We all know xmms is already beyond zenith, maybe already beyond the horizon. It got purged from Gentoo's tree coupla months ago. It's kept in the Universe repository for Ubuntu and hasn't been updated for ages. My question is why i can't install its actively-maintained forks (such as Audacious and Xmms2) instead? Any plans to include these into Ubuntu's repos?

I think it's expected for people to use multimedia players, such as Totem or MPlayer; or Library management Itune-alikes such as Amarok or Banshee.

As an XMMS user, give me simplicity any day! Failing that, a nice mplayer package that includes visualisations and cool interfaces. For a great example see XBMC (which uses mplayer almost exclusively)

You can install Audacious, I have it installed and use it every day. There is a guide on their website that tells you how to install it.

rhythmbox is more a library management tool than a music player

Regards,

of course, but if ubuntu took this approach for everything it wouldn't be ubuntu. apt-get or synaptic are there for a reason.

what's wrong with rhythmbox?

It's big and complicated, and many people want small and simple.

I'm an xmms fan myself, i hate all these resource hogs like Amarok, Rhythmbox and the like. Yes i know i can install Audacious even though it's not included in the repos. But i'd love to know why it simply can't be included, along with XMMS2. That's what i'm asking

Isn't xmms interface more complicated than rhythmbox one? (with its tiny buttons)
But it's true that xmms is much lighter.

I vote for audacious. I like its simplicity and size.

here are the repos for latest audacious:

deb http://static.audacious-media-player.org/ubuntu edgy main
deb-src http://static.audacious-media-player.org/ubuntu edgy main

add them to your sources.list and use apt-get to install it.

Audacious is in Feisty's Universe repo.

Beep Media Player, which is in the repos under beep-media-player. It's essentially XMMS that uses gtk2.

I don't know why Listen (http://listengnome.free.fr/) is not popular here.

I've tried a few players , and this I like most at the moment.

I'm a Ubuntu ( Linux ) newbie for about 2 weeks now, so maybe I've find some other later.

Oh , btw , in Windoos I use Jriver Media Center for all my music needs.
