Linux Game Publishing has announced that the Linux version of X3 is underway.

The expected release date will be around the middle of the year, and it will be released patched to the latest version, including the latest bonus package on the disc. - From Egosoft.com (http://www.egosoft.com)

Despite the fact that I've been playing X3: Reunion for quite some time under Windows XP, I'm still very excited about this news :) Without a doubt, it is the deepest game I have ever played -- not to mention the most demanding. It combines space flight-sim, with RPG, RTS and economic simulation gameplay. Each style is robustly implemented, but it's the economic simulation that really stands out and breathes life into the universe.

For those who have never heard of the game before, imagine Elder Scrolls in space, and then take it a step further and imagine a universe that you can not only roam freely in, but is also populated by groups, individuals and whole races pursuing their interests through trade, warfare and diplomacy in real-time, and independently of what the player is doing. You won't start off with much more than a barebones fighter and a pair of pants, but if you have the cunning and/or trigger finger, you'll be able to gradually work your way up to the position of a major inter-galactic player.

Maybe you'll assemble a massive fleet and be the one to drive back the Khaak invasion. Or perhaps you'll helm a merchant empire that can bring about the economic downfall of an entire star system with a transaction. Or perhaps you'll exist on the fringes, as a pirate or a bounty hunter. It's all up to you ;)

Anyway, it's lots of fun and should appeal to all you cerebral Linux folks

This is a great announcement. The game is also very similar to EVE Online but it ain't a MMORPG. Can't wait until it comes out for Linux.

I adored both X2 and X (and Xtension).
I like this version but have had problems with running it on my old windows PC.

I was a little disapointed to hear they are beta testing v15 and wont release this until september (still can't wait though).

Well, September has passed and gone. Looks like the release has been postponed to December:

This is the closest I could get to an actual release date. The LPG site still says it will be due August 2007
