So, in an attempt to add to our forums....
Who here is an Ubuntu gamer?
I've been gaming on Windows for years, and I'm attempting to get more into gaming in Ubuntu. I've got Wine and World of Warcraft on my laptop, and it plays decently (not nearly as well as in Windows, but I blame that on ATi).
I'm looking into getting more first person shooters loaded into Ubuntu as well (UT2k7, Counterstrike, Doom3, etc.)
Perhaps we could start having an Ubuntu gaming night as a LoCo team event?

I rule in Frozen Bubble but other than that I am not a very big gamer. I have heard (and played with a little) of this game though http://www.cubeengine.com/index.php4. I think that a game night would be pretty cool too.

Cube looks a lot like Quake 3 arena. I'll download it and give it a shot on my laptop (looks like the screenshots are getting very nice FPS, e.g. upwards of 70FPS).

I play Gnometris, Ktron, Supertux and tuxkart occasionally, that's about it, I do most of my gaming on the consoles.

I forgot that I play Planet Penguin Racer with my kids. They love to see Tux sliding down the slopes on his stomach. :D

I am anticipating the beta release of the Quake 4 Weapons Factory mod. I played this mod on Quake 2, and it was the best online game I had every played. Many of the old players who moved on to newer games with better graphics miss the gameplay dearly. You may see why in the description below.
So my advice, if you like FPS (First Person Shooter) games, Weapons Factory for Quake 4 is calling you. The beta release should be out VERY soon.
http://www.wfrevolution.com/
from: http://www.wfrevolution.com/?page=wfr_introduction
Weapons Factory: Revolution -- Introduction
Weapons Factory: Revolution is a team-based, class-based, flag-based game featuring fast gameplay and a lot of different playing styles. There are seven different classes and over 100 unique weapons, grenades, player abilities, and deployable items that can be used to attack, defend, and harass your enemies. Feel like sneaking around? The assassin can cloak himself and sneak in to the enemy base. Feel like doing some damage? The cyborg can activate his kamikaze self-destruct mode and suicide on the enemy flagroom going out in a blaze of plasma and glory. Feel like laying down some lead? Our gunner has the most fearsome weapon in the game -- a chaingun that puts out thousands of rounds per minute when fired from a stationary position. All this and more can be found in every game of Weapons Factory: Revolution.
Our first beta versions will focus on zoid-style capture the flag (flags once dropped do not return to their flagstand when touched by a defending player. They have to be defended where they lie for 30 seconds without being touched by an attacking player.) As we move towards our first full release we will add other gametypes like King of the Hill, One Flag CTF, and other flag variants.
Despite different ways of playing Weapons Factory: Revolution, each game's heart will remain the same - Fast, class-based teamplay focused on specific goals. Please see our FAQ and Player Handbook for more information on each of the seven classes and their strengths and weaknesses.

I'm addicted to Nexuiz it's a fast paced Halo(ish) fps. On the sim side, DangerDeep is going to be one heck of a game once it's finished!

Back when I was in college, we would have long nights of CounterStrike in the computer lab. It would be a lot of fun to get the group together (those who are interested, and outsiders as well) to play some sort of FPS, basing the entire event around Ubuntu (only Ubuntu games).

Hey Colonel, I've used TS several times myself, but alas, on a winblows box. Without even looking at it, if TS doesn't support a linux version, you may be able to get it to work using wine, which is a windows environment emulator.
Let us know what your progress is!

I'm not as big into games as I was in high school and I haven't bothered much with Wine yet. Even so there are some pretty awesome Linux native games. I play Neverwinter Nights, America's Army (though Linux support was dropped after 2.5), and I just recently found a Free MMORPG called PlaneShift. If I can get more then that running on my desktop I'd be all for a LoCo game night.

As a guy in his "second childhood", I enjoy gaming a bunch. I just last night finished Doom 3 in XP Pro.
After completing Doom, I found "OpenArena" here on the forum. OA uses the Quake 3 engine. I have only played it for a short time, but it seems to be fun. I'll play it more tonight.
Here is a link to get OA:

I hope to find more games like this for Ubuntu.

I've read about this OpenArena game. I didn't know it was based off the Quake 3 engine though! I'll have to check this out, but I doubt it will be anything near as great as the upcoming Weapons Factory MOD for Quake 4! www.wfrevolution.com.

Reminds me a lot of Natural Selection (a 3rd party Half-life mod in steam).
List of games I have up and running thus far on my desktop:
America's Army (whatever the last linux native version was)
Battle for Wesnoth
Cube 2
Flightgear
Jedi Knight II (via wine)
Open Arena
Planeshift
Neverwinter Nights
Nexuiz
Steam (original Half-life and most of its mods through wine)
Tremulous

I found another FPS worth looking into called Warsow. It has a unique graphical style thanks to it being cel shaded. It also has some unique controls for special player movements and some different weapons then the other games I've tried so far. You can check it out here: http://www.warsow.net/

I'm loving Frets on Fire, and I've tried Guild Wars on both my ATi laptop and my ATi desktop, and they have both failed miserably with the "Too many concurrent lights" error, but my nVidia desktop has only had that problem once, I believe, so it's much more playable.

I have been having this error for Guild Wars more and more frequently. I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700. Also I have installed Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory now as well.

Updated list of games I have up and running:
America's Army 2.5
Armagetron
Battle for Wesnoth
Chromium
Cube 2
Flightgear
Frets on Fire
Frozen Bubble
Grid Wars 2
Guild Wars (via Wine. Crashes randomly due to too many concurrently active lights.)
Halo (via Wine. Laggy and improperly displays in the top two-thirds of the screen.)
Jedi Knight II (via Wine.)
KAsteroids
KBattleship
KMines
KNetWalk
KSudoku
Open Arena
Planeshift
Planet Penguin Racer
Neverwinter Nights
Nexuiz
Savage
Second Life
Spring
Steam (original Half-life and several mods through Wine)
Super Tux
Super Tux Kart
Tremulous
Warsow (The mouse has stopped working since I updated to the newest version)
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Of the newest round of installs I like Chromium and KNetWalk the best. They are a step away from my standard FPS games though. These are more old school (Chromium) and puzzly (KNetWalk).

I have heard mixed reviews from wine hq on the ability to run it through wine. I have had partial success as it actually installed, but the in-game graphics only display on the top 2/3's of my screen and it is very laggy.

Actually, Starcraft plays perfectly with Cedega. With Wine, I haven't tried it, but with Cedega it is so easy to use, and the monthly fee is worth it for the sake of Linux gaming. Starcraft works flawlessly.

Why use and support Windows games (and their developers), when there are lots of games available for Ubuntu? If you are looking for commercial-quality, there's a list of commercial games here: http://www.linuxgamingworld.com/games-catalog/
Quake Wars: Enemy Territories just came out, which is awesome. Probably the best FPS out right now. DEFCON and Penumbra Overture are two I would recommend, too.

Me being an "Ubuntu gamer" has a bit of a funny story behind it. Before I started using Linux, I did all of my gaming on consoles. Then I found myself spending so much time on the computer I couldn't justify still owning one, so I sold them all (Xbox 360, PS2, among others). My gaming itch returned eventually, but thus far, it's been more than satisfied by what's available under Linux. The screenshot is of all the games I have installed (the highlighted ones are emulators):

Why use and support Windows games (and their developers), when there are lots of games available for Ubuntu? If you are looking for commercial-quality, there's a list of commercial games here: http://www.linuxgamingworld.com/games-catalog/
Quake Wars: Enemy Territories just came out, which is awesome. Probably the best FPS out right now. DEFCON and Penumbra Overture are two I would recommend, too.
Because the Windows supported game pown the few games supported by Linux... Otherwise I would go Linux 100%. I like to try to play on Linux but I have Windows XP Pro SP3 on 1 HD, Windows 7 Ultimate on a 2nd HD, and Ubuntu 9.04 on a 3rd all of which I can chose which HD to boot from my BIOS start up options which is F8. Plus I have 3 other HDs for my content which I share between my OSes. 6x 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 1 of which is for steam alone, 1 for movies, and the last for what ever else but mainly for my freeware I make for Windows, and the other free content I make.
Sad but true Linux has nothing on Windows Gaming!

You would probably get help a lot faster if you posted a new thread, or found one pertaining directly to your question instead of replying on a thread that's been silent for 7 months. Anyway, here's a link that I found (4th one down on google searching nitto legends ubuntu) that shows how to install wine (super tough) and then install the windows version of the game.

BTW, I personally think software has been way more accessible to me since I switched to Linux. Software repositories make installing programs so simple and quick. Use the link above to figure out how to harness some of the power of Ubuntu, and give us a chance.

Do you have the steam or cd version? You'd need to right-click on the .exe setup file and select open with Wine.
