Help translate UbuntuGuide?

I'm about to add the external translation links in… Then I noticed...

Currently, there are quite a number of volunteers who have translated the UbuntuGuide. All located at different sites.

This is good, but:
-sometimes it's hard to remember the external sites name
-some of the guides are outdated (un-maintained) and incorrect (due to
earlier version)

I was thinking whether would it be better to have something like this

It's easier to manange and remember. Different people can also get involved in updating the translations. A ftp login account for the specific language will be provided and be assigned for the maintainers.

I've changed the version number from 1.70 to 2.00 and will start having a proper change log. All the translations should take the 2.00 onwards as its much stable compared to the earlier 1.x

Translators should also follow the layout and format of the guide (to look standardize) under ubuntuguide.org. Do not modify the CSS files (as it will later be linked to a global css file in ubuntuguide.org)

In order to support and the improvement of this documentation. Paypal and Google Adsense will only be linked to the author.

You can download the entire UbuntuGuide 2.00 here:

You can also add additional topics to your own translated page (e.g. localization tips, etc)

If you are interested to translate... do add yourself to this thread... so that the ubuntuguide translation team would be in the circle (prevent duplicate effort).

Hi, I started translating Japanese version for while and have translated about 2/3.
I think it's better to have different sub-domain for different language versions. I also have my web site, so I can host there too with sub-domain of its own. I like to know how many people read it, so I prefer to host on my server though.

By the way, It might be good idea to use OmegaT with OO.o to translate it.

Can anyone think of a way to allow greater participation in the translation process? One tool that we do have is Rosetta for translation (http://launchpad.ubuntu.com/Rosetta): in order to set this up we would need a .pot file of the ubuntuguide. This could then be worked on by many people via Rosetta's online interface. It might be a bit tricky. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It would be cool to get a regular translation process sorted out for future releases of this guide.

If you want you can subscribe to that list too, most of the translation initiatives are published to that list. I've had a word with jiyuu0 about this, and poked around on the net. I think that it would be fairly easy to make a .pot file from the html. If so, translation might be able to go on in Rosetta. Couple of things:

1. It _might_ be undesirable to have translation going on in Rosetta immediately, given that many people have already done lots of work on the translations. It is of paramount importance that none of this work is lost. It should be possible to upload people's translations to Rosetta as well, if .po files can be made from them, but this may involve too much work. If so, maybe Rosetta can be used for the Breezy release of the guide.

2. Do any of the translators currently working on the guide already use .pot and .po files to do so? I am interested to know whether the conversion process will retain all of the formatting.

After a suggestion on the italian mailing list, I proposed to jiyuu0 that tarballs made available in the same way as for the english version of the guide. Perhaps the maintainers of each language would take care of this? It would probably involve the following steps:

1. In the localised index.html, amend the section #downloadguide to read:

wget -c http://xx.ubuntuguide.org/ubuntu5.04.tar.gz
(where xx is the local country code)

2. download the existing tarball from http://ubuntuguide.org/ubuntu5.04.tar.gz

3.replace the index.html in the tarball with the localised one.

4. upload the new tarball to the localised webspace.

One question, why is there a PT_BR ( brazilian portuguese) version? there is no need 4 that, portuguese and brazilian portuguese are just the same with some variations

it can be understood vice-versa by every one that speeks portugueses.

I'm planning to switch hosting very soon

Hi, I started translating Greek version of Ubuntu guide and I have translated about 1/3. Two friends help me to translate the other 1/3! We have already make a big part of the Hoary-guide in Greek. The translation of Ubuntu guide for architecture i386 will be ready in about 20 days. After that the translation team will be occupied with the other 2 guides (AMD64 and PowerPC). The team is: Alexander Feidas (shape) , PeTpeT, Jah. PM for further details me if this is necessary. :)

Yeah the dutch translation hasn't taken off, that makes me sad to.
I've PM-ed the maintainer, but so far i have had no luck in getting a response on my proposal to give him a helping hand. If we could make a dutch team i think it would be great. \\:D/

If we could make a dutch team i think it would be great. \\:D/The maintainer seems to be taking a holiday as there has been no reaction from him regarding the Estonian and Latvian translations which have been completed in the meantime. However don't worry, you can complete the Dutch translation by setting up an ad hoc team, and letting the rest of the world (including Chua) know via this forum.
