A new version of a spin on Linux I want to start working on. I designed about 4 pages (of note book paper) of what I want it to do, is there anyone that would care to join me in creating this? I need coders (really for the most part I'm not that amazing at code).
One of the things I noticed is the ubuntu is becoming a popular source to build off of (Fluxbuntu is a new one coming up) and instead of doing a BSD or what ever build, I choose Ubuntu just because of the community.

So who is in? I am making the website right now.
I can get a preview of the graphics if anyone would like.

I'm currently developing a distribution called Copland (for PowerPCs), and it's running a modified Xubuntu Live CD.

You haven't really given us much information on what your distribution will be like... probably best if you give as much information as possible, so coders know if this is going to be something they'd like to work on.

Have a look at my Copland (http://code.google.com/p/coplandppc/wiki/MainPage) wiki - you might get some ideas about what potential contributors will want to hear.

Judging by the name (is it a play on the word "future"?), I might be interested in using parts of the distribution for my own, and contributing back anything worthwhile.

One little tip: Leave PLENTY of time for testing. I've been testing my distro for a couple of days and I'm still finding very unprofessional mistakes.

Yeah I am currently collaborating with another developing member on what exactly we want.
I have 4 pages of notes on what we have so far.

I will post a few images of what we made in about 30 minutes on photoshop.

Ok so here is the original sketchup that we had (which is horrible btw just ignore it)

I concluded that it didn't look that good and we should start with something a bit more simple for out Alpha build.

This is what we have currently.

Here is one of the #1 things We are going to include. ATI Proprietary drivers! As much as I can't stand them and I know it goes against the whole concept of Linux/GNU and GPL...it just truly is a pain to install the drivers..so it will be included.

Yes no doubt. I use ATi and it's a pain right now.

Honestly I think its wasted effort to reinvent the wheel. If your actually good enough to do this I think your time would be better spent working with another DE. I think Enlightenment could use the help

I am using this both as an excuse to experiment and learn about linux and as a school project.

OK so I have been talking to some people and it looks like we are going to be good on working on Futubuntu Glow(0.XX or for this 0.01).
We hope to have it up for beta testing in just under 2 months (that's including alpha testing).

This has nothing to do with Debian other than Ubuntu was initially derived from Debian? Why move it to Debian Linux or alternatives? Its like moving Kubuntu to this area?

I thought the same thing but I don't want to argue with an admin.

i don't get what you're doing. is this going to be another version of ubuntu hooked up with a particular DE/wm ( ala fluxbuntu, xubuntu, etc.)? if so, which one? or, is this going to be like ubuntuCE? (if the latter, it looks like a version of ubuntu specializing in the color green.) sorry to be so clueless. what's the hook, i guess is what i'm wondering?

Right now I just don't really LOVE the way the ubuntu desktop is set up, I know that is how gnome comes stock but I just can't really get into it.
I like ubuntu
but I know that there are some things that I would like changed to suit me most preferably.

As far as version 1 goes, it IS going to use Fluxbox.
The main thing I didn't like about ubuntu is the HORRIBLE ATi support.
so futubuntu comes with the fglrx drivers preinstalled.
I plan to completely re-master the GUI.

There is still a lot to be considered as I work on it, but I want to get a barebone OS, which is pretty much what I have already done, and start by doing it all the way I see fit.

The hook? Hmm...
not really sure what would make some one go from ubuntu or suse (well who actually likes suse lol) to my distro besides myself.
For glow (0.X) it will be small enough to get onto a 512 thumb drive but still have nice features.

Things I am working on doing right now does NOT include:
Full GUI (I want to get the software and support down first)
Install app (Might use Zero Install, but I haven't had time to test)

Things that I AM working on:
Better wireless program
beryl for the full version
opacity for applications
boot screen

It will come with:
OO.org (word proc only for the basic but everything for the full)
virtual box (for full only)
SwiftFox (for both)
ATI 8.34.8 drivers
KGpg
JaJuk
Beagle OR Dolphin (dolphin is if I decide to go for KDE)
(this is just a small list)

I don't really have much time right now as I might be taking a second job because I am BROKE.

I don't know how much this helped you, but I will try my best to please everyone with the release.

My main dilemma right now is what DE i should use.
Fluxbox is small, light and fast, but kinda low on features (IMO). Gnome is fast but often time ugly. KDE is BIG. I like minimalistic things, BUT on the other hand it has a TON of really nice and good software for it.

I am discussing this with two other people and we are making more and more plans.
I just want to get something basic that we can work with for now.

fluxbuntu has already been done. you could either do another wm, or have an option between flux, ob, icewm and whatever else might get the most interest. you could do an ob that already includes obmenu, pypanel and whatever people seem to generally want for ob, for example, and do the same with the other wms.

yeah I know that fluxbuntu is out but originally when I was looking at everything Fluxbox seemed to be the lightest.
But now that I have had more time to mess around with fluxbox I really don't care for it that much.

I am now thinking about moving away from Ubuntu all together, but maybe not at this stage.

My new choices are going to be from KDE or Gnome

Post Script: Futubuntu comes from Futurus (latin- abnormal) and ubuntu (obviously ubuntu aha)

Be careful - it's illegal to release a Linux kernel which contains proprietry drivers linked in.

The best thing to do is use runtime detection to see what card is being used, and then link in the appropriate driver. Sabayon's source code might help here.

Oh I never knew that. As the drivers ARE free I didn't figure there would have been a problem.
The thing is not everyone will have internet when installing.
Maybe I can email ATi (AMD now) and work something out.

I have heard of Openbox but never got a chance to try it out.
I just got 3 portable hard drive cases/hard drives in yesterday so I will be installing a few different OS.

I don't know much about fluxbox or ICE. But your distro looks good from what I see.

Cheers!
