Check my next post after the one that RAV TUX referenced in that thread. If you have access to Windows, run TCP Optimizer to change the size of the "pipe" (fat pipes are good - skinny pipes are bad). Though it might be, I doubt it's your phone line that's holding you back from maximizing your connection speed. It's probably the settings in your box.

I have Verizon DSL, not sure of the problems you speak of?

It seems to be somewhat regional. I know a bunch of areas in PA are affected, but not everyone in those regions is. Me, my dad, my grandparents, and my uncle all live in the same town and are all affected. There's some threads on CNET and some other forums about it. It's something to do with DNS on their end, for sure.

I've come to the conclusion that you either have Verizon DSL that works, or Verizon DSL that doesn't. If it works, it's good. If it doesn't, you might as well switch. My only options are Comcast for more $$$ or a company that can't provide the same speeds. I've been a happy customer for 7 years until a few months ago, and about 20 hours on the phone, a new router / modem, and a tech to my house couldn't solve the problem. But Verizon insists it is a problem on my end, and most likely related to me using Linux.

I'm on a T1 cable LAN from Cox Cable...it's pretty fast. My utorrent on windows (my only reason to dual boot beside my iRiverT30 device) is fast as hell when I use it. I would use utorrent on xubuntu, but I have all of the speed preferences optimized for a TCP/IP optimizer and a TCPIP.sys patch...anyway, if the torrent is fast, I have crazy fast download times, even for multiple large files.

This is a Washington D.C. server:

We have a 20Mb(2500KB/s) connection and a 1Mb connection but there aint a hope in hell any speedtest out there will give me a true indication of my actual download speeds on the 20Mb......on the rare occasions i see the full quota that is......"up to of course".

I generally need to use a multithreaded download manager though and download a few large files from sites i know capable of providing those types of speed to get a true reading(when speeds are good) as most speedtests will be about 30% or more behind whatever results i get by downloading.

At the moment though our 1Mb line is running at 120Kb/s and our so called 20Mb line is running at about twice that
That time of day:(
I need to be a nighthawk or jobless and home all day to ever see this elusive 20Mb.Being a free upgrade though i cant really complain...:)

I couldn't resist posting to this thread.

My avg download speed is roughly 28 megabits per second :-) My base dl speed is 16 megabits per second but bursts relatively high. My best was this summer (http://www.speedtest.net/result/298476385.png) when I topped out at 33.88 megabits per second! So, for those doing the math, that's a little over 4 Megabytes per second. This is home service, not business class.

Incidentally, Comcast is beginning to roll-out these new services (http://gizmodo.com/5067311/comcast-offering-new-22mbps-and-50mbps-speed-tiers-upgrading-existing-service).

In Japan, download speeds have been known to be in the 50 to 70+ megabits per second range. \\:D/

Ok, something's wrong.

That site must be inaccurate.
Speedtest.net says I have 4Mbps, but obviously I don't really get those speeds.Either your skimmed the article or didn't understand what they said. It said, in part, "...wideband will provide the capability of delivering dramatically faster speeds in excess of 160 Mbps in the future..." Just so we're on the same page, they are speaking in megabits not megabytes per second (Mbps, mbps, Mbit/s not MBps, Mbyte/s, MB/s). So, this means once they've upgraded their fiber net, you could see speeds nearing and/or greater than 20 megabytes per second provided you have a cable modem made after mid-2006 (when DOCSIS 3.0 was released). It's important to be careful when using abbreviations when citing network speeds. Wikipedia has descent articles if you're interested.

And it's entirely possible you're getting 4 megabits per second downstream.

This library internet is better than expected. :) Later I will try from home.

What's your internet speed? Let's see who has the fastest internet.

Personally I have a dialup with 1.5-2.2 KB/s download rate and 500 b/s upload rate

I have Interphobia (http://www.rakblog.com/2009/05/dangerous-disease-in-syria-interphobia/) :guitar:

I can get 100mb/s with no problem, but it would cost more. I pay about $40 US per month for my current FTTH service. I'm out in the sticks too. It would be faster if I lived closer to a populated area.

No idea what the fastest available is.

So what technologies are people on if they have more than 24 Mbps?
Dedicated T lines?
FTTP?FTTH?GPON?

Virgin Media do an (up to)50Mb service here in the UK now although we`ve never bothered upgrading from the 20Mb this time.Doubt we ever will either.Theres just no need. The (up to)20Mb`s been more than sufficient for all of us with the 3-4 machines usually connected most evenings/weekends.
No need for any (up to)50Mb and certainly no need for any more (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/05/why-your-cable-internet-connection-gets-slow.ars) than (up to)that.
