Hello,
I am the team leader for an Ubuntu Magazine the Marketing team is working on. We have come to junction and would like to know if any of you have ideas for a name we want this magazine to reflect the ubuntu community and represent all the flavors of Ubuntu. we are in the process of gathering all our information in one place and I will post a link as soon as we have it straightened out. Please let us know you suggestion and why, I am looking for someting inclusive and catchy.

@Stormy Eyes: Then they might as well release the "magazine" in DocBook format or something with very minimal graphics (like the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter?). The fact that it's a Linux magazine doesn't mean that it has to be boring, even if it will not appeal to 95% of the rest of the world (who wouldn't probably be interested in anything computer-related at all). It will depend a lot on the content, format, and design of the magazine, including it's title. Remember that Ubuntu is a distro that is trying to project the image that Linux is not boring. Shouldn't it's magazine follow suit?

whoa this is good, the reason we just don't want to go for ubuntu magazine is because many people are starting to connect ubuntu with gnome desktop as opposed to the fact that it covers all the different distributions, still some of this ideas are good. As long as the name of the official ubuntu website continues to be ubuntu, I think it will be proper that the name of the mag. contains the word ubuntu, irrespective of what some people think.

Seriously though, I am with Stormy Eyes on this one. It seems (according to a few non-Linux friends!) that whatever you pick is going to have something of the 'train spotting anorak' thing about it, so probably best to keep it simple and obvious. Oh, and not too regular, as I imagine after a couple editions, (unless you involve other Linux groups which clearly isn't the point) it would start to get mighty skinny!

It's elegant, feels nice and is already a part of the community. The drawback is that there would be an ambiguity between the forum part and the magazine, but I think it would be clear from the context which one you're referring to.

I don't think we should use a deformed version of Ubuntu, this little word is the most significant aspect of our culture so we should try to move people to ask, "what is ubuntu?" instead of r"what is m*ubuntu[x|cks]\?" because after we explain that this is a magazine for ubuntu, they will feel dumb asking a second time "what is ubuntu then?".

I know 95% of readers will be geeks but we should NOT operate under the asuption that only geek will get in contenct with this magazine, remember, we try to be "For Human Beings".

Why do we even need a Ubuntu magazine?

Ever read Free Software Magazine? It's so Ubuntu-biased anyway it's not even funny.

I have created some chapters for a "magazine" to answer some of the questions beginners tend to have a problem with. So far:

Chapter 1: I am confused
Chapter 2: What is a Live-CD?
Chapter 3: How to install Ubuntu
Chapter 4: Your newly installed Ubuntu
Chapter 5: Installing additional software

every document is saved as .PDFs, but because of the forum limits, each documents is way bigger than maximum file size.

Anyway, the main reason for being here is that I really need some help since this is time consuming. The documents will be released in with an open license.

Is there a place where I can add the files here in the community? So far, I have them on a Norwegian forum, but it would be better to have them here within the community.

EDIT2: The thing is that, Ubuntu has the "Ubuntu Book Excerpt" in the System>Help menu, but it would be great to have a full book/magazine in Ubuntu as well. .PDF with chapters helping new users with most of the common things new users wants to now. Free and professional enough so that even well known magazines may add it as an extra magazine, with profit if they wish.

how about a guide explaining from scratch how to use a computer? could be usefull for expanding into populations that aren't yet exposed to the technology. those would probably be old people, who aren't likely to switch to microsoft and would be a nice experiment in seeing how 100% novices get along with linux. if we can get peoples grandparents to use linux computers that would be all the proof we need that linux is no less easy to use than other OS's. we should also creat a leaflet with examples for usefull things that you can do on a computer to convince them that learning would benefit them.

I might audio-record step-by-step instructions about how to use an ubuntu linux computer. I am not sure yet. we can create a casette/CD so people can listen while and pause while learning without using a computer. I am not sure that I should be the voice because of my accent, but I heard I have a good voice for radio. perhaps the goal of this project is a text product only? if so an audio recording could be used as a draft/brainstorm.

When i was young, i go to my WC with: Your Sinclair, Joystick, etc...
I grew up some years, and go to my WC with: Amiga Format, Atari, etc...
Last year: PC World, PC Format, etc, etc, etc...(All about windows)

Now... Im new to Linux (im pro in Windows) and i know there are some good Linux magazines around there, but... How about an "UBUNTU MAGAZINE"? (a specific one)

OK Andy, but you should be experienced in Linux World. If i start reading something not specific ill be lost. Its difficult to me come to this new world (Ubuntu/Linux), and if things are not specific (i know ill get there) but i should have lots of time.

It can be done with pure DTP work too, so the cost for the office would be minimal.

I agree. Can be in recycled paper (no need for expensive paper). And should be many advertisers around there that would be glad to advertise in a possible "famous" worldwide Ubuntu-Linux magazine.

If not... Well, can allways be sold by low cost to everyone.

For me I would buy an Ubuntu magazine. I'd love to see it on the store shelves in Borders and other places.

I think it would be good because there would be more than howto's in it...at least I would hope. I would hope there would be interviews, program articles, sudoku, hardware articles, and all sorts of things like that. If it really had all of that, I'd love to buy it, OH and throw in a little cartoon series about Ubuntu and this thing would be the tightest linux magazine around.

This magazine really needs to happen. It is all very well saying to folks that they can run off a live CD or do a dual boot but that only goes so far, they still do not know anything about Ubuntu and as such feel so put off by comments about Linux not being a desktop OS that they never even dip their toe. They do not wish to invest in a book or buy confusing magazines. It just gets left as a good idea but let someone else do it first.

What I suggest is just call it Ubuntu Magazine with a catch line to promote it to its target audience. This will make it easy to find via search engines.

The magazine itself should be aimed totally at beginners and intermediates, sorry experienced folk but my guess is your already pretty good at finding information and help. The magazines reason for being would be to promote Ubuntu to beginners. It would be 100% open, so if someone ever wanted to use the articles they could and likewise if they wanted to include issues on cover discs they could. Likewise if someone wanted to stick them all in a book and sell it too.

Two teams of researchers
Proof readers

Writers would need to write articles and reviews. Artists to do artwork and photo manipulation. One team of researchers to study target groups reaction and its success and what is wanted from newbies. One team of researchers to hunt out work which could be used to fill out the magazine. Proof readers to make corrections add notes and suggestions. Distributors to seed the magazine.

Time lines would be almost just in time, new work submitted by 7th, artist work done by 14th, proof read by 21st hit the shelves on 22nd.
Suggestions for next month would close on 5th so writers and researchers can have a full month to work on next issue if needed.

If you want me to take it over I will, even if I have to write the thing myself. If you think it really needs to be in the hands of an expert then shout up. The question is, how do I take it on?

If the revival gets far enough along I'd offer myself as a contributor. In the process of switching our small business over from Redmond to entirely Ubuntu. Caveat: While I agree "free beer" and "free speech" software should be the goal, I am tasked with making business decisions that sometime prohibit me from complying 100%. Anything I'd write would be from that perspective.

I like the idea of a magazine. I have a bit of experience with publications. (In High School, I was layout/design editor for our Newspaper/Magazine.) It's been a little while, but I think a 'magazine' would be a great thing.

What I might do, during the next week, is knock together a sort of pilot version for folks to mess around with and tell me what they think. See if it is a good idea or a bad one.

tickal26, thanks for the info about the fridge and UWN. They do seem to be for folks already using Ubuntu though rather than showing "what and how". It is a shame the original project died but I feel there is still a chance especially if it is distributed in as a PDF.

Linux Format (http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/) is the best Linux mag around in my opinion.

I love this mag, I may have to scrap for the $16, but it is worth every penny.

I have one problem with it, I do not use all of the other distros that they talk about. I use Ubuntu. I use sudo, not root. An Ubuntu mag would be great. I started working on one for on-line use. I did a side-by-side review of Edy vs Dapper and a how-to for dual booting. I have an editor, but the other prople helping me never got their articals done, so I gave up. One persom was doing a how-to clean up photos with GIMP, there was going to be a comic in it. Ah.. what could have been!

So yes, I would buy, and I would help if it was going to be a serious mag.

Nah... I use to buy mags but don't bother anymore. Now I just go the the mags website, look at what the current issue is about, then I pick out things that I want to read about by searching for them on Google.

It's a total waste on money.

I don't really read web mags, so if Canonical came out with an Ubuntu mag, with a CD every month, that would be awesome. I spend $17 every month on Linux Format, so I would have no issue with shelling out cash for an Ubuntu mag. I would want the cover disk to have a bootable version of Ubuntu or an Ubuntu derivative and updates/programs for those with limited internet access.

Dude, it's a Linux mag. 95% of the literate population is likely to find it boring, no matter how snazzy the title. Personally, I find the title very WYSIWYG. It's monthly, and it's about Ubuntu.

We'll throw Cobol Weekly and Understanding BSD4.4 at them -- I'm sure we can get that number down to at least 80%.
