Hi Johan
The SA press has done its job well. He was not the first paying civilian in
space nor the first African in space. He is not even South African.
And now on the matter of the distribution. You are not serious about using
this stuff are you? Thus far just about every project that the Shuttelworth
Foundation has touched has shrivled into nothing. If you want to get
serious about Linux I suggest you stick to the serious stuff like SuSe with
decent backing from a credible operation such as Novell.
Sorry mate, but it would seem that the big boys are touting this one as an
attention seeking gimmick.
Cheers

Hi Johan
Nowehere did I say the man was a fraud. I make four points. One, he was
not the first paying citizen to fly into space. An American was. Secondly,
he was not the first African to fly into space. I am led to believe that a
Cameroon gentleman was. Thirdly, soon after he concluded the deal for the
sale of Thawte he was snookered by the South African Revenue Services. He
made the mistake of concluding the Thawte sale as a South Africa
transaction. SA Revenue immediately snatched the proceeds and blocked the
funds. It is public record that he was furious and took out British
citizenship. For all intents and purposes he is no longer a South African
citizen. He comes from British extraction and just happened to be born in
South Africa. Lastly, he has recently admitted in a number of interviews
that Thwate has benefited from Open Source software. Read into that what
you wish. The problem is that the SA press and public has contradicted
these points above. It has not helped that the gentleman has not set them
straight.
Johan, please do not get defensive and put words in my mouth. There are
things that just do not add up. That is all.
Cheers
Andre
Hi Johan
Mark Shuttleworth has taken out British citizenship. His parents are of
British extraction and he now spends most of his time in the UK. He just
happens to have been born in SA and spent his formative years in SA. This
is not unusual in the colonies the world over.
I did not say that Mark Shuttleworth is a failure. What I did say is that
the work that his Foundation is involved in is not really yielding anything.
It is a non-profit organization and the projects are not being completed.
This information I get from companies that have gone into partnership with
the Foundation on a number of projects. So all I am saying is that you may
not get joy out of this Ubuntu thing. It seems to many (not just me) to be
a bit of a scramble for attention. This would not be the first one. The
Science roadshow was another. Behind closed doors the targets of that
project are grumbling.
You need to read my comments about Novell a little more carefully. I have
repeatedly stated that the company was in serious trouble. For this I was
flamed and ridiculed. They needed to do something and do it quickly. SuSe
is part of this strategy. As far as Linux distributions go you are not
going to beat the Novell setup easily. They had no track record with Office
Suites and made a complete mess of Perfect Office. They are back in the
space that they have always been strong in.
The big boys would be those that are listed on the stock exchange and who we
do business with from time to time. Everyone does not see this lad in the
same light that the general SA public does. There is more to it all that
meets the eye.
Let us know how you fare with the Ubuntu distribution.
Cheers
Andre
Hi Johan and Sim
Do you guys actually know what it means? One of the most racial concepts I
have ever encountered. It is better of in outer space.
Cheers
