Ok I recently installed Debian Etch from a very basic install. It came with very few packages and I built the system from there. Right now, KDE takes very long to start up, like 20 minutes. When I run 'startx' from the console, I see that it is having some problem with my Synaptics touchpad/driver, because it turns it off and on for several minutes while KDE's bootup splash just hangs. Then the splash disappears and it sits at the splash background for about 5 minutes, until finally my KDE background comes up and after a long while I can right-click and bring up the menu (meaning I can get a Konsole and start up most programs). It takes another 5 minutes before the taskbar loads and everything is started.
I've tried reinstalling. I've tried purging X11, KDE, and KDM and then redownloading from a different mirror. I've tried KDE with GDM. Nothing has fixed this problem. ***?
