Hey there community,

I´ve been using Ubuntu for about 4 months now. I have everything I could possibly need running in it and working, from World of Warcraft down to Beryl. I´m a bit of a design geek, so I thought I´d share with you my idea for an Ubuntu ad campaign:

http://img441.imageshack.us/my.php?image=poweredbyubuntuec8.jpg

This is my desktop, spans across 2 19¨ widescreens, I laid out the screenshot like this in order for people to really get a feel of just how cool / efficient linux can be. Most people don´t know half the power of linux - I sure didnt when I started playing with it

It´s fairly simple, but you get the idea.....you can clearly see a music player, windows xp, google earth, firefox, synaptic and a console running in the single screenshot, in a much cooler fashion than Vista does (not to mention much more __sleek__ and __fast__). I think because of the sheer look of shots like this that people will be curious to know what the hell it is considering we can tell them its not Windows OR Mac.

I know there are hundreds of ¨COMPIZ/BERYL DESKTOP¨ videos on youtube, but we need to make some actual video clips of people saying funny things and doing funny things - what I was thinking was in the style of the new apple ¨Im PC / Im Mac¨ ads. **** Not to mention a good explanation of what exactly is going on. Ie\ ¨This is Ubuntu Linux, a free alternative to Mac OSX and Windows Vista.¨ People need an explanation of whats going on, since the general public has a hard idea of even grasping what an OS is.

What do you guys think? If some video of the desktop combined with other peoples submitted cool geeky desktops augmented with some Apple ¨Im mac/pc¨ style clips, I think we could get some viral youtube marketting of them going.

What we´d need for a project like this:

1) Person with a video camera

2) Someone that knows how to do the whitewash backdrop like the mac commercials AND/OR someone that is proficient in video editting.

3) Someone that can write some funny dialogue

4) Some video of/screen caps of power-usered tweaked out Ubuntu desktops to compare in the ad to XP / Mac / Vista.

5) Profit!!!!

I figure if we get a few decent videos produced, we could have a sort of ¨hit series¨ of ads on youtube, and the fire would spread from there....

If anyone wants to work on this or has any ideas give me a shout.

It doesnt have to be exactly along the lines of ¨Im Mac/Im PC/Im Linux¨ we could do something else. It was just the first thing that came to my mind that would be easy/funny. We could do something very serious too....something almost Car-commercialish...

Anyways, throw me some feedback!!!

-Scott

I don't think pushing things that Linux Power-users have done to customize their desktops is a good idea, by doing that you create unrealistic expectations on the actual Linux desktop. When the end-user tries to get those features working as well, they will be sorely dissapointed.

Not really. I´ve heard speculation that Beryl or something like it might be shipped included with next release. The menus are very intuitive and simple, the desktop displayed there...the only real hard customization was the dual monitor display - which hopefully will have its own tool in the coming releases as well.

Its good to start early.

Neither Compiz or Beryl will be stable for a long time. We'll probably have to wait more than a year for real production ready versions. In the mean time I think it's wrong and gives users unrealistic expectations if we market Ubuntu like a product that supports Beryl/Compiz, because actually Ubuntu doesn't support these.

But I'm all for making ubuntu video commercials - they just have to be realistic!

Ok well lets claim ¨futuristic¨ commercials than, because this is what´s possible. The guides are here. We can show both sides of the coin if possible. Its ¨flexibility¨ maybe?

i would suggest a more ubuntu brown-ish desktop in the pic. so you know it's ubuntu. ;)

Ya you would likely have the brown standard desktop shown as well, like we were discussing above.

Has anyone mentioned the marketing team yet?

You might contact Jenda and ask him about it; if I remember right, he's part of the crew.

Perhaps try capturing yourself running Beryl or some such. Get some decent OSS video editing software to make it "Commercial"-like and post it to youtube. It's pretty much free advertising space

I *was* on the marketing team, and I don't agree with the way they handle a lot of things. I think it's better for small dedicated groups to handle individual projects rather than to leave it in the hands of the Ubuntu Marketing team.

Allowing things to just happen is sometimes the best thing a community can do. Who knows what will become popular? If someone puts out a crazy video with all sorts of advanced customization, people will be inspired to try linux, to try to get things to work - theres plenty of documentation on these forums for novice users to get their systems working. I strongly consider the spread of ¨BERYL / COMPIZ INTENSE DESKTOPSZ VIDEO¨on youtube the best form of viral marketting linux has ever seen. Essentially the plan is, we need an Ubuntu branded stream of these videos, that also showcase its simple, and eloquent side as an alternative to windows. What will seperate our video from the ¨BERYL / COMPIZ INTENESE DESKTOPZ VIDEO¨??? We will use actors and scripts, and do some clever / funny things!!

Heres the steps

1) Ubuntu branded youtube commercials that are funny, showcase the flexibility from a novice user as well as a power useres perspective, not just another beryl/compiz video, branded specifically with ubuntu

2) We get some excellent commercials together, and upload the best picks to youtube and get the entire Ubuntu community to rate them up so they become mainstream, front page youtube videos.

3) PROFIT !!!!!

I´d like to talk to the marketting team?
