I live in Pa., work in Jersey (West Mercer County to be exact).

Installed Ubuntu about a week and a half ago. Every day I'm amazed with something else it can do. Still learning the ropes with it, but I will damn sure help get the word out about it.

I've been very interested in helping out in the OSS world cause I think the whole concept is amazing. However, i've been so intimidated by these HUGE groups/linux users who bite, that I haven't done anything. Ok, i know not everyone bites, but the ones who do are the reason that there isn't more collaboration. That being said, i'm trying to find a group that fits me properly. And it seems like i've stumbled into the right place.

I am proposing that you put a "sticky" on this forum, where everyone lists a spot of personal information. I want to know more about you (as the starter of the group), and who my peers are in this community. I was thinking along the lines of Name, (approx.) Age, Occupation, County/Town residence, School/College, a few personal interests. I realize we all have profiles, but who actually fills that out?

It could also help us get a better understanding of what type of group we've got here - do we have a ubuntu PR group? supprort group? Development group? conquering the world group? As well as open up dialogue for different reasons.

I've just joined, and this is my first impression.


Any thoughts?

in all honesty i want to learn linux. all my life i have been a windows user and advocate. i have come to the realization, however, that because it's familiar and because i know it well, it is not necessarily better. i think its aboot time i jumped off the bandwagon and figured it out for myself.

My name is Vik, and I live in East Brunswick, NJ (middlesex county). I am a supply chain analyst working for Cordis Endovascular (warren nj) currently, switching to Lifecell corporation (raritan nj) in mid-April. I graduated from Rutgers Engineering with a BS in Industrial in May 2k6, and am 22 years of age. Done some cool projects involving RFID and lots of vb/vba programming. (hey,shutup)

I too enjoy drinking and video games (inlcuding, but not limited to, smash brothers). Also darts, pool, jumping off of buildings, going into construction sites, laser tag on golfcourses, and some things i'd rather not mention.

Not a big tv fan, but do watch shows - familyguy,futurama,arresteddev,scrubs,office(uk/us),extras. Play drums, guitar, boards, and pretend i can sing. I read digg, /., reddit damn near all day. Thinking about getting involved in ubuntu-studio. word. Been watching idol cause my girlfriend makes me.

Been using linux on and off, but kept having to go back for work/school purposes. Sold on the concept of FOSS/Linux, but not sold on any specific distro/OS. I AM tired of lock-in (drm, rootkits, all that), so i'm looking for options! I'm not a noob, persay, but my knowledge is quite limited - basically only to things i've had problems with. But i'm ready to go on projects/learning.

I'm Joe. I'm 20, I go to school at NJIT in Newark, I work in Freehold, and I live in Cherry Hill.
I'm a 3rd year CS major at NJIT. For work I'm a PHP developer, debugger, and support tech.
My main interests outside of computers are some video gaming (I play neverwinter nights with my roommate, and I have a Wii), and roleplaying (preferably Vampire, which I'm writing a setting for).

I've been using linux on an off since 8th grade. I started with Mandrake (7 or so, I don't remember anymore), moved to Slackware, moved to Gentoo, moved back to Windows after Gentoo :) and then moved to Ubuntu 3 months later. I've been using Ubuntu since the tail end of Warty Warthog.

What's the team for? I wouldn't say it's development -- I plan on it mostly a combination or PR, support, and conquering the world. If you look on the wiki I have ideas about a LAN party, but those are just my ideas and aren't set in stone.

In the late '90s I had a home network of Win98, 2k, MacOS 9 and RedHat all hooked to each other I had fun getting everything up and running but did not know what to do with it. So I bought a boat and forgot a about the PCs.
Last week i was about to trow out an old laptop when i decided to try Xubuntu on it. Installation was painless and the wireless worked right away. Motivated by this I installed Ubuntu on an old Mac, it too is running great.

I'm a total newbie i don't even know how to install a flash player for Firefox!
But, I'm looking forward squeezing some life out of my old equipment and keeping my hard earned cash away from Mr. Gates.

Hey guys.

I'm Bryce. I'm 20 and started way back in the 8th grade with Mandrake 7 way back when. I have always had a linux on my boxen since then. I have installed 9 flavors of linux and win 98 (deca-boot) with lilo for the fun of it without destroying any data just for the fun of it. I've used Ubuntu since the beginning. My favourite mini distro is Puppy Linux. I don't have windows installed on any of my main computers. I know how to add probed hexcodes to the modules files to assign a piece of hardware to a particular driver. I work at a job that lets me play with linux guts and do some scripting and app packaging in windows.
I'm a vim kinda guy for most editing, I've been on a bit of an emacs kick recently because it's required for my compilers class. There is only one good music player on linux and that's Amarok. I don't like KDE, I like Enlightenment and cannot wait till DR17 to be stable. I like GTK well enough and Gnome is a decent DE. I only play a few games. Terminal Velocity, FFVII, and soon FFVIII. I love Heroes, I don't have a TV so i just watch them online or download them.
I love talking about linux and all sorts of geeky stuff. I shoot photography professionally with Laura Eaton Photography as an assistant. I use ImageMagick and some custom scripts to process my jpg's for proofing, I do raw processing in UFRaw and my image editing in GIMP.
That's about it for now I hope to meet up with you guys later. Oh and I got to school at The College of New Jersey.

I have an iPod Shuffle and I do buy stuff from iTunes, a lot more than my wife would like, but I do like it since I can find a lot music there that I can't find in any store.

I do semi-custom fabrication for vehicles in my spare time, which seems to be diminishing.
I like photography, but hate having my picture taken.
Most interesting thing I've done so far: Bottle feeding a 5-hour old monkey.

And finally:
I'm a complete noob at Linux. I've tried Knoppix, then Ubuntu (LiveCD then made my laptop a dual boot). I've been using Ubuntu almost exclusively for about a month. I switched because I was sick of Windows for numerous reasons; I just haven't been able to completely liberate myself . . . yet. The closest I've come to programming is working on a web page with Nvu . . . and screwing around with GWBasic when I was in 8th grade. I do have some experience with networking (hardware/cable end of it) and have hardwired LAN drops in every room in my house, but I usually use the wireless so there aren't any cables for the cats can chew up.

I use Ubuntu 7.04 on a Pentium III (Coppermine) 833 MHz, but I am ordering a Dell e1505n Ubuntu laptop this week. I also have a 333Mhz Notebook that runs Puppy Linux, in addition to a few other old PCs around. .

I started my Linux adventure in 2002 with a Pentium I, 166 MHz box that everyone told me to throw away, but stubbornly decided it had to have a use, I got the book Linux Weekend Crash Course by Naba Barkakati which came with Red Hat 6.2 (I think), and have had a Linux box of some kind ever since. (the P I-166 MHz box I finally recycled in Jan 2007, when the fan went and blew the processor)

I have used many flavors of Linux; MEPIS, PC Linux, Puppy, SLAX, Mandrake/ Mandriva, RedHat/Fedora (among others), even tried Ubuntu 5.05 for a bit, and one of my favorites is Damn Small Linux (DSL) (doesn't every one carry a linux distro in there wallet ?).

7.04, I feel, has found a good balance between FOSS and the great ease of adding proprietary software, with a mild warning. Ubuntu is high end software that doesn't require a high end PC to run on.

Besides work, kids, commuting, and Linux, I am a Christian, and am now helping a friend start a church in Paterson, I am also a member of the Green Party.

I recently discovered the plethora of Linux PodCasts out there, and am enjoying them a lot on I-287 ;);)

I'm Carl from Montclair. I work in Parsippany for an Expense Management Co.

I'm a relative noob at Linux. I have been experimenting with it for the last 2 years or so. I started out with SUSE and have used PC Linux OS, Mepis, Damn Small, Puppy, Mint, Knoppix, Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu.

I too spend the majority of my free time in front of a computer.

I currently use Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn on a Dell Optiplex gx260. I also have it installed on my son's Dell Dimension 8200. I recently migrated my step-son from Win 2000 to Linux Mint on an older Gateway. The PC was taking so long to boot and so long to do simple tasks, like opening Firefox, that he finally let me put Linux on his computer. No more spyware and I don't really have to worry about viruses. And with Mint I didn't have to worry about getting multimedia codecs cause they come preinstalled. The migration was easy and quick. I had Windows off and Mint on with all of his files transfered within an hour.

I do have a winbloze XP machine setup that I have to use everyday since my Sandisk m250 MP3 player won't work with Linux (it needs MTP and I can't get libmtp or mtpdude working). I also have a old HP ze4805us laptop that I had to put winbloze xp back on because I could not get the wireless to consistently work on Ubuntu 6.06 or 7.04. I had Ubuntu on the laptop for about a year but switched back after I put 7.04 on it and could not get the wireless to work. I only use the laptop when I travel or occasionally on the weekend when I go over the inlaws and want to use their wireless network.

For the most part I use my ubuntu machine for everything day to day. However there are some projects that I occasionally do that I need winbloze. For instance:

- The GIMP is not as easy to use as Photoshop Elements for the average person. There is no program as powerful and easy to use as Elements for Linux.

- There is nothing compatible to Nero 6 - Nero for Linux doesn't cut it. I can't create DVD's from .avi's in one step like I can with Nero 6 in winbloze.

- I can't find a program to burn graphics on my Lightscribe disks. I don't use it often but when I do I need a program that works well and it relatively easy to use.

- I could pretty much fully go to Ubuntu 100% (I'm 97% now) if I could get support for my MP3 player in Ubuntu and if I could get my wireless card in my laptop to work so well and with such ease that my wife would feel comfortable using it. When I had Ubuntu 6.06 on my laptop I could get the wireless working but I had to jump thru hoops every time I wanted to use it. My wife was not up for the release/restart/refresh/reload etc...that was required to get my wireless card to work. And as I said before, in 7.04 it wouldn't work at all.

I know I have a couple of gripes with Ubuntu, but don't get me wrong, I LOVE IT!!! It is my primary desktop and is installed on 3 desktops in my house. Really my gripes are with Linux in general, not just Ubuntu.

Anyway I have babbled enough - Nice meeting all of you and I hope to connect with you all in this Ubuntu Community.

I love gaming own pretty much every console that has been released. Currently playing COD4 for Xbox 360, WoW, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, God of War for the PSP.

Can't wait for a Lan Party to happen so we could get some games going on. Also just started playing Urban Terror and Counter Strike.
