If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink.
If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green.
Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time,
all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating

thats because the one moving is green, plus the frequency of the movement is such that aliasing occurs.

Is it now? It appears that way in full motion, but try taking a few screenshots of it.

I didn't save them...But I'll do it again.

Every one I try turns out that way so I'm pretty sure they aren't green. It must be the transition that makes it appear green when in motion.

Looks to me like a demonstration of perceptual filling in + apparent motion. Nicely done though, the filling in (what makes the dots disappear when you fixate ) is usually not that strong in other demonstrations. Screen resolution and viewing distance play a great role in the effect too. The visual angle between the fixation cross and the dots is crucial to the effect. So if you can't get it to "work" try sitting closer to / further from your screen.

The green colour IMHO is the result of blending between the pink colour and the grey that appears when the dot shortly disappears.

Neat trick. I never knew the eye could be so easily tricked.

In a somewhat similar vein, I like this (http://www.johnsadowski.com/big_spanish_castle.php) one.

Have 3 or 4 beers on a Friday night and see how easily your eyes are tricked. :lolflag:

;)

The first one is real though. The green you see is the complementary color for the pink used in the dots, and is caused by the way your eye and brains work together.

If you stare at the cross for a while these colors will then override each other, and you'll see all pink dots disappear leaving only the green spot going around the cross.

I thought the complementer color of purple is yellow, with green goes red and with blue goes orange. Someone said in this thread I think, that the gray and the purple make the green together.

That is rather pink than purple, but to be sure I checked the colors with Agave:

i love all these visual illusions. my favourite must be the one that has the steps that constantly go up, but never actually go anywhere.

here are some more visual illusions, including the ones by that guy who draws visual illusions in town/citry centres:

yeah, its in the repos. i was going to downloaded and install it to show you, but it requires a downgrade of gnome (ie it wanted to remove gnome) to instal it, so i didn't bother. its quite an old package, and is basically a spinning animated globe that acts as wallpaper.
just did some googling - this (http://www.netadmintools.com/nimages/xearthgenback.png) is xearth:

as far as i remember, if it doesn't show up in the menu then just type 'xearth' into the terminal. i think its often used as a screensaver too.
