If I'm not going to a specific page, usually the first thing I do is search. If I'm confident ("feeling lucky"), I'll search from the address bar. Otherwise, I like to have the homepage there for a regular search or for use of the language tools or other Google search options.

My search bar is usually at the dictionary, the IMDB, or the Ubuntu package search.

In the old days (before Google), it was about:blank (http://about%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:blank). Then, for many years, it was http://google.com or http://google.com/ig. Now, it's http://scott-desktop.local (which I have full control over--it has replaced bookmarks since it works on all machines and browsers).

I use a session saver and many tabs, so I don't see my home page regularly, but when I open a new tab, a home page is handy.

I'm surprised to see that none of the people who posted so far uses the same solutoin I use. I have the Tab Mix Plus extension and I have a spectial start-up session for it so Firefox opens with 3 tabs. Currently they are google.com/ig, gmail and the default about ubuntu page. The first two tabs are locked and frozen, so new links from them open in new tabs and they can't be closed. The third tab is just for anyting else I want to do.

It used to be the weather page for my area. But shortly after getting a stable backed up version of Ubuntu I visited the grc.com site to have my ports scanned. Of course it passed with flying colors.

A link caught my eye, and that led to another link and suddenly it dawned on me – there is a very good chance that Microsoft pays someone to analyze all visitors and report the results which go up the line.

And that's when i had the thought – I wonder what would happen if lots of Linux browsers started visiting the msn site? And I went and set it as my home page – and visit it several times a day.

Yes – I was a mean kid when growing up.

Wow, Tab Mix Plus is great. I'm useing it now.

One thing though, I can make Wikinews and Wikipedia my 2 home pages if I want but when I do that I have to manually set the pages to protect so I don't delete them. Is there a way I can have my 2 homepages automatically protected when I startup the browser?

And I've a question too about my homepage,
I'm using it for a couple of years now and it worked well under windows and suse with different browsers.
Now with Ubuntu the navigation menu of the page doesn't load.
My ad block is turn off and I tried some other browsers (Mozilla and Epiphany) with the same result.
So I mailed the webmaster, he wrote;

My first guess would be that it is an issue w/ flash, but I see that the logic banner below the nav bar is loading ok-- so my second guess is that it could be an ad-blocker. Are you using any sort of ad blocking or filtering? If so, the filename of the menu is "finalmenu_noanim.swf"

Also, do you have another browser on your computer, and if so, does the menu load in that?

We probably should have a text-only nav bar somewhere on the page too, for people who don't have flash...

Brett

Somebody any idea?

I'm afraid I can't remember, it's been a few months since I set up Firefox to open like that. I'm at work now, on Firefox 2 RC3,and sadly Tab Mix Plus is not compatible with it yet, so I can't test it. I guess I just locked/froze/protected (can't remember how it's called :-/) the tabs before I saved the session and that was it. I don't remember having any issues with it.

netvibes is a pretty rss reader, but it's features are pretty crappy. There is no way to save a post (such as flagging). so unless you are able to keep up with the posts daily, you'll miss a lot. Also you can't mark something as unread, unless you mark the entire feed as unread.

i once found a greasemonkey script that made google have like a osx type thing with the links above the search bar....

so i enabled it, and then using another extension i saved the page (can't remember what extension it was)....

and then i got rid of everything but the google logo, the links and the search bar, and put a copy on my machine, and it's my homepage....

i also uploaded it to my googlepage and it can be found here http://delfick755.googlepages.com/google.html

and with firefox, i have two homepages, so when it loads up, it loads the cool version of the google homepage and google reader :D

(then i have it so that the homepage loads in a new tab, and i when i open a new tab it only opens the first homepage (the google one) so i have a perfect setup :D

You were correct in thinking that this has been discussed before.

Here's one for instance: What is your home page set to? (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281113&highlight=homepage)

Anyway, it's a fun subject I suppose, so worth repeating. Mine is www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk)

i once found a greasemonkey script that made google have like a osx type thing with the links above the search bar....
do you mean like these
http://googlex.jayssite.com/
http://www.theplaceforitall.com/googlex/
http://googlex.wyattville.net/
http://www.google.com/ig/directory?url=http://www.networkadvanced.com/google_modules/googleX_v2/googleX_v2.xml

there are loads of them. all you have to do to find one is search for googlex. you need to have javascript enabled. :)

this is the page i use for my home page -

I have never been able to escape the clutches of the almighty Yahoo.com. It is just something I used a million years ago and we grew up together. I try to change all the time to a custom google page, one of those other RSS/weather/blahblah custom pages, or even a different more personal Yahoo page... but www.yahoo.com always comes back and prevails in the end.

I have a custom html page saved to the home folder that I use. It is kind of a cross between a favorite list of links and current news feeds and weather plus input boxes for google and wikipedia searches. When I want to add or change a link, I just edit the html file. It has evolved over the years and I feel lost without it.

I like the customization that page offers, but it loads too slow. My almost empty Google personalized home loads in a snap. I keep all the RSS feeds I want as Live Bookmarks in Firefox's Bookmarks Toolbar, so they're there when I need them too.

I didn't realize that Google automatically redirects people to the localized version of their site. I wonder if they do this by the browser's language, or by IP geolocation.

Since you force the US English version, I'm wondering what the advantage is to using it over the Norwegian version.

FaceorKneecaps

There are more search options on Google.com than google.no. But it's mostly annoying since everything else on the computer is in english :) .

Ahh...

So I guess that means that Google is using IP-based geolocation, in addition to looking at the browser's Accept-Languages header (or whatever it's called).
