Irc client as default

Is there a reason why Ubuntu does not install with an irc client as default?

Maybe I am wrong and it does, but I found myself having to install Xchat to access #ubuntu.

I would have thought irc would have precedence over Ekiga Softfone for example.

GAIM supports the IRC protocol and is installed by default.

I always install irssi anyway. ;)

Good question. But of course they only have 650mb of space on one little disk. So its interesting that they chose Ekiga over an IRC client. I immediately remove Ekiga on a fresh install anyways.
