Welcome to our project ideas and discussion thread.
This thread is dedicated to discussions involving ideas for new or existing team projects.
Have an idea for team?
Think you can improve something that we've done?
Feel that we are doing something the wrong way?
Here is the place to discuss it. :)

I would like very much for us to hold a launch party for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I think that we should create a project called "Plan for Launch Party". The people working on this project would be responsible for arranging the details of the party such as: where it will take place, what time it will take place, what refreshments will be served, who will fund the party, who will be invited. Let me know what you think. Is a project like this worth our time? Is it doable?

I think that we should make a new members form that new members could fill out. This form would have the following fields: Full Name, WikiName, IRC nick, Location, and email address. The form would also have a list of interests to select from such as : art, coding, socializing, lecturing, music, writing. There would then be a place in the form asking the new member how he/she heard about us. ie. website, wiki, podcast, youtube. Before someone would be allowed to submit a membership form they would be required to agree to our terms. which are: that the member must be 13 or over, and that the member must agree with the Ubuntu code of conduct (which would be posted in full in the aggreement section)

I would like to propose a new schedule for meetings. We currently hold IRC meetings every week. The new meetings schedule would be as follows:
April
First week: IRC at Tues 6:00pm
Second week: Phone Conference Tues 6pm also?
Third week: IRC at Tues 6:00pm
Fourth week: Real Life(TM) meeting / Phone Conference

Develop a secret handshake. But first we'd have to decide whether or not the secret handshake should have a wiki page.

We'll have to discuss that our next weekly IRC meeting ;).
Ooh ooh , I've got another...
Kidnap banjobacon and expose him to a room full of microsofties till he comes up with new and exciting project ideas for our team. *evil laugh*

I think Printing T-shirts with our Team Logo would be a good Idea. While we are at it, I think Our Team Logo needs to be redesigned as well.

I like Free T-shirts. But the T-Shirts don't have to be free as in free beer... it's enough if they're free as in free speech.
I propose that every event have a commemorative tshirt. So for example we'll have a skiing event in some of New Yorks fine ski slopes, and a tshirt of "UBUNTU NY-loco team ski trip".
That's how we should innitiate new users, have them design a t-shirt for an event. Don't show them the secret handshake until they do (or don't point them to the wiki page about the handshake, whatever).

Hey, i hope it's not too late to add something to the agenda for the third week. Us upstate folks want to plan our own release party up here in Rochester NY, and while I guess it's best we do that as a sub-committee, I'd like to give a general status report about it if possible.

I think it would be nice if we can make a better schedule for meetings (possibly poll to vote for time and date of meetings). Personally, I like Friday (afternoon and evening), Saturday, and Sunday. The middle of the week is not a good time for me, what do you guys think?

I would like to see us get involved with other user groups in the area. Should we start this up in another thread for discussion?

We can discuss it here for now. Do you know of any specific groups that are in your area?

Although this already is part of our current projects, I think it is very important to spread Ubuntu by providing help (forums, IRC, possibly even real-life) and information about Ubuntu (what it is, differences with Windows, guides to "absolute beginners"). It should be a fairly high priority.

Here are a couple of idea for support.
1. make a channel specifically for help #ubuntu-ny-support
Have people man the channel on a daily basis
2. create email and man email addresses for support support1@newyork-ubuntu.com support2@newyork-ubuntu.com
3. create a phone number that people can call for support (perhaps we should charge for this)
4. create a place for people to post their location and availablity for in person support (perhaps we should charge for this too).

I created a new page for adding projects and tasks https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NewYorkTeam/ProjectGoals . Anyone can add as many projects as they want. Its a wiki page so its very easy to add and edit projects. The project goals page is composed of 3 sections which correspond to the 3 stages of project planning, Brainstorm, Approved, and Assigned.

For the email addresses idea we should maybe make a list of members who would wish to participate. All email sent to and from support@newyork-ubuntu.com could then be forwarded to the participants. We could also keep a forum thread for coordinating internally.
Later, if we get a lot of support requests, we might have to individually man the email addresses, but for now I think we could have one email for all of us.

That sounds like a good idea. Now all we need to do is find out who is interested in offering support. I think that in general it would be a good idea to have all of our members fill out a form that allows them to check off or list their interests and skills.
