What if Ubuntu needed donations from us?

God forbid, if someday Canonical is no longer in a stage to support
the Ubuntu project, how many of you would donate?
I would definitely donate, probably sacrificing a month or two's luxuries too,
coz for me Ubuntu means more than just an OS. Its something that
has given me a lot, that is unexplainable. It has taught me to be sharing,
polite and humble to fellow beings. Its has taught me GNU/Linux , it even
got me a job(which I had to apparently leave for some reason).
Ubuntu Rocks!!

I'd donate and I probably will after I get my taxes back this month. This is by far the best distro out there in my opinion for MY tastes. Others may like something like Arch, Slackware and Gentoo and I'm sure those distros are perfectly suited to their needs but I just happen to like Ubuntu the best of all the distros I've tried. Plus the community is just the best when it comes to support.

No, but I could see them picking up where Ubuntu left off. By the time Shuttleworth's pockets run-dry I'm sure that Linspire will be a profitable company with some considerable force in the linux world.

I donated $50 to Canonical about six months ago; I'd do it again. $50 (or whatever) is still far less than the cost of the next version of Windows.

The more I use ubuntu, the more I'm getting attached to it. I've several cases, where I started arguing with ppl, on the topic of Ubuntu vs. Windows. I'd donate as much as I could when and if need be.

I'm a relatively new Linux convert, and I would have no problem putting my money where my mouth is. If there was a boxed version of Ubuntu for say £30 or £40, then I would buy it, or as you say donate. Defintely, especially after my very positive experiences with Feisty. That said, I do think it should be free to home users. I reckon Windows should be completely free to home users too, but I guess Bill would disagree!

Your support makes all the difference to improving Ubuntu, and helps to keep hungry programmers focussed on making sure Ubuntu is the distribution you love to share. We use donated funds to pay developer contracts for feature goals in the next release, or contribute them to the bounty fund.

Ubuntu won't go away anytime soon if nobody donates.

p.s: Pardon me if my English is bad.This has historically happened before to a Linux distro that was like Ubuntu on the top ten list consistently (according to distrowatch)...this pre-dates Ubuntu, but they lost their "Mark Shuttleworth", I forgot the guys name but for what ever reason he abandoned the project.

The Linux distro to this day is alive and active and kept up by a devoted team of users and developers, not as popular as it once was but still around. Great distro and a wonderful community of users and developers. You can check it out for yourself: YOPER. (http://www.yoper.com/)

I honestly don't see Mark Shuttleworth abandoning his project, so I trust that this will not happen, but if it ever did like YOPER (http://www.yoper.com/) and the YOPER (http://www.yoper.com/) community, Ubuntu would carry on as Ubuntu, with or without Canonical or Mark Shuttleworth. So no worries.

Excellent - propagation and propaganda to prop up a propa operating system.

Not being developer, and having very little talent at anything remotely useful, I have a habit of donating $ everytime I install a new release. I get this light-headed happy feeling when I upgrade and that translates into a moment of "pure ubuntu" when I just love everything and everybody associated with it and I want them to prosper and enjoy rich and fulfilling lives. I donate to get over that feeling and get back to normal.
