The difference between repository and cd distribution, I'm not clear on. But I expected this to happen when I found out about it. It's sad that things have to go the way of the patent.

Well we can probably start with the 2 mrbass mentioned - acroread and mstcorefonts. He said Adobe has never enforced it but all the same we have xpdf so it's not really "essential" essential is it?

What I suggested before with such a long list of packages is that we all choose one and find out what we can. Does anyone have ideas for searching, either sites with license information or useful search terms? Probably easiest way to start would be google the package name + GPL or GNU

I'll volunteer first, from the top (excluding acroread). Some are going to be easy. I just googled amule + GPL and got http://www.answers.com/topic/amule

So amule is in the clear - as I suspected. Others are going to be much harder to find, but if we work together it'll get done, jiyuu0 has done a lot for us and ubuntu, least we can do is help out here. :)

So who wants Apache next?

I AM SPARTACUS! ;-)

(c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and

the Derivative Works; and

(d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its

within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents

do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed

So if you meet certain conditions it's allowed as I see it.

Here's some info about audacity at:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/license

License
Audacity is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

This license gives you the permission to modify, copy, distribute, and sell Audacity, as long as the code you distribute is available under the GPL. If you have questions, please contact us.

See also: Frequently Asked Questions about the GNU GPL.

So audacity should not be a problem either.

flashplayer-mozilla_7.0.25-0.0_i386.deb
This should be fine I believe as long as the user accepts the license agreement. Mepis distributes it so I believe it's fine as is.

libdvdcss2
I guess playing back DVD depends on which country. I'm in U.S. so it's ok because copy fair use law conflicts with DMCA and a court hasn't ruled one way or the other as far as one takes precendence over the other. You could add a simple "don't download this cd if it violates your country's dvd playback circumvention law" or something to that effect.

liblame
hmmm mp3 encoding. CDEX (a ripper on windows) has you download lame separately maybe because of legality issues. Fraunhaoffer (spelling?) in Germany makes manufactures pay $1 per mp3 device. Not till the masses get screwed will everyone convert to ogg vorbis.

libquicktime1_0.9.3-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
don't see any issues

acroread
mozilla-acroread
maybe we just need to ask for Adobe's permission that's all
http://www.mepis.org/node/6418
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=34078

msttcorefonts_1.2ubuntu1_all.deb
msttcorefonts.tar
Can't find my post but I remember asking for help (maybe I didn't but thought I did) as I read the license for mstcorefonts. Basically these fonts are legal as Microsoft once offered them for download on their website. What is illegal (according the license) is to modify the .exe file. So the script shoots out downloads the .exe from sourceforge and uses cab extract to get the fonts. Someone needs to create a script that can do that locally.

nvidia
I don't believe there is an issue with this at all. Red Hat refused to ship it purely because the driver isn't open source that's all. Ubuntu 5.04 comes with nvidia 7174 driver on the cd. In my add-on zip I don't even pack it as it's found in the /var/cache/apt whatever it is.

w32codecs
is this only good for .wmv files? I know it comes with quicktime and realplayer codecs but those two are already covered. I'm not sure about the legality of this one though.

Mozilla products (Firefox and Thunderbird, etc.) should not be a problem either:
http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/MPL-1.1-annotated.html

3.6. Distribution of Executable Versions.
You may distribute Covered Code in Executable form only if the requirements of Section 3.1-3.5 have been met for that Covered Code, and if You include a notice stating that the Source Code version of the Covered Code is available under the terms of this License, including a description of how and where You have fulfilled the obligations of Section 3.2. The notice must be conspicuously included in any notice in an Executable version, related documentation or collateral in which You describe recipients' rights relating to the Covered Code. The goal of the MPL is to encourage as much innovation as possible. We anticipate that people will take the code licensed under the MPL and combine it with code developed or licensed under other terms. We also anticipate that the combined code will be licensed under a variety of terms, including different payment terms, support terms and use restrictions. mozilla.org does not wish to dictate the terms under which any such executables will be available. The MPL is designed to make sure that the Source Code Modifications are freely available. After that, the creator of a larger work is free to license the executable of the work as he or she sees fit. You may distribute the Executable version of Covered Code or ownership rights under a license of Your choice, which may contain terms different from this License, provided that You are in compliance with the terms of this License and that the license for the Executable version does not attempt to limit or alter the recipient's rights in the Source Code version from the rights set forth in this License. If You distribute the Executable version under a different license You must make it absolutely clear that any terms which differ from this License are offered by You alone, not by the Initial Developer or any Contributor. You hereby agree to indemnify the Initial Developer and every Contributor for any liability incurred by the Initial Developer or such Contributor as a result of any such terms You offer.

Can somebody please explain what happenned? Who made the Add-on CD discontinued and why (although I partly get the latter)? Is it illegal to use previously dowloaded Add-on CDs?
Thanks

It seems that certain software that's used in the add-on cd is not allowed to be distributed freely on cd. The maker of the add-on cd didn't know this at first, but this has come to his attention since today I think. It's not entirely clear which software is not to be distributed freely. So it's necessary to find out which software can be added safely to the add-on cd without license troubles and the risk that the maker of the add-on cd can be charged with criminal activities.

Oh well this is going nicely

I DO TOO I DO TOO! and so do many others, but that's not the point. If this project is to continue with up-to-date apps to benefit all new ubuntu users we must go through the packages one by one to help jiyuu0. If you've used his guide even once, you're in his debt. You owe him one.

I just finished using GnomeBaker and before closing it, I noted the license info in the about tab, LGPL. That's all we need to do. If you use one of the packages you got from the add-on cd, just note down the license or the patent and legal notices regarding redistribution. If we can't find something suitable, we'll have to look for loopholes like mrbass did looking up Acrobat in Mepis.

It won't be tough if we all help out. At least for me, if it weren't for this add-on cd I might well only be using Kanotix today and wouldn't recommended ubuntu to others. It's one of the weaknesses ubuntu has when compared to other distros that come multimedia ready and with apps people take for granted like Adobe Reader.

This project needs your help to continue. jiyuu0 isn't going to put himself at risk (and well he shouldn't) not knowing the status of the packages. Come on people, time to give back.

OK, but how does a complete n00b find out the status of those packages? I mean, I'd be glad to help in any way...

Well, in several ways:

- You can go to the official website of that specific package or program and look up the license information.
- During installation of some piece of software you can look in the license file and try finding something about distributing stuff.
- You can search with google using specific search terms such as "packagename + license + distribution" or something like this.
- You can take a look at how other Linux distributions handles certain pieces of software.
- You can e-mail the maker of a program and just simply ask him/her.
- etc.

There may be some packages which aren't GPL but distributed in other free software licenses (BSD, for example), or even proprietary/non free software which can be redistributed non-comercially.

It's times like this that Richard Stallman makes even more sense to me.

AFAIK, Sun's Java and acroread cannot be legally distributed (it is allowed for each individual user to download it, but not to redistribute it). Mandrake distributed them - but it had a special agreement with both companies. The other suspicious one is realplayer - we need to check the license.

w32codecs are illegal in most Western countries (the codecs themselves are patented). Legality of libdvdcss2 is a matter of debate - in USA, it seems to be against so-called Digital Millenium Copyright act (DMCA), but in all other countries, AFAIK, it is legal.

Legality of mp3 playback (gstreamer-mad) and encoding (gstreamer-lame) is also questionable. However, I haven't ever heard of anyone being sued for distributing these.

On the other hand, since you are not located in the US, I do not expect it to be a serious problem. After all, we all know of a number of repositiories that provide these packages. The worst that can happen is that one of the companies sends you a letter requiring you to stop distribution of the software - but until you really get such a letter, I wouldn't worry too much.
