It's interesting to see the reactions to this guy. First of all, no matter what you do, or what you think you dress like, 20 years from now you're going to look as stupid as he did 20 years ago. None of us will be as wealthy though. Second, many of us feel as strongly about our chosen OS, whether it's Ubuntu, or another flavor of Linux, or something entirely different. We often say things that are just as dumb, except most of lack the tenacity, the resilience, the focus, and the drive to make sure it ends up in the house of every user who owns a computer.

I wish I were a little bit more like Mr. Ballmer in that way. He may have some faults, but no one in this thread has addressed one yet. The guy is a business warrior. That's more than any of us, a bunch of Ubuntu weenies, can say.

I think you missed something...

I didn't miss it at all. It's like comparing the American Democratic Party with the Republican Party. You might not agree with the Republicans, but you can't dismiss the effectiveness of their methods without a) being insane, b) falling victim to them or c) both.

Of course the dude is opposed to linux. The guys who run a successful business would do virtually anything to protect it and obliterate their competition. I like that. I don't prefer Microsoft, but their method of controlling a market and delivering a product is genius.

I think Apple recently is doing a much better job, and iPod is the proof. Microsoft had been declining these past years, but only critic wise- I think pretty much every IT magazine says Vista isn't a big deal..but in the end, almost everyone is forced to use Vista.

But even the European Union is considering switching entirely to Linux because of the costs of Vista (You can find the article here in the forum)

Saying Ballmer/Gates are genius? Not being a Linux fanboy, i don't think so. Is Ballmer doing a good job since he took over? Well, it's difficult to do a bad one in his position, but i don't see what he has done that really marks the difference...sorry man

I'm not the type to really enjoy a debate. Believe me, the average American doesn't care what the EU is doing. No need to be sorry at all. The richest man in the world is, according to your theory, simultaneously the luckiest man in the world. It's a rational possibility. Unless you've ever had a job. And if you've ever tried to run the simplest of businesses, you would be more inclined to think his 100 hour weeks, constant attention and focus, tenaciousness, ruthlessness, and borderline OCD have something to do with it.

Forget that it's Microsoft. In the sense that he's taken advantage of the computer industry, you're probably right, he's lucky he was born in the right decade. In terms of tenaciousness and desire and ability, they possess more of each than either you or me, and would likely be better than either of us at everything we might like to do. That's all.

I never said that the luck was proportional to money, but ok. I still think he was lucky. IBM was the major force. Microsoft bundled their software with IBM computers. They got spread. But ok, maybe it was a good deal for Microsoft.Props for that.

Again, i didn't say I was better than anyone. I may even think that Bill Gates is a better business man than Steve Jobs (I always thought he was too elitist, and still is). Is Bill Gates a good businessman? No doubt. But i doubt that 100% of what he is and has today, was all made by his hand. It's a common pratice - The employees work, the boss takes the credit.

Again. Is he a good businessman? No doubt. Is he the best? big doubt. Does he "deserve" to be the richest man in the world? I don't think so, but again, skill and luck are a powerful mix.
Do I support his way of making money? No. Do i support the Mob's way of doing money? No. But I also acknowledge that they're smart, and they have some (a lot) of skill at what they do.
That doesn't save them.

And I say it again..i think it's virtually impossible for an average businessman from a good college to screw up Microsoft with the Empire that was built.

When it comes to businesses, I admire a good product, but am willing to go with one not-as-good if the alternatives are 'bad' businesses (y'know, cartels and ones which abuse monopolies and such) because in the long run that works out against me as a consumer. And as is usually the case, most big companies are a product of a combination of luck, hard work and intelligence.

Oh, and I do buy software, just not anything that's priced over 35 USD equivalent and definitely not games.

Truthfully, I don't know what the average American thinks about. I don't like to generalize, and I'm not sure there really is such thing anymore anyway. I don't like debate either. Even if I knew something about the American business experience that others didn't, I don't have any motivation to share it with anyone else. Finally, I don't necessarily like Microsoft. After all, I'm using Ubuntu and playing in the forums. I don't really get into the Microsoft bashing though, because the points of contention are usually far removed from the things that make or break a good company, or elevate Ubuntu. Call Gates an idiot, and Ballmer a monkey - and no one benefits. It's just a bunch of useless chatter, and I'm disappointed I was caught up in it.
