In college they will tell you that Wikipedia is evil, but in the world outside of the ivory tower, wikipedia is starting point of every learning experience. :-)

Before PASCAL, ALGOL was for almost everything, including introductory language for learning programming. But even in dark times of '60 there were other languages: FORTRAN for numerical calculations, COBOL for business processing (including paper report formatting), and soon also LISP for AI and PL/1 for everything IBM did. Mind you, this was way before C... :-) And all languages were spelled in uppercase, because we did not invented lowercase yet - 7 bits was supposed to be enough :-)

So you may want to be more exact: "for what was ALGOL used WHEN".
