ok not as grand...but when I lived in Juneau, Alaska there is a wonderful place where the road ends to the north....about a mile hike to Eagle Beach...the rocky coast line there reminds me of Maine....

The coast is very nice, and we like to visit it two or three times a year. But my home and heart is inland Maine, and I find the beauty here in the lakes and mountains. I also like Vermont a lot too, but I'm digressing...

The social and political climate in this state reflects a feeling that there are "two Maines". There's no easy boundaries on the map, but the residents in the more populous areas (mostly southwestern, including Portland) have a different lifestyle than those in the more rural areas.

I sit on the border where I'm at, and look at the rural areas as having great unrealized potential. The people there are either very industrious or disabled in some way, elderly; and quite a few are simply resigned to watching the seasons pass by. Compared to southern Maine, there are few nine-to-five office jobs. Many of us, including myself, commute long distances to have a decent paying job. A lot of small businesses, and I mean really small, one to three-person shops.

Having been a resident of both Maines at one time or another, I know exactly what you mean by "other." As a matter of fact, my beginnings in Linux started in the "other" (northern) Maine in Orono as a matter of fact. I feel that no matter how backwoodsy this state is stereotyped, there have to be people out there willing to try something new and different technology-wise. Here is the model that we should follow in order to get the Governor to view state-wide Broadband Internet as a right, and not just a privilage! The town of Hermon has been serving High Speed Wireless Internet to it's town-folk for years...

I like the wireless Hermon model in your article! There are a couple of related bills in front of the legislature. The first is for the wired model. The second might provide funds for either:

LD 369: An Act To Require High-speed Internet Access for All Maine Residents
This bill requires telephone utilities operating in Maine to provide high-speed Internet access to any Maine resident who requests it, except for residents of unorganized territories.

I am currently gathering more detailed information about the two broadband bills up for vote, and their status in committee.

I am also trying to socially network myself into a position to try and convince Hermon Schools to adopt Ubuntu. I have only talked to a few people so far, but hopefully some n00bs will be showing up here on the forums and on IRC! I'll probably need some help with this, strength in numbers/two-heads are better than one and stuff, ya know.

I live in Brewer, work in Bangor. Been a Linux-only user for about 5+ years now, somehow I never seem to look for 'local' linux users, though Portland ain't really local to Bangor, and vice-versa :D

Women skidder drivers are always hawt, and I wish there was was a good wireless connection (and a free wireless-enabled laptop to go with it :) ) out in the middle of logging land. Then I can idle on irc from out in the middle of nowhere :)

You may have read about her brother being killed in an accident last Wednesday in the Augusta area. Finally, life is a little easier. Course come April 2nd I get hectic again as the baby gets here but that is a good hectic. Working on figuring out what else we need to get recognized. I went to school at University of Maine, Fort Kent. My parents and brother still live there and I put Ubuntu on their machines. I get back there only a couple of times a year but I love it there. I haven't really been inspired to write poetry since I left... the smell of industry is not as inspiring as the smell of pines.

Well I would like to get a group together myself as im a newbie to Linux (few months into Linux let alone new to Ubuntu lol). I will be right up front im very new. So I would love to learn what I can from others and meet others and go from there. Im wondering who out there uses Xubuntu personally. Cuz I would love to furnish Xubuntu CD's. I could burn a ton and have the Xubuntu Logo in the jewel cases and distribute them. I just ordered some Ubuntu CD's though.

Well in all honesty, RAV people in Maine tend to feel that Maine is a lot more than just Portland. It is kind of an internal conflict between the "two" Maines, North and South. I guess most of us are currently in Southern Maine, but hopefully that will change and we can build a truely state-wide presence.

At the same time I personally think the Head Light would be nice looking. :)

I am located in about the middle of the state. We have some members in Augusta and Bangor I believe so we are spreading out.

The other option that was suggest was to include a pine tree and a lobster.

Everyone has heard of the "Maine - the way life should be". I am thinking more of

representing Bangor here, though really even though there are really 2 Maines, I don't think that should be an issue here. Some major things are happening. I have secured us a domain (more to come) and it comes with some good deals. Everyone that wants a e-mail address can have one, we will have space for a subdomain for everyone as well.

This domain will also allow us to have our own forums and mailing list as well as some other good things along the way. I am still looking into getting us a good deal on some t-shirts and hats.

September 15th.

Due to the time constraints that have made it almost impossible for me to get anything done, I feel that it is in the best interest of the team for me to step down. I have already started the process of adding Claydoh as the team lead.

I will still be involved, just not the lead. Ubuntu in Maine has already started to spread but with no time, I cannot help the process out as the lead. So far, we have a great team and I am sure Clay will do nothing but improve it.

We really haven't got this off the ground yet. The guys did a great job setting up the infrastructure, but there's only a few of us, and we've all been really busy with our personal lives. I think we're all still interested, though.

I suspect there will be a time when a lot more Ubuntu fans will come out of the woodwork. The new install tools in Hardy might help that a lot.

Well, this winter's been really hard for everyone I know, and I imagine it's been that way the rest of the group. If we tried really hard to have a get-together, it would probably be a one-time thing that we couldn't keep up. Doing something like staffing an Ubuntu booth at a computer show would probably be a lot more work than we could take on, as well.

So maybe we could look at a lighter project we could do together over the wire that's Maine oriented. One idea could be a localized package or web site with links to Maine radio station audio feeds. I think it would be very cool to "apt-get install maine-radio" and have stations and podcasts show up in rhythmbox.

HI all. I just found this thread. I have been using ubuntu for over a year on both my desktop and laptop. Tried Red Hat and Suse but like ubuntu better.

I retired to Winthrop about 7 years ago from New Jersey. I belong to Central MELUG but not many people show up at meetings and as far as I can tell I am the only ubuntu user.

I have a Dell Inspirion 1440 that came pre loaded with 7.04. I run 7.10 on a desktop I built last winter.

Right now I am thinking about putting VM on one of my machines so I can run Windows XP home edition under it. Unfortunately I have no choice about running windows, I want to listen to Surus satellite radio and they require windows. They use DRM so just loading the windows media codecs won't work. At some point you just have to go with the flow, it's a windows world - <sigh>

Is this group active at all? I would like to get together with other ubuntu users.

We are still around, but honestly it looks like we have too many miles between us and not enough free time to organize anything. If there were enough folks in one part of the state, maybe then there could be a get-together.

There is always irc chat on freenode in #ubuntu-maine I lurk there when I have a free moment, but most of us seem to miss each other :(

Right now I am thinking about putting VM on one of my machines so I can run Windows XP home edition under it.

I found virtualbox simpler (but only a bit) than VMWare Player or Server to run XP Home. I'm running two copies on a fairly recent box with Ubuntu. No major problems, though I do have a crash in one or the other XP home instances every other day. The last upgrade caused me a bit of grief as well until I found the fix in the forums. Even so, I still recommend virtualbox for the simplicity.

Whatever you do, though, install your XP Home, update it with all the security fixes, and then make a clone of it before installing any applications. You'll probably need to use a tool that comes with your virtual machine app to make the clone, sometimes just copying files doesn't do the job right. Then if you hose your registry or get some bugware in it, you'll have a very quick restore.

Hey my name's Joseph I live in Lisbon and love the area hoping to continue coaching on my high school wrestling team and attend Andover College. Ubuntu's quick, the speeds are amazing, the graphics make people do a double take, and everyone's amazed that I haven't had to reformat a hard drive for a long time. A long time in my terms is about three weeks given the fact that I like to test the waters with Open SuSe and such so far Ubuntu is the better. I'll be keeping it for awhile and everyone loves just all of the slide shows and data bases which can be built from scratch on the open-office org technologies. I'm not a programmer but just plain someone who needed an ease of access system with the stone wall protections offered by it's processing and so far Ubuntu has lived up to that image.

Been using Ubuntu now for two years without a problem through all of upgrading and having to restore my system after a power surge Ubuntu has come through on many thousands of levels. Last time I tried using a dial up modem with any Linux distro I discovered that there can be numerous hurdles to overcome and some which may be insurmountable. I managed to get one internal modem to dial out but eventually gave up and just purchased an external modem. The TrendNet external modem was very easy to get working.

If you purchased a new computer with Ubuntu preinstalled it should not be a problem. But otherwise you should research which modems are supported under Linux and choose carefully!

some minutes ago i posted my Hello at the Loco Maine Website ;-).

I will move from Germany to Portland, Maine this year and i want to find some contact with people to talk about Linux especially Ubuntu.
I spend some Time at the University studying electrical engineering and computer science.

I use Ubuntu at my Notebook, it works perfect with the Hardware (except the Webcam) and is much faster than Vista at the same Hardware.

I really got to get a handle on this wireless thing concerning laptops.

I would love to run just Ubuntu on my LapDog but I can't get the thing to work.

Tried about three days of fixes that I've found here there and everywhere but just don't get it.

My brain is fried worse than dead flies on a skiddah.

I was able to get Ubuntu running sweetly on my wife's desktop and I even got Club Penguin to work on it wirelessly for my grandson.

Currently I am running a shiney new Dell in my office with 2 quad processors and 8 Gb of Ram. The machine is definitely a multi-tasker as it monitors my servers and doubles as a host for my accounting software and other related office type junk.

I can boot to, XP-Pro, Windows 7 and Now Ubuntu. Needless to say Ubuntu is the fastest but I still need to keep the ******* stuff around to run certain software packages I can't live without.

My customers all run ******* or Macs and I doubt that I will ever be able to get them over to Linux but you never know. Some of them still use AOL for petes sake.

I've found a ton of posts on it like I said but can't seem to crack it.

I've got the Broadcom BCM4312 in my Dell laptop. All I had to do was install the proprietary driver.

If you haven't tried it already -- System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and then activate the Broadcom wireless driver.

The other thing I would try would be to install the b43-fwcutter package to see if that works. From a terminal: sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Finally got the wireless in this lapdog working.

The onboard, broadcom, is useless. I disabled it and stuck in a pcmia card from an old lappy.

Boom found it, conneced both WEP and WPA

I'm in business and this laptop is going back in the truck ******* free.

First let me start out by saying that it wasn't by choice. The basic jist of the story is this. My father was drug trafficer who was also one of the bigger pot farm growers in Maine. Needless to say he ended up in prison. Anyways, before he ended up in prison he used a lot of the money to help produce and manage a local band from Maine who got pretty big in the New England and California area, but they toured everywhere. During the time that they were touring, my parents felt it would be best to move to NC so that we could be close to my mom's family since my father was gone most of the time and she had medical issues. After a couple albums were produced the band broke up and we stayed in NC. My father has long since been sober and became a christian (as well as myself) about 12 years ago.

I am back in Portland after spending 4 years doing online college up in the back woods of Lisbon, by Lewiston. i went to High School way up at Foxcroft Academy - Dover-Foxcroft.

http://www.ubuntumaine.org/ is not working for me and I'm not sure how current any of the Maine Ubuntu Loco support is but I'm working on a fairly big project right now and would love to restart/ take over/ or otherwise support whatever is available.

I recently purchased ubuntoogle.info (website not even started) which was intended to simply be a central place to work on an Ubuntu derivative integrated with Google services but now with ChromeOS out I'm not so sure there will be a demand. The culmination of the past 2 years researching and developing while going through college has put me in a place where I feel like open source is the key to bringing tech jobs and reducing knowledge loss to the state of Maine.

I am currently involved with the East Bayside Neigborhood Organization (eastbayside.ord - EBNO) who recently recieved a large grant toward sustainable community development. Tuesday and Thursday last week I made presentations which found huge support even though the ears didn't fully understand what I was proposing. I am trying to start an Open Source community development center in the most diverse neighborhood in New England. With 72 languages in our local high school alone I think Ubuntu is the key to bringing everyone together on to the same page and opening the door to further community driven open source development.

I am also still trying to covertly convince Google to choose Portland as it's site for fiber optic network. My ultimate intent is to put Maine on the technology map in a community driven way that I think Maine would sincerely appreciate.

If interested in working with either an Ubuntu/Google derivative or the Portland open source development center or if anyone has any information which might be helpful please eMail me at jeff@ubuntoogle.info. I will need help with all aspects of this as I am literally just a lone ranger with lots of contacts and possible access to a chunk of this grant at this point.

Summer is nice here in Augusta. So is 12.04 LTS after installing gnome 3.5. I think it looks a lot cleaner than unity.

I assume that the bootloader is grub (link) (http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/), so you could always just install it directly. While I have not done Linux-from-scratch for several years, I'm sure it can only be even easier than it used to be. Warning: I haven't read this thread (link) (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351) yet, but it might give you a good idea where to start. May also want to take a look at this link (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1664134) too. Make sure you have an external (and disconnected) backup of all your data before doing anything as is the general advice for any critical OS-related modification. that would have been nice, but Ive tried a number of threads with no help.
I did figure it out by the way. Lucid WONT install a bootloader to anything but specifically SDA. So to get around this I had to go without initially installing a bootloader. Then i downloaded GRUB2, then installed to sda2. Boom, windows bootloader chainloads GRUB2, which loads lucid, or windows. It seems smarter to let the windows bootloader go first because every time windows updates it overwrites the MBR, effectively destroying GRUB.

I'm in concurrence with Valley1967 in regards of if there is a to-do list. I'm not a pro at Linux by any stretch, but am capable in other areas. As a TSG tech for UPS, I did get to dabble in the UNIX servers we were utilizing in the '90's. Of course they quickly (and unfortunately) went by the wayside in favor of Mahwah's hacked and cracked versions of Windows NT. Anyway I do still have a few skills, and since I'm not 'working' any longer, I'd be happy to help if I can. That said, I do live in Presque Isle and can't travel. Other than that, if there is something I can do to further the Linux cause, I'm more than happy to help...

New here too... Using Ubuntu dual boot on a Dell 14z laptop and soon also on a Samsung Series 5. Been running it for about a year now.

Also run a Mac w/OSx.

Virtual box on all for ******* (gotta have Visio).

Work for a startup in MA that's a commercial/open source company. Our product runs on CentOS so I'm more familliar with that dist. The desktop experience is nowhere near as nice on the CentOS/Fedora side though.
