even get your music in ogg format there.

My credit card works fine there. Maybe it's a US thing. I'm from Canada and never had a problem.

I think the site has had a few million users since it first came into business. It's been around for ages.

I'm trying to figure out how to use a download manager (like gwget) in ubuntu to download tracks from a similar site mp3fiesta.com. Is there a way to configure the software to download all the tracks on the download page without having to click each download link one at a time? When I used windows I used flashget and would just highlight the links and drag them to the download icon and it would download all the tracks.
