I'm looking for a simple countdown timer that will run full screen, countdown, and makes a sound when it hits zero. Any suggestions?

yea display the numbers full screen while it counts down. There are a bunch of these for windoz, but haven't seen any for Linux.

Hi, I was just looking for the very same thing. And found it! Try http://www.thrysoee.dk/stopwatch/
It's platform independent, runs on Java. Runs in fullscreen, customizable font, colour, etc.

Do any of you know of a timer that does countdown to a date? What I'm looking for is something similar to TimeLeft (******* software http://www.timeleft.info/). Most of the timers I have found you just set a time and it counts down, I want to set a date and time and it displays the time left til then.

I just went to this site and tried to run the java script. A Mozilla warning came up stating that it could not verify the digital signature. I canceled the installation.

Can anyone check the link out above and tell me if it is safe to install?

Thanks!

Right click on the archive and select "Extract Here". Open the folder that appears and double click on stopwatch.jnlp

Hmm. Then right click on it and select "Open with Sun Java 6 Web Start".
This will require Java to be installed so if you haven't done that already, click --> apt://sun-java6-jre

If you are familiar with Visual Basic, you might try creating your own countdown timer in GAMBAS (http://gambas.sourceforge.net/en/main.html). Here, have an apt:// link (apt://gambas2).

I've had a look for an auction end, countdown timer, and I haven't found anything suitable, that runs native in Linux.
gDesklets has issues with Jaunty at present.
timer-applet is close, but v2.0.1-4 (as supplied by Jaunty) is limited in time to ~48 hrs, & you can't nominate an end time/date - just an elapsed time. Maybe this will be the way of the future, but not just yet.

The best one, IMHO, is still TimeLeft. They have a version that runs in Wine.

That would be great - if you allow
1. some text to be added to describe what it's for, and
2. end time input

Hmm.. I was kind of hoping Delever would put his head above the parapet first!

I am back working on it but have lost the final version I created (excuse: it was a long time ago!)

You can get cool flash timers here http://www.online-stopwatch.com/download-stopwatch/. They do run full screen and I find it most convenient to run them with a standalone flash player like Gnash

Hi,
Look at Ktimer in the repository and see if it's what you need.

Old post, but if anyone still looks for that kind of app I like
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/TimerScreenlet?content=99412

count up/down, scalable size, customizable text, neat interface:
http://gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-m1/m99412-1.png

Install "screenlets" from package manager (eg synaptic) and add this timer to your active screenlets.

The simplest thing (these days, I know this post is old) is to go to the Ubuntu Software Center and search for "countdown". I found several and the chess timer works perfectly (and is full screen if you want). Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

It doesnt seem to add a menu option, so I had to go to the command line and run "gameclock" to start it.

I'd guess "sudo apt-get gameclock" will probably install it quicker than the searching and all.

The widget is really great!

Now one question:

On "Actions on timeout" you can select: "run a command".

Here I would like the timer to play a sound file, so that I have a good acoustic notification of the timeout.

Can anyone give me a helping hand?

Thanks!

Ok, whith the help of this forum I manage to solve it.

The link to the other page:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2057322

To briefly explain how to make it play a given sound file:

1)
Make sure "sox" is installed. If not install it, it is in the repos.

2)
Now on "Timer Settings" > "General" > "Actions on Timeout" check the box "Run a command" and you type
play [name_of_soundfile.ogg]

In my case I typed:

play /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/phone-outgoing-busy.oga
