If you have ever dreamed of talking on IRC chat while simultaneously browsing the forums, you can now do this:

heres how, if you use Firefox; load the Peekko Chat extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1825/

Then simply go to the ubuntuforums.org webpage to join the #ubuntuforums.org IRC chat channel....

This while simply browsing the forums, what I like about this is you don't have to open a separate application to chat on IRC

Anyway join me....

see the screenshot below

(Peekko Chat has been around for a while now, I used to know the original Dev. quite well and used this alot when it first came out)

very important that when using Peekko Chat that you use their servers to connect and chat....

[host] irc.peekko.com
[port]6697
[channel] #ubuntuforums.org

this will connect by default anyway so you only have to select "join" when at the ubuntuforums.org webpage

that is a different channel on a different server, that requires you use a different client...

the beauty of this client is it works within Firefox and it doesn't mess up the page rendering within Firefox:

from a live conversation on irc.peekko.com #ubuntuforums.org

<The_Noble> this actually put me in #ubuntuforums.org automatically
<The_Noble> so it could not be any easier
<RAV_TUX> pretty darn awesome

Here is an in depth Howto on how to use Peekko Chat in Firefox....(which also works in Flock) I haven't tested other browsers as of yet....

this gives any ubuntuforums.org member an easy way to use IRC chat and stay connected in 2 known trusted and established variables:
1. Firefox
2. ubuntuforums.org

give it a try, I have made many new relationships with ubuntuforums.org members that I have not meet at traditional IRC channels or even here...

for ease of use some of us have set ubuntuforums.org as our homepage and set the Peekko Chat to auto connect to #ubuntuforums.org

so when ever we are on this connects use instantly. Simply Awesome.

It is very important to know that this does not in anyway compete or split from the established freenode #ubuntuforums channel, and I encourage all to continue to use this ...

How to Use Peekko in Firefox

Introduction to Peekko

Peekko is one of many chat-based extensions available for Firefox. It gives you the ability to chat with other people that happen to be on the same web page you are on. Peekko is IRC(Internet Relay Chat)-based (http://www.irchelp.org/), but it is suggested you only use it in the manner it is intended for use, speaking to people in the irc.peekko.com channel on the current web page you are viewing. This recommendation is made by the developers of Peekko themselves since the software, although widely used, is still considered to be in beta. If you are not familiar with IRC chat or IRC servers, then this should be no problem for you as you will be using Peekko's default settings.
The first thing you may notice once you have installed Peekko (https://addons.mozilla.org/addon.php?id=1825) is that you have a new toolbar added to your main browser window. This is the Peekko toolbar (see screenshot below) and it allows you to control all of this chat extension's features.

Previous | Next >> (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_2.htm)
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/p/-/-/-/peeko1.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_2.htm)
Introduction to Peekko
The Peekko Toolbar (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_2.htm)
The Peekko Chat Window (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_3.htm)
Peekko Options - Personalize (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_4.htm)
Peekko Options - General (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_5.htm)
Peekko Options - Appearance (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_6.htm)
Peekko Options - Alerts (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_7.htm)
Peekko Options - Advanced (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_8.htm)The Peekko Toolbar

The Peekko Toolbar sits conveniently near the top of your main browser window and allows you to control Peekko's features as well as navigate the Peekko chat room, which displays at the very bottom of your browser window.
At the left hand side of the toolbar you will find the Join button. If connected to the chat server, this button will join the current chat channel. Directly to the right of the button is the status pane, which displays the name of the room/channel of the site you are currently visiting. In the screenshot example below, the user is viewing Google.com in their browser. In the status pane, you will see that there are currently 4 Peekko users chatting on the Google channel as well as 39 Peekko users currently browsing Google.com.
When you direct your browser to another site, such as About.com, this status pane's info will change to reflect that of the new site you are on.
zSB(3,3)
However, this does not change the chat channel that you are in. So, if you decided to join the Google chat channel (by clicking the Join button) prior to navigating to About.com, you will still be in the Google chat although you are browsing a different site. To join the new site's chat channel, simply click Join again. Directly to the right of the status pane you will find more options...
Update: Clicking this button will refresh the information in the status pane.
Hide/Show: Clicking this button will either hide or unhide the Peekko Chat window (displayed at the bottom of your browser window).
Connect/Disconnect: Clicking this button will either connect or disconnect you from the Peekko chat server (irc.peekko.com, Port 6697). While you are disconnected from Peekko's server you cannot join any chat channels and the Join button will be greyed out.
Most Popular: This choice, cirlced below, lists the most popular chat channels at the moment.
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/q/-/-/-/peeko2.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_3.htm)The Peekko Chat Window

The heart and soul of Peekko is the chat window, which appears at the bottom of your browser window. By default, it is rather small in height so it is not very obtrusive when you are viewing a web page. However, if you'd like to make it a little bigger so you can view more lines of chat at once, simple move your cursor over the horizontal rust-colored bar at the top of the chat window. When your cursor changes to the up/down arrow, click and drag the window to your desired height.
If you do not see the chat window, it means that it has been hidden. To display the window, simply click the Show button on your Peekko toolbar.
Within the main section of the window itself (colored black with white text by default), you will find server information (if you recently connected), channel topics, channel name, as well as chat.
zSB(3,3)
The chat room format is set up in the standard IRC style (http://www.irchelp.org/). The colored bar directly below the main chat window displays the following information: <Your chat nickname> on <Name of current chat channel> with <Number of people chatting>.
Directly below this colored bar is the area where you enter your chat messages. Click in the blank space until you see a blinking cursor. Now you may type your message and click enter to send it to the chat room.
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/r/-/-/-/peekomainchatwindow.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_4.htm)

Peekko Options - Personalize

On the far right hand side of the Peekko toolbar is a button labeled Options. Clicking this button will display the Peekko Chat Options dialog box, which allows you to customize several aspects of this extension. The first tab displayed in this box is Personalize.
Within the Personalize tab you can modify your chat nickname. It is highly recommended that you do this. In the event that you do not choose a nickname, Peekko will randomly generate one for you when you connect to the chat server. While connecting, Peekko will state the following in the main chat window: "Generated this horrible nickname for you: <random nickname>". Although this statement is most likely just a result of the Peekko developers having some fun, I can personally attest that the nicknames are pretty awful.
To the right of the nickname, there are entry fields for three alternate nicknames.
zSB(3,3)
These are used, in their respective order of precedence, in the event that someone connected to the Peekko chat server already has your nickname. Just in case, I recommend that you choose three alternates here as well. You will also notice a Real Name and User Name field in this window. Do not use your real name here. Simply re-enter your main nickname in both of these fields since they cannot be left blank.
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/s/-/-/-/peeko3.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_5.htm)

Peekko Options - General

The second tab in the Peekko Chat Options window is General.
The first option in this tab, selected by default, is Auto Connect. When checked, this option automatically connects to the Peekko chat server when a new Firefox browser window is opened. If you would like to manually connect to Peekko when starting up your browser, uncheck this option.
The second option in General, labeled Browse Invisibly, deals with anonymous browsing. If this option is checked, other Peekko users cannot see that you are currently browsing a particular site. Invisible browsing is turned off by default.
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/u/-/-/-/peeko4new.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_6.htm)

Peekko Options - Appearance

The third tab in Peekko Chat Options, Appearance, allows you to easily modify the following aspects of the main chat window:
Text Foreground Color
Text Background Color
Window Foreground Color
Window Background Color
Font Size
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/v/-/-/-/peeko5.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_7.htm)Peekko Options - Alerts

The fourth tab in the Peekko Chat Options is Alerts. This section gives you the opportunity to specify when you would like alert sounds to play based on events in the chat room. The options are as follows.
Audible Alerts: This option, enabled by default, allows you to toggle all alert sounds on or off.
Alert on Messages: This option, also enabled by default, will play a sound the first time a message is received.
Alert on Message to Me: This option, when enabled, will alert when a message is sent to your nickname or when a message has your nickname within it.
Alert Allowance: This option allows you to specify intervals (in minutes) between audible alerts. If you set this number to zero, alerts will always be allowed regardless of their frequency.
http://z.about.com/d/browsers/1/5/y/-/-/-/peeko6new.jpg (http://browsers.about.com/od/50/ss/peekoforfirefox_8.htm)Peekko Options - Advanced

The fifth and final tab in the Peekko Chat Options is Advanced. I strongly suggest you leave these settings alone, unless you are experienced with IRC-based chat clients.
If you do fancy yourself a bit of an IRC veteran, you can modify the server you would like Peekko to connect to as well as the port number. In addition, you can also specify the amount of seconds you would like to attempt your connection prior to timing out.
Please keep in mind that Peekko is still technically a beta client, although it is widely distributed and used. Also, it is not really meant at the moment to be used to access IRC servers other than Peekko's chat server itself. If you wish to ignore these warnings and venture out to other servers with this extension, proceed at your own risk.

Sorry for the late reply I was drinking heavily and eating Shepard's pie, corned beef and cabbage.

That thing in my shot is the receiver for my wireless keyboard and mouse. It doubles as a VoIP speaker phone. It's what I use for Skype. My roommate and I are trying to write a keyboard layout for it to use all of the buttons. Unfortunately, some keys don't get picked up in xev :(

Interestingly enough, that can of Raid was "Outdoor Fresh Scent."

I've been reinstalling OSes for the last couple days.

Also, the Peekko chat thing doesn't seem to be supported anymore by Firefox. I had to download and install it from the site itself.

I'm back on normal Edgy without Beryl :( I wish I could get a deb for 0.1.99.2

I just realized this may not work with my custom theme so I am going to revert to the default theme....
