Free FON wireless g routers.
Order one, but dont want to use their firmware (ya ya, it is the right thing to do, share your wireless)
There's been some shell injection hacks that have been overun with FW updates, but the good ol' hardware method appears to be a JTAG port on the PCB which actually has nice pins sticking out so no soldering. Wire it to a serial port and you're done. I actually think I have an old serial to JTAG pin type cable from an old old Pentium Genuine. Might be fun.

i ordered one myself...it's good to have a hackable device and also kind of a wifi range extender...it'll be great once i get my house :P i just wish Fon still sold real Routers (they used to sell the WRT54G for like $20) because i think that would be a bit more useful to people instead of just a wireless bridge

Only US. That is not fair:confused:

Yeah, i kept on seeing '...around the world.' and assumed it will be global.

Registered and all that but then it only allows a US shipping address. If you change the country at the bottom of the page and try to use the same promotion id it says 'invalid'

I recently got mine. Delivered to Sweden. But I think it was a limited time offer. Check back, they might offer more routers in other countries in the future.

I have run into some problems though. The setup won't work so even though I am trying it with a Windows XP laptop there is no wireless connection. So luckily it was free because right now it is pretty useless. It would be very interesting to find out more about modifications though, then I might be able to get it to work. Anyone got a link to share?

Let's say I acquire a JTAG cable...how do I set a terminal to get input from the serial port??

that should do it.

Apparently FON has now fixed all the holes that allowed code injection, so apparently the only way to get it doing something else is to use the serial headers. Looks a little complex but I didn't pay anything for the device anyway so I'm not bothered if I kill it.

Anyone got anything interesting running on their La foneras?

will they offer them for free again? I just missed the promotion as I just saw this thread today.

thanks for that link, I can't seem to get it to work. I click on the checkout button, then I log in, and then it will try and load some page for ever. I can't seem to get through for some reason.

I've already got mine. But I still have to use it through my existing DSL service, don't I? So I'm still not sure whether it's useful for me or not... I'll probably give it to a friend.

Quick question. By hacking/modifying or even not using the device for it's intented purpose are you not violating the agreement you accepted when you requested this 'free' product ?

I agree with you!
How come the Moderators allow hardware "hacking" threads like this?
At the same time, I can't understand this:

You are all being sent a Router for Free to give back something to the community - i.e. Free Internet Browsing!
How come you want to "hack" the hardware guys...
What happened to the "Community" spirit?

Thanks.

P.S.> If this is permitted, I would also like somebody to show me the way to hack my Ubuntu please...

Well to be honest, I just want to hack it as a learning experience. I live in the middle of nowhere and sharing my internet will serve no purpose to the backwoods hunters next door:D

yeah, I kinda feel the same way. All of my neighbors have secured wireless. I figured nobody would really use it.

that is to flash, to get ssh it is different for each firmware

If you don't use it FON asks that you give the device to someone else that would use it for it's intend purpose.
