Hi All

Hi Johan

The SA press has done its job well. He was not the first paying civilian in
space nor the first African in space. He is not even South African.

And now on the matter of the distribution. You are not serious about using
this stuff are you? Thus far just about every project that the Shuttelworth
Foundation has touched has shrivled into nothing. If you want to get
serious about Linux I suggest you stick to the serious stuff like SuSe with
decent backing from a credible operation such as Novell.

Sorry mate, but it would seem that the big boys are touting this one as an
attention seeking gimmick.

Cheers

Andre

Hi Johan

Nowehere did I say the man was a fraud. I make four points. One, he was
not the first paying citizen to fly into space. An American was. Secondly,
he was not the first African to fly into space. I am led to believe that a
Cameroon gentleman was. Thirdly, soon after he concluded the deal for the
sale of Thawte he was snookered by the South African Revenue Services. He
made the mistake of concluding the Thawte sale as a South Africa
transaction. SA Revenue immediately snatched the proceeds and blocked the
funds. It is public record that he was furious and took out British
citizenship. For all intents and purposes he is no longer a South African
citizen. He comes from British extraction and just happened to be born in
South Africa. Lastly, he has recently admitted in a number of interviews
that Thwate has benefited from Open Source software. Read into that what
you wish. The problem is that the SA press and public has contradicted
these points above. It has not helped that the gentleman has not set them
straight.

Johan, please do not get defensive and put words in my mouth. There are
things that just do not add up. That is all.

Cheers

Andre

Hi Johan

Mark Shuttleworth has taken out British citizenship. His parents are of
British extraction and he now spends most of his time in the UK. He just
happens to have been born in SA and spent his formative years in SA. This
is not unusual in the colonies the world over.

I did not say that Mark Shuttleworth is a failure. What I did say is that
the work that his Foundation is involved in is not really yielding anything.
It is a non-profit organization and the projects are not being completed.
This information I get from companies that have gone into partnership with
the Foundation on a number of projects. So all I am saying is that you may
not get joy out of this Ubuntu thing. It seems to many (not just me) to be
a bit of a scramble for attention. This would not be the first one. The
Science roadshow was another. Behind closed doors the targets of that
project are grumbling.

You need to read my comments about Novell a little more carefully. I have
repeatedly stated that the company was in serious trouble. For this I was
flamed and ridiculed. They needed to do something and do it quickly. SuSe
is part of this strategy. As far as Linux distributions go you are not
going to beat the Novell setup easily. They had no track record with Office
Suites and made a complete mess of Perfect Office. They are back in the
space that they have always been strong in.

The big boys would be those that are listed on the stock exchange and who we
do business with from time to time. Everyone does not see this lad in the
same light that the general SA public does. There is more to it all that
meets the eye.

Let us know how you fare with the Ubuntu distribution.

Cheers

Andre

Hi Johan and Sim

Do you guys actually know what it means? One of the most racial concepts I
have ever encountered. It is better of in outer space.

Hi Johan

The Shuttleworth propoganda machine has commenced I see.

More from J Andre Labuschagne!

Hi Chris

My thoughts exactly. But the South Africans do care and care greatly as the
gentleman has been elevated to some sort of icon. That is the reason for
the reaction you have seen.

Hi Sim

I can point you to literature on the concept that will probably shock you
out of your shoes.

Hi Johan

Have you read any books of scholars that really define Ubuntu? It seems
that the propoganda machine has worked very well. I was shocked when I dug
beneath the real meaning of this little concept and it socio and political
aims.

Hi Johan

I suggest you go beyond a website and scratch beneath the surface to
establish exactly how this little concept is intended to play itself out.

Well I don't think that Ubuntu has a totally different meaning that the one from the ubuntulinux.org webpage.

Read here for a "definition":

http://faculty.ccp.cc.pa.us/FACULTY/jhoward/southafrica/ubuntu.html

Also, there is more info here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu

Why are people making such a huge deal out of this, seriously! Why would Archbishop Desmond Tutu lie about something from his own heritage? He wouldn't. It may have come to have racist connotations, I don't know, but there's nothing racist about the word "cracker" either. It's just what people make of it.

they're bashing ubuntu on distrowatch weekly's discussion as well.

Where can I find this? I visit DistroWatch regularly, but haven't seen this before..

Edit: Nevermind, seems I wasn't looking in the right place. Found it.

I know what the guy is talking about now. Check this out:
http://www.ubuntu.tv/_wsn/page2.html

This basically means that someone took a wonderful concept and put it in front of the word "association" and don't really represent the concept at all.

It's like Bush's "Clearer Skies" program that actually caused more pollution. People don't complain when people use the word "clear" so why should they complain about someone using the word "Ubuntu"

Ohh well.

I don't see any distribution shrivel into nothing anytime soon.
It is still Linux, that won't go away fast. :-)

Have them bash. People will actually see this, think it is cool, and join up, or think it is too polished, and keep hugging their Gentoo.

Either that, or they enjoy brand-names and will never leave red-hat or suse. :-)

TravisNewman

Yeah I don't see it becoming a major issue (As long as you don't bring it up on the gentoo forums ;)). The numbers on distrowatch alone prove that

Well, I have to say that I've been using Linux for many, many years and distro wars are so senseless! It's "freedom of choice" and I think it's great that there are so many options available to Linux users! For those that feel the need to slam one distro to make their's appear superior, let them. Use whatever works for you.
