Something LIKE Ableton Live shouldnt be too far away.. I think we should merge many existing audio apps, and add the "clip view" as a way to perform. Be able to choose Either a linear audio editing mode or live performance clip and track mode. The design for Ardour is Great if we could modify to add loop function and a new way to arrange on the fly.. I love Ubuntu But I still dualboot to Windows just for making music. I can record in Linux, but I cant play in linux. Any ideas here would be great. We dont need cubase/logic style recording DAWs but clip/scene ableton style sequencer. Thanks everyone, Luvin You Guys.

Hi, mzw! and napalmskatterjazz,

Check out this article by Dave Philips, "Loop-based Music Composition With Linux" (http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000304). It's mostly about studio tools, but he mentions Freewheeling (http://freewheeling.sourceforge.net/welcome.shtml) and SooperLooper (http://essej.net/sooperlooper/) as being good live tools. Unfortunately, SooperLooper requires JACK.

He doesn't mention it, but you might also try Aldrin (http://trac.zeitherrschaft.org/aldrin/wiki/AldrinScreenshots), a reimagining of the Windows program Buzz. I haven't used Ableton Live, but I suspect Aldrin can come pretty close if you build a suitable setup. Check out the sequence editor screenshot linked above, for example.

Nota bene: Aldrin doesn't do beatmatching or timestretching. It may do pitchshifting, but I don't know for sure. Buzz did, and it runs well through Wine.

Let us know if you find anything else out there!

You're right! The Aldrin website is down now, and it was incredibly slow anyway. The project is active, though. Packages are now hosted here: http://www.pohunek.free.fr/ (Hardy handles the "gutsy" packages just fine.)

Since the wiki appears to be down, here are some screenshots from my installation:
