I'm getting very disorientated looking at the various open source options available to me. Operating Systems, Development Environments and so forth...

So my first thought when choosing one was: "I'll take the one with the largest community base!" But determining which one this is, is a near impossible task when it comes to some of the bigger players.

Looking around I also start to see many similar offers all round, and I get to wondering: "Why don't these people just get together and make a super community?" I guess this would just have to happen naturally over a period of time, but what worries me is that I don't ever hear about these kind of merges. (I'll keep an ear to the ground from now on ;) )

Shouldn't merging open source projects and communities be encouraged?

Merges happen all the time. If it's not a full merge of two projects, what often happens is just various projects "borrowing" code from each other. This goes on all the time in the open source community.
