realize that RC2 is NOT a new release of Etch itself, it's only a new release of the Debian Etch Installer. It's the same Etch as as always with updated packages.

well etch is new about every day but yes RC2 is technically a release candidate of the installer

either way it is one AWESOME 'beta' that is better than beta quality

What! Not the default install, man you tried to sucker me. :lolflag:

I'm playing with that xfe file manager, i thought it was crap, then i realized the 1 in ubuntu repos(feisty) is old as hell. Once i installed the deb from the site it was good to go, seems fairly good, takes a little while to get use to.

sucka...... ;)

XFE is great lite file manager with some cool features. I keep pcmanfm around also though.

I'm guessing for the root-mode to work you have to have xterm and set a root password. I don't have xterm installed, but i do have a link xterm->rxvt, so anything that calls xterm calls rxvt instead, apparently it's trying to pass -bc which rxvt does not know and as far as the su password, of course there's none set. Anyways that's minors, i use the exec command to do the same thing with> gksu xfe.

Is there anyway to add right click actions?

Not sure, you could email and ask or post in the forum on the sourceforge page - Roland is quick to respond! I know the config file is in your home folder but not sure what all it can do.

Thanks, i'll look around. I still think emelfm is the best though, you can make that file browser do damn near anything.

agreed re emelfm.
I wish it had a better gtk interface, but it's lightweight and robust.
I have it on all my older systems w/ fluxbox.

yea emelfm is awesome but the interface is a bit less than asthetically pleasing to me

There is emelfm2 which uses gtk2. I tried it but that sucker was way to unstable for me, just kept crashing. I also didn't like the configuration side, they took a simple thing and made it complicated. You can try it if you want.

Really, i don't really see a difference in the over all looks. What i like is you can get all 3 views with XFE, i can live with out icons, i'm more of a reader. Pic->

I do like icons, thumbnails and so forth. :) Do not like buttons and menus and clutter.

Which is weird since I NEVER have icons on my desktop and do not understand why anyone would have them. So why do I want them in my filemanager? ? ? Not sure actually. Maybe I want pretty, but basic and functional with some fluff. Never thought about it - thanks for that brain blast!

I've used debian Etch for 3 or 4 months I believe.. edgy was dissapointing to me. But after triying Feisty I return to ubuntu. :)

Comparisons with Ubuntu (Feisty), anyone? I love that Ubuntu has Beryl and the nVidia driver in the the repos, and that installing bcm43xx-fwcutter offers to automatically handle the firmware for you--makes wireless work almost out-of-the-box. Does Etch have these awesome features? How about default apps?

Etch is just Debian & you select which desktop environment you want to use and you select what apps you want to install. The default install is Gnome w/ gnme-desktop-environment (default gnome apps similar to the ubuntu-desktop package).

Most all wifi drivers must be manually installed if they exist in the deb archives or must be built from source. Debian "features" boil down to "what packagaes are available in the archives".

Wifi drivers such as the bcm43xx are not available by default on Etch, this is true... but many Debian users, myself included, use the Debian Multimedia repository which has a whole bunch of stuff that, while non-free, is useful. The things I get out of there are flash and w32codecs, but it has a lot of other stuff too.

As for default apps, I'm glad that Debian doesn't install things for you. I hate bloat with a passion, and so now I just do the netinstall Debian offers, and don't load up a desktop environment, to keep the things I never use to a minimum. I actually prefer the feeling of choosing and installing the software that I want to have, not just getting a lot of software that I don't really want.

Choice and stability are the two big things that I believe Debian has over Ubuntu. Well, that, and being much closer to what RMS would want in a distro, although I know thats not on the minds of most Ubuntu users.

It was announced today that they were going to release Etch on April 1st... in good humor, but they need one additional week for bugs or whatever.

It is coming...
