View Full Version : Looking for a free, dictionary to download as a database

I have once written a program called the "Florentine PoGen". It's a poetry generator that writes rhyming and non-rhyming poems without any meaning, randomly. I've had some interesting results, but I was running it on very limited databases of words. I've decided to write PoGen 2.0, a more advanced version of PoGen. For this, I need a dictionary* that I can download in the form of a database I can easily access in Java, Python or C. If you know of such a database, or where to look for it, please help!

* if you can find a thesaurus and a rhyming dictionary as well I'll love you forever, but a dictionary is enough.

Here's an example of what the old program could do (not the best one, just a random one, I haven't even read it yet). Nothing impressive:

Raconteur
by Mr. PoGen

"Does he know not of bumpy God or colossal Joan of Arc?
My heart knows not where the rough repast is. To the left of me?
Yes; the hypocrisy is flaky .
Powerfully , I see the overhaul beside my heart."

And that shard that was as gentle as the derivative's fame.
Lady Macbeth could endure gracefully but not frame!
The highbrow is stormy , but is not as slippery as the risk.
See how noisy is the gleaming disk!

The delicious engrossing, the harsh console and the thigh.
My heart approached the arm and beside the subpoena stood the pie.
How can a woman, that silly coddle, gag?
My head is combative and lucky and lo how it flags!

That's excellent! Just what I was looking for. :)

Is there something like this for a dictionary and thesaurus too?

Would the dictionary files of StarDict be of any use? There are several of them, in various languages.

Hi, is there any free dictionary database (sql file) available so that it can be imported to mysql or psql and create new dictionary applications like wordweb and artha.. Great appreciation for any help.

I've looked at both the links
http://rhyme.sourceforge.net/how.html
- i'm not looking for a rhyming dictionary but a complete dictionary database with all words in english
http://www.nzdl.org/ELKB/
- roget_elkb/elkbIndex.dat file is missing
