Mwuhahhaha first ....

This is all on a laptop, so I needed it to be good looking and fast at the same time. For some reason KDE runs faster and more efficient than Gnome. Fortunately I prefer KDE.

Themes: Kubuntu Edgy; Konqueror with Crystal window decorations and Vista style buttons.
Wallpaper: I can't remember where I got the background. A lot of people were asking for it here in the forums and someone provided a link.
Icons: Crystal SVG / Crystal Clear Hybrid
Programs:
....................XMMS with Ater rounded edges theme. Ater theme on Gnome-Look (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=43630)
....................Stendhal is a really cool open-source MORPG that is in the works. Stendhal on Sourceforge (http://arianne.sourceforge.net/?arianne_url=games/game_stendhal)
....................SwiftFox browser since the repository one crashed with Flash. You can see GMail Manager in the bottom right portion of the browser.
....................KNetworkManager running in the system tray. *buntu is the only distro that I have found to work flawlessly with my wireless card, and without ndiswrapper.
Important Note: ;) Images resized to 800 x 600. Original screenshots 1400 x 1050 resolution.

GTK2: Candido-Graphite-Slate (http://candido.berlios.de/)
Metacity(heliodor): Candido-Graphite-Slate (http://candido.berlios.de/) (w/ modified L&R window edges)
Icons: Snowish (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=32599)
Wallpaper by: j3concepts (http://j3concepts.deviantart.com/)
Dock: avant-window-navigator (svn from trevino's repository)

Also for my legal wellbeing I'd like to say that the Heroes 'video' there is gimp'd in from an Internet picture (the particular frame qualifies for "fair use").
I freakin' love this show.

Bigger size at commons/wikimedia -LINK- (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/Red_Ubuntu.png)

Only if I learned how to change font colors properly... I could make the upper panel transparent as well...

by the way, check out this post, about getting wikimedia featured pics daily to your desktop automatically: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-women/2007-February/000613.html
interesting...

PS. pls PM me any comments if you'd like, I won't subscribe to the thread (high traffic...) thanks :)

Tried out Foresight the other day, and was smitten by its lovely green look, so I changed the laptop to suit. Does anyone have the actual wallpaper used in Foresight? It hardly seems worth reinstalling it just for that :)

Wallpaper and panel background from gnome-look.
Icons are Vista-Inspirate_1.0
GTK theme is the Foresight one, which I got from their repositories.
Emerald theme is kind_of_green.

OK, this is Debian Etch, but I like the fact that it's running on a computer (1GHz Athlon, 386MB RAM, 16MB shared Savage video) with no removable media (except USB, not BIOS bootable), and boots in 57 seconds (XP boots in 5:39). Debian's install.exe program is genius.

It's a very windowsish setup, but it's my grandma's computer, and Windows is what she's used to.

This is my same Desktop for March:
gtkrc is original
Emerald is original (a variation of my Minimal_Glass theme on the Beryl site)
Icons from Firefox Cylence:Obsidian
Skydome, Cubecap, and Wallpaper are all homemade using the art of Doze Green and the GIMP

This is 2 different gtkrc themes for the gtk2.0-engines-xfce that I have been making for use for anyone. The Emerald is also original and I will upload it today to the Beryl site. It is a mix of my "Minimal_Glass" theme and my other theme "Moonglow". I think I'm going to call it "The HULK".

i don't like transparency because it always shows the desktop, not whatever happens to be behind it (whether it's the desktop or another program). I think it looks cheesy like that.

Well yes, that's false transparency. But with the proper drivers, acceleration, and program (namely Beryl/Compiz these days), you can get true transparency, which actually makes the windows transparent and you can see the windows behind it.

What wasted RAM? I can't tell any difference between running beryl and not running it. Besides, I have a gig, might as well us it for something - although I can't really tell what it's even using. I doubt it's zero but it can't be much. Top doesn't even list beryl in the top 20 or so.

EDIT: found it. Beryl is using 3% and xorg 4%

my sentiments exactly. Some of Beryl is obviously just bloat, but as long as you don't enable every single plugin and put everythin on the highest settings, you may not even notice that Beryl is running. If you disable a bunch of the more aesthetic plugins and choose just the ones you like, then it'll make even less of an impact. As long as you have a supported GPU, there's really not much to it.

crimesaucer
March 2nd, 2007, 05:20 AM
I agree. Beryl doesn't ever show as using much cpu or memory on my conky readings.

My laptop is:
1.6 GHz Intel® Celeron® M Processor 380
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900
512MB 333MHz DDR System Memory (2 Dimm),

But I have noticed that when I reload my old xfwm4 window manager, that it is a bit faster and more responsive then running Beryl.

It could be that I have wobbly windows activated. It is one of the few plugins that I use. But I really enjoy the Wobbly Windows, Emerald, and the Desktop Cube (with skydome, cubecap, and 3d windows), so I would rather run Beryl Window Manager than xfwm4.

Nice job with that laptop....Is the rest of your KDE outfitted with a dark theme as well (window borders, etc)? Any specifics you can give?

Well, it was outfitted with dark theme, but the problem was that it didn't quite fit when changing wallpapers (like random), so now its like simple, white and transparent, fits anything, for example:

http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/9639/screenshottb1.th.jpg (http://img479.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshottb1.jpg)

Details:

Window decoration is from beryl, I think it's something included with emerald-themes. (Black :P)
Theme is plastic with almost default color scheme
Konqueror has custom profile, when I need some complexity (like two-view), Ctrl+M, Profile: File manager
Monitor is slightly modified superkaramba crystal clear if I'm right.
Dock is kiba-dock with half transparent gray background.
Icons are KDE Crystal Diamond
Mouse is also black, I think you'd find it in kde-look with "mac os x cursor"
Almost all applications (Konqueror, Amarok, Kmail, Kontact, Kaffeine, Kopete, Konsole) have some tuning too. Hiding menubar (Ctrl+M) and putting some buttons here and there does wonders.

It's not coincidence that I happen to use both, gnome and KDE.

Murrina-Charcoal for GTK2. You can find it on the 2nd page on GNOME-Look I believe. Icons are some PNG's I found on google, besides the Home icon which came with a Mac Icon Set that I found on GNOME-Look. For the panels I used an image I made. I can send it to you by PM if you want to use it. =]

Here's mine doing one of my favourite computer activities, browsing the web and watching video at the same time (thank you beryl). I hope the image all makes sense in the pic, because it is the first time I was able to put together a nice looking set of themes and I dare say a picture doesn't do it justice. Here's what I used

CatBrass (http://gnomelook.org/content/show.php?content=47746&PHPSESSID=1262262602c46d7c314716aa3d470774) -- Gtk theme
BlankOn (http://gnomelook.org/content/show.php?content=20620&PHPSESSID=1262262602c46d7c314716aa3d470774) -- Icon Set
GnomeLight (http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/2240)-- Wallpaper
Interesting fact: A friend of mine from Nepal said that these candles are used during a festival in October in Nepal. The festival celebrates a few things; like honouring the crow for helping them send messages, the cow for providing milk, and others that I just can't recall.

Other Not Shown (Or can't be)

Ubuntu Rising Splash (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=52247&PHPSESSID=b222769953ac4c3eabfe47b75a3c9a28) (modified the reflection out)
Kinper (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=50607&PHPSESSID=b222769953ac4c3eabfe47b75a3c9a28) -- Login/Logout sounds

And thanks to all those who created these themes, sounds, and images

Neither. All we need is the gtkrc and any accompanying images/icons. (and have gtk-2.0-engines-xfce installed of course ;)) Granted, that won't get us the window borders, but personally, I'm only interested in the gtk theme.

Anyway, I've been posting basically the same variation of a xfce theme that I have modified to my liking.

So as long as you have the engine installed, you don't need the xfwm4 window manager. I that's good to know.

I think there is a cut and paste problem with your gtkrc.

/home/bubba $ switch2
/home/bubba/.themes/xfce-glow_orange/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:228: error: unexpected keyword `style', expected character `='

It is complaining about this part:

widget_class "*Collection" style "rox"

====>e05a09e05a09<==== Is this supposed to be here?
# This is for the window borders (xfwm4 & metacity)
#
====> style "titlebar" = "default" <==== Line 228

fg[SELECTED] = "#52504B"

Edit: Commenting out the strange hex value eliminates the error.

crimesaucer

It's actually complaining about the line with the word "style".

I'm not to sure about why, I think it is because when I put that "e05a09e05a09" part in there it to use my icon pack, it might have done something. I think it also still has that error when the "e05a09e05a09" is removed.

The reason I have "e05a09e05a09" in there is that it changed the style of the buttons to a better button. (they were those yellow looking "close" ones).

The error has to do with rox which is something I don't have.

yabbadabbadont
March 4th, 2007, 08:15 AM
Removing it eliminated the error for me. (I don't use Rox either) It seems to work fine though.

I have the Human_Ultra_Pack and Human_Effect_Pack icons installed and this "e05a09e05a09" will enable the color of the icons you use for the close "X" button, as well as other things.

Otherwise it's the yellow "X" close button.

I'm not even sure what rox is, but the error doesn't mess with the titlebar colors or anything.

***EDIT- Also use Default Firefox with no theme, and Default Thunderbird with no theme for it to look good. You probably already know that but someone else might not.

Well thank you. I did notice you have to change an option in Firefox in order to view some pages properly. I'm using Firefox 1.5, if you use Firefox 2 I doubt the screens moved very much.

You must uncheck the option "Use System Colors".. That should fix the problem of a dark backdrop against black text. I noticed this on psychocats.net, For an example of what I'm talking about, go to that website with "Use System Colors" checked and then unchecked, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm not really into it either, this is my everyday theme:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Screenshot-36-5.png

I have 7 other themes that are similar in the way I have the buttons a little larger and "round out" instead of "sunken". They all use gradients in the tool bar and menu bar, and they all blend into the tabs bar of Firefox. I also made them all not use any dividing lines in the menu/tool/tab bars. And they all make Firefox, Thunderbird, and all apps match with the same theme.

Here is where they are at on Deviant Art: http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/linuxutil/xfce/
and also picture here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2246597#post2246597

I have already posted the one gtkrc, and for the two Black ones, the gtkrc scripts are also linked back on page 4: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2229161#post2229161

Just like the post for that other dark theme, you have to turn Firefox Pref-->--Content-->--Colors-->--Use System colors to "unchecked".

I'd suggest a nice beer or two.

Here is my latest. Nutronium or whatever from a few pages back with OSX3 icons from gnome-look. Wall is here (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details.php?id=1151). Conky is the same from last month but with slightly different colors. I wish I could figure out how to change the colors of the theme. I tried opening the gtkrc file but it's all gibberish to me. I need to learn how to do that. I want all the text in the menus to be blue-ish like conky.

Notice I've got my poor CPU really working hard. I'm running FAH and encoding a DVD in XP via vmware. God I love linux. I suppose that isn't that much. I had the load over 7 yesterday trying to tar a 20+ GB image of my XP partition while running fah. Now that caused a bit of a slowdown :).

crimesaucer

I'm making a "how to gtkrc" from the few things I've learned and I will put it in a thread in Art and Design and then link you to it.

It might be a little incomplete, and it might not be the proper way for some things, but what I do works for me with no errors and no negative effects so I figured I'd post a simple beginner cheat sheet for people that are into theming.

Then all you need to do is pick your colors, and decide how you like your buttons and scrollbars. You could even apply this to other themes like the one you are using now so you can keep everything the way it is, but just with your color preferences.

@ Interestedinthepenguin- Thanks, I plan on making a few variations of that one with other colors instead of green. And I also plan on making an Emerald that isn't glass so that it blends into the gradient fade like the Window Decoration and the menu bar are one. I'll post a picture of what I mean, my only problem was that I made the Emerald theme with the tru glass engine and it doesn't look right when there isn't a white background.

This is what I mean: (this is with a white background)

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r161/crimesaucer/Screenshot-42-4.png

This is with a black background, it just doesn't look right with the see through part, so I'm going to try to learn a different way to make Emerald themes that have the gradient look, but are solid.

yikes!!! thanks, patrick. how am i finding it? i just put it in my .xinitrc and do startx - b'dum-ching!1 but seriously, folks...i like it. i've used it before and always thought the themes were fugly as hell, but then, i got lured in by some of albi's themes and found a bunch more. iceme is certainly a little more oafish than obmenu, but altogether, i think icewm is as fast as openbox and a slight bit lighter. it's a nice change from openbox and e17, every once in a while.

i got my laptop from system76 last may. it's a pangolin with a celeronM and a wsxga screen. i think the box is an asus. i love it, especially the screen.

um, how do you replace javascript, a programming language for use over the web, with CSS with is used to define styles for websites?

Javascript has its place, but it is a good idea to keep it disabled for websites unless you trust it wont do anything stupid (yay for noscript!)

Running beryl-xgl on edgy. The svn version. The bar on the right is gDesklets, and the barely visible bar in the bottom left is part of screenletsd, a widget layer for compiz/beryl. The thumbnail is part of beryl.
The wallpaper is called Fusion by prodigy_boy, found on deviant art. I'm using tango-noir icons from gnomelook, and the sigelOS orange skin for xmms also from gnomelook.
Hmm, I have the eye candy enabled on beryl, but there are about a million screenshots of the same cube rotation, so there's no need for me to post another one. Oh, and I'm using Gaim beta6, which ubuntu doesn't like very much, but I like it, so I'm using it.

Edit: forgot my beryl theme. I'm using a customized version of the orangeglass theme included in emerald-themes. I cut the rounded corners out, cut the borders down and played with the shadows and overexaggerated glassy effect on the title bar, cause all of that sucked.

I'm running conky now, too, but didn't feel like redoing my screenshot to show it.

I'm not sure, but I tried it first on Mandriva One 2007, the distro recommended AIGLX, and it worked eversince, even with other distros..

when using nvidia drivers, you need to use the built in AIGLX of the drivers. If you use --force-aiglx, then you're not maximizing the card's potential.

Perhaps that bug you speak of has been fixed. get the latest drivers (I usually get them from http://albertomilone.com ) and try it out.

if you install and use the "nvidia" driver, it uses that by default.

You added a --force-aiglx option, which I'm assuming bypasses that and tries to use the X.org drivers.

Nothing new here except for tinkering with Compiz vice Beryl (please don't ask as even I don't know why...) and playing with my newly discovered Screenlets (which I'm diggin').

I really like the normal setup for responsiveness and "Normal-Screenlets" for something different. Compiz works OK, just not a prettily as Beryl. I just wish that I could get the Beryl setup working as quickly as "Normal" for the nice theming. Maybe with my next lappy-toppy :)

Still looking for a better panel/dock/toolbar solution.

Thanks, the GTK theme is a very slight modification of the popular Gilouche theme, I uploaded versions for Clearlooks & Rezlooks anyway.

This is my desktop at home (my other was my laptop). I'm running Edgy with a background from deviantart, an xmms skin from gnome-look, and a a customized theme also from gnome-look. This picture has beryl enabled, but most of the time I run without it, as my system doesn't really like beryl :( My emerald and gnome themes are nearly identical anyway. I'm running conky there on the right, modified a bit beyond the default config. The setup is nVidia twinview with the left screen at 1400x900 and the right screen at 1024x768. Not an easy task, let me tell you. I'm rebelling against the drab blues greys and blacks so typical of desktops.

One shot of a "clean" desktop, and another with my "terminal farm" workspace displayed. The Baphomet wallpaper is by Malphator (Deviantart), icons are "Buuf 1.0," .conkyrc is my adjusted version of another's (couldn't find it again, otherwise I'd give credit). GTK2 theme is "Murrina-Charcoal," the first dark theme not to hurt my eyes and/or mess up Firefox (much).

I can no longer live without Beryl, and I've never found a Beryl theme I liked better than "Scaled_Black_Mod."

I usually change wallpapers several times per week, but this one just encompasses the right mix of gloominess, unorthodoxy and the supernatural for me. Enjoy or not.

If you don't want a dynamic window manager like io3, wmii or dwm then you should check out screen. The cvs version allows vertical and horizontal splitting. That way you can run multiple programs in the same terminal.

Im not sure what that has to do with anything since Im simply telling him the name of the font in my screenshot. I never said it was free.

I'm aware of screen and have been told about it before, I just keep putting off learning how to use it properly. I actually don't mind running multiple terminal windows, especially because, since my monitor is wide aspect ratio, I can't use TTYs at the proper res (1680x1050, in my case).

I'll check into these dynamic window managers, however. But there's no way I'm giving up my Beryl! ;)

I made a new one that I liked, so I thought I would share a picture of it.

I used the color of real milk for my my main browser gradient, and then accented it with dark charcoals, and light charcoals, and matched it to my Emerald theme that I have on the Beryl site called Minimal_Glass.

Btw, another nice theme. I'll have to steal one of these again soon.

crimesaucer
March 10th, 2007, 02:10 AM
It ain't stealing if I'm giving it out for free.

Did you check my "How To" for modifing the gtkrc for xubuntu and the gtk2-engines-xfce themes.

here is the link: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=377397

This way you can just use the gtkrc I included and know where to put the colors that you want in the right places, and you can also change the sizes of the buttons and things if you want, or turn them all back to the sunken effect by redoing the gradients like they used to be in Xfce-winter.

I miss my first coffee cup, I only had it for a day.

m.musashi
March 10th, 2007, 03:53 AM
Well, it's stealing in a sense because I havn't figured out how to do it my self. But you are right about sharing and that's why I love it here.

I've glanced over the how to you did but havn't yet had a chance to sit down and try it out. I have spring break in a couple weeks so look for my own original theme later.
