wine ran Grand theft auto vice city remarkably well.

and 1gb of ram
ubuntu edgy
okay.
the thing is san andreas is on the supported software by wine list, but it doesn't even start
any clues?

Actually it's not on the supported list for wine:

Version - 1.00
Description - Retail CD Release
Rating - Garbage
Wine version - CVS

Garbage means exactly what it sounds like, the program doesn't run or runs so badly it makes you wish it wouldn't run in the first place.

Maybe you're thinking of Cedega?

GTA San Andrea's Works Perfectly With Wine 1.1.1

I am using Xubuntu 8.04 with Gnome Desktop, kept fully up-to-date. (PS, I let it install the pre-realesed (Hardy Proposed) packages also.

Hardware Specs
Nvidia 8600GT
Intel Core 2 Duo 7700
2 GB Ram

Cheers - CC7

I've had San andreas running under Wine on 7.10. I'm not much into games myself, I just did it to see if it would work. I must be one of the lucky ones as I had no problem. I was very impressed as I could load GTASA in seconds using my spacebar to skip past all the splash screens.

The way I got it to work was by simply copying the files from my friends windows instalations, after trying to install it the usual waf and reaching a dead end.

I can't really help any more than this, but perhaps this info is useful.

Good luck.
