Most probably, this question will sound weird to many of you, but I just want to know why you actually use a computer.

People do what they do because of their own reasons. I want to know what your personal reasons are why you use a computer.

There are many things that we can do with computers, but there are also many things that we can do without them.

For some reason, we prefer to do some things with a computer even if we can do them without one.

So, why do you use a computer? Is everything you do with a computer necessary?

Note:
I am not against computers. I love them. I just want to know your personal reasons why you do the things you do with a computer.

Edit: It seems that many do not understand. The objective of this thread is to make you reflect on why you spend all your time in front of that monitor. It's not something you ask to yourself everyday, but you have to understand that the hours you spend on the computer everyday should make you productive.

I'm addicted. I've tried to quit several times... but I just keep coming back for more... I swear, it's worse than cocaine. I can't live without the mild-toned fan wine in the background. Lest we not forget the clackity clack of the keys and the wonderful presents we find by making the mouse go clicky click click... oooo... pr0n. Where was I? Oh yeah...

My name is spr0k3t, and I'm addicted to computers.

Basically it is my living, and I wasn't able to find replacement knobs for my abacus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus)!

:)
Have a great day all!

While most of what we do can be done elsewhere they can be done better on a computer. Centralisation alone is worth their use.

i use them for spell check. To find free information. to watch porn. to take my sleeping time away. they say that when people snort cocaine, the coke flows through their veins. Well with computers, we have nano chips flowing through our veins. Plus it makes it easy to look a pretty things such as gui's and pretty webpages and beautiful who get nude!

Well I was going to say I use it because I enjoy meeting new people and learning new things with the Internet, but then I realized I used the computer a lot even before I had frequent Internet access.

I use it for lots of different things, I use it to be creative and make music or write stories, I use it to have fun by playing games, I use it to do homework, and I use it so I can access the Internet and learn things and be part of communities such as this one. I also use it because, well, it's a computer, and I'm finding myself more and more drawn to the idea of "just tinkering" with computers for the sake of "just tinkering" with them... it's fun!

Oh, and my boyfriend and I are currently in a long-distance relationship: Instant Messangers and Skype are vital. ;)

Because chicks dig guys with big servers.
And to run GNU/Linux. Just think -- if you didn't use a computer, you wouldn't be able to! Now how depressing would _that_ be?

Seriously though, I love to program and I'd say I'm addicted to my computer..

I use computers for work, entertainment, and relaxing (I guess that would be entertainment as well)

Computers fascinate me due to the amount of technology that is within them. To turn electrical currents into data...amazing. For work, hand drafting sucked...CAD drafting--oh..so much better. Music?...I make my own playlists, no commercials, and nothing that I want to get in the way of my music---DJ's, news, junk, etcetera...

I am working on getting my house wired to the rest of my network, and being able to fully control what goes on via my computer. It will be awesome.

Why do I use a computer?
Question answered...

Just for fun I think. Or you can call it an obsession, whatever. It all started in 1979 at the newspaper were I worked, they used the Harris typesetting system, a mainframe with terminals, standalone typesetters for the headings, that stuff immediately triggered a love for typography and nowadays this technology fits in a lot of my interests, I like to read, write, I love photography though I had mixed feelings concerning my darkroom. Music, who doesn't love that? Shall I continue?
And then there was Ubuntu Linux, that gave computing a new dimension for me: it freed me from the Mac myth, at this moment I'm building my new and own Ubuntu PC. My computers use me :)

My computer is my T.V. It is my window to the world, so to speak. It allows me to finish tasks quickly, it's my media center, and it's my news paper. I would be lost without it.

What i use my computer for is, mostly, to pass time either by surfing on the internet (which i find useful since you always learn something new while surfing) or watching movies. Chatting is something i do all the time on the side, too.

Computer Science is my major in college ... so I guess "code" would be an appropriate answer but the long term would be "computers pay the bills"

People use computers for all sorts of reasons. One of my reasons is for my job.

For my wife however one of the best uses of computers is to keep in touch with her friends and what's going on in her native country. She's not English, so being able to read the newspapers from her native country, listen to her native music etc. All these help in keeping her in touch with her country of origin. It's marvellous!
