Oww, looks interesting.

Japan's Turbolinux will begin selling its Wizpy Linux-based multimedia player in February. As a bonus, the device can also be used to boot a PC into the Linux OS, allowing users to access their files in their own working environment on almost any PC.
Now that is a fantastic idea, I want one.

Damn it's pricey for what it does. I got a 6gig Sansa that does everything save for Linux booting and it cost me $200.

I like the idea! a little pricey but I think I'll buy one anyway :)

Ah, Brunellus, how I have missed your cynicism. Once I finished downloading this god forsaken 3.5 GB Sabayon disk, perhaps I will once again join you on IRC :)

Honestly, I became 1337 the instant I installed Linux, no, really. I like this device, but I think it's just going with the whole "Linux will be the future of mobile devices" idea, I like my linux to stay put on my desktop, thanks.

i couldn't possibly care less what operating system my portable media player runs, provided that it loads quickly. that's a concern here, no?

Read more carefully, from the description calling it a 'media center' is actually not a good description. It looks like it's kind of a portable computer to the extent that you plug it in a working one, and there's your Linux desktop, just like you left it on the computer at the library, that sort ofthing.

I understand that it would boot the computer into a Linux environment when plugged in, like a Live Linux. If that's not how it works, it would be very neat to incorporate :D

Nah, gimme an iPhone. The costs are comparable.

Nah... instead, I would go on ebay and look for one of the many sellers from hong kong who're selling mp3s players (and other electronics stuff) for dirt cheap.

I'm not sure its supposed to be an iphone, but their website said they were going to be released in north america at a price comparable to 38,000 yen, which is $300, which is closer to the price of an ipod.

I'm still unclear as to what this thing is actually supposed to be though. I get the media player part, but not the rest.

Adamant1988
June 19th, 2007, 05:24 AM
It's not, but IMO the iPhone will provide superior functionality. I've read up on Wizpy... I think in terms of a media player the iPhone has it beat, in addition to all the other functions in the iPhone.

I think as a stand alone player you could compare it to a iPod, on the iPhone analogy yes it also has a phone, but what does it offer that iPod and iPhone can not offer, a fully functional Linux OS...for college students this would be great, imagine having access to your Linux OS in the size of a iPod.....plus you have all your music in Ogg, and if you need to make a phone call you can.

I think instead of looking at what is similar, look at what does the Wizpy have that iPod and iPhone could never deliver.

I don't know if I would want to compare them on the OS points.. since the iPhone is built on Leopard (IIRC) and uses Safari to allow people to build applications for it... I hear that a lot of the google apps are finding their way to it.

The mere fact that it's linux-based makes it superior. I have never wanted one of these ipod, mp3 player things, but I would want a wizpy.

From what I read, this has no cell-phone capabilities. Now that my understanding of it is better though, it looks like a pretty slick device. KInd of like a turbocharged USB boot stick with built in multimedia.

This brings me to another thought, I know people run ubuntu off of usb sticks. I wonder if anyone has taken an old ipod and repartitioned it to be a portable ubuntu drive. Not sure if you can boot from an Ipod, but it would be kinda cool.

...or you may be able to load Ubuntu on a Wizpy.

I've been waiting for this thing to come out for close to a year now hoping that the price would be a lot cheaper.
I would definitly get one if the price was right.
Also, would be good to have a few more GBs.

Web browser that supports Web 2.0.That makes me stop reading and lost interest immediately... Trying to imply "web 2.0" has standards... what is web 2.0 anyway?

In my eyes its just the same as any other mp3 player.... just has extra software installed by default.

Looks nice but my Samsgung SGH-U600 can already do most of that and some things that it can't do. And it works qute nicely with Linux. I would only carry something like that around with me if it had a proper phone on it. I think the web 2.0 descripion is misleading. It's talking about a newer wap html protocol, not the annoying web 2.0 that we're familiar with on the web. Wap 2.0 is probably a better way to word it.

Web 2.0 is just a general term for a new use of web technologies, like WebOS's and things like that.

Yeah , thats what I'm starting to think. Most new mobile devices are capable of reading cut down websites that use special xhtml and some can also read regular html as well. I'm assuming the use of web 2.0 in this context means that it can understand regular html as well as wml. So in therory you could go on this site. It would look pretty useless on a small screen though. There are many cellphones avialble with similar features that can also be used as phones. This device reminds me of a 3G phone without the real-phone capabilites. VOIP is great but most people would need a proper mobile line that works no matter where they are.

Negative, at least not anywhere in the near future. I might consider it somewhere down the road once they fix some flaws on the Wizpy itself and in the registration process/ClubWizpy website. I also am skeptical about having to send it off for battery replacement. You can read a review here (http://www.linuxlookup.com/review/turbolinux_wizpy_review).

wizpy ships with various alternatives to boot into the OS including cd-usb and usb.

I am a re-seller and personally using one. Love it minus the storage space.

devarshi, how easy is it to use! The reviewer in the magazine thought it was a bit clumsy to use.

In an ipoder's hands its clumsy. Otherwise great to use. the thumb falls right on the buttons. And the UI is easy to scroll through.
