Herd3 has just asked me to use the hardware database. It directs me to it at Applications/System Tools. This menu does not exist on the install and should be System/Control Center/Hardware Information and click on the button bottom right.

Actually, it is in System menu but you have to enable it using Alacarte (Edit Menus).

That's my point though if you don't know that how do you do it. It would be far wiser to send people to where it does exist, than have to explain how to enable it so they can use it. I'm standing in for the new users who don't automatically know how to do this knida stuff.

I think with Ubuntu being probably the most popular Linux distro these are things they need to get right, it is the little things that put users off not some much the major ones.

I tried to run alacarte both as root (sudo) and user and the menu changes don't stick. The check mark appears, then disappears momentarily.

The hardware database is in System>Control Centre>Hardware>Hardware Information.

That's a bug, so please, report it in Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug).
