What are your *downstream* speeds like?

Up to 20 Mbps, which is useless, since I can only download about 12 GB per month

Those are impressive speeds man... i only get upto 8Mbps on my link but i don't have any data limits.

With cable I'm averaging 128kbps during peak times. In the off times I'm around 600kbps. DSL was rock solid at 768kbps no matter what time it was. Uploads on DSL were slower overall (18kbps), but cable ranges from 48.8bps (note: no K in there) to 42kbps depending on the activity. There are times I can pull out my old v.92 modem and connect with faster upload speeds than what my cable provider brags about. Personally, I'd go with DSL any day of the week but your mileage may vary.

56Mbps, which can almost max out when I connect to the university. Last year had 100Mbit fiber but moved house and I could not care less wheter it is 56 or 100 because I am on wireless so max 2MB for me.

1.5 meg up and 512k down. I find this acceptable, except for the fact we get shaped to 128k if we go over our 14GB cap :( Plus there are 5 internet hungry uni students living here.

Not bad. It's fast enough for me when downloading, but upload speed is a little sluggish, especially when sending emails with large attachments.

Damn, that's expensive! Here you could get 24M/1M for almost the same price.

I'm using a 100M/100M connection provided by the uni. It's plenty fast, but most ports are blocked, so I can't use P2P, and some online games don't work.

You can't get much cheaper than that in Australia. The land is so big, population so few, and wiring and infrastructure cost a lot of money. :(

I'm on an 'up to 24mb' connection. It's reliant on how close to the telephone exchange you are. As I am not that near, I only get 12m but hey, that'll do me for now...until I can get 100M!!!

Comically, you can burn trough the day's traffic allocation in some ~5 mins of torrenting, and if you start using the connection just after the timeperiod starts, you can get some ~30 gigs before the connection is shaped to the slow lane.

I haven't priced the 5mb/s package from Shaw but even the 256kb/s is $30!! (no bundling price). The Primus bundle I'm waiting for is as follows:

- basic home phone
- 1mb/s DSL

For $40. Since I already pay $30 for Telus home phone only, $40 for this bundle seems like a good deal. As mentioned, Telus and Shaw seem to have the market cornered hence the high prices.

I'm pretty content about the download speed, but the higher the better.

I'm not at all happy about the upload speed. Uploading 100mb takes forever.

This is at my dads. At mine it's usually ~1200-1300 down and ~250-384 up. Officially, I'm on a 1.5/384 plan at both houses. What I love about my ISP is their stance on alt. OSes and P2P downloads; they don't approve of blocking P2P or forwarding info to the MPAA, they have great tech support, and many of their own tech guys run Linux or OS X, plus they support Macs, and have nothing against Linux (just find it hard to support, but they'll probably help you out with net related issues anyway, so long as you know what you're doing with your distro). Their ATM connections are reliable and long-lasting. Their name is Cruzio, and they serve Santa Cruz with dial-in, 1.5mbps, 3mbps, and 6mbps DSL, plus ISDN. Edit:my dad's uses ATT, so no Cruzio for him.

100 mbps was the closest to mine... it actually seems to top out at about 60mbps... but I have a 5000mb download limit per 30 days, and besides that I have horrible latency... however, the alternative may have a lower latency, but it's so much slower. I'm a gamer so I'd opt out of this for that (especially because it's cheaper), but my father is the one running the show.
