This may be an old one, but I just discovered it.
If you use the bookmarks toolbar, and the site in question has a favicon, then that icon appears in the toolbar alongside the name, once you've used it.
Now, if you have lots of bookmarks there, it's possible to go to each bookmark's properties and delete their names.
They will then sit much closer together, and as long as you recognise the icon you can still see what they are.
