Quick Simple Explanation of just your user name: (no avatar talk, no sig talk, and especially no silly forum psychology talk)

I'll start:

RAV as written in all caps could mean several things:

three-letter acronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-letter_acronym) or abbreviation which may represent:
the Canada Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_Line), formerly the Richmond-Airport-Vancouver Line, a new automated light rapid transit line of the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (TransLink)
RAV-FM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAV-FM), officially CFU758, a low-power radio station broadcasting from Thornhill, Ontario
Reliable AntiVirus (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Reliable_AntiVirus&action=edit), a platform-independent security application developed by GeCAD Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeCAD_Software) and later acquired by Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft)
the petitioner in the case of R. A. V. v. City of St. Paul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._A._V._v._City_of_St._Paul) 505 U.S. 377 (1992), an important United States Supreme Court case involving freedom of speech
the IATA airport code for Cravo Norte Airport in Cravo Norte, Arauca Department (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arauca_Department), Colombia
the Toyota RAV4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_RAV4) or Toyota RAV4 EV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_RAV4_EV), compact crossover SUVs manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporationhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAV_%28disambiguation%29

also (or what it really means is):

The term Rav is also a generic term for a teacher or a personal spiritual guide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rav

I do a bit of teaching or sharing here but not much spiritual guidance but It was named after a custom Tux I once made...

and TUX is of course the Linux mascot
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TUX

so basically my name means:

Teaching (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=teaching) Tux

or

Teaching (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=teaching) Linux mascot

Raśl
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raśl is a Spanish name from French origin. The French Raoul is believed to come from the germanic name Rad-Wulf whose translation is supposed to be close to Wolf-Advisor or wolf's advice. Rodolf, Raymond and Roland share the same origin with Raśl.

"raul" is always taken so i have to add the "_"

I'm portuguese though. I don't agree that it is a spanish name, it's only more common in spain...beats me

Truthfatal: The "Truth" (note the capital "T") seems to have caused a lot of deaths since its inception. It's something I think of every time I see or hear of someone claiming to Know (again with the capital letter) the "Truth."

I prefer my truths with a small "t."

also the title makes it impossible to search for. It's from November 2005, which makes it just slightly older than one year old. I thought you'd merge the threads and edit the title accordingly as you usually do, but your call.

Ive got a dog named slim and the 360 because of that idiot rapper who thinks he is cool and everyone decides that the name slimdog is cool so I have to add something else.

ps: I got my dog (and named him of course) well before that wierdo became famous.

kevin- my first name
f- the first initial of my last name
311- my all time favorite band

Here's a link (http://www.311.com/) to the bands website. My tastes have grown since I started listening to them, but they hold a special place in my heart and apparently user name :p

Soarer
January 28th, 2007, 10:46 AM
"Soarer" quite simply because I have driven a Toyota Soarer (aka Lexus SC400 in the USA) for the last 6 years or so. These are imported from Japan to the UK but never officially sold here, so are moderately rare. Owner's club is here (http://www.toyotaimportsforum.co.uk) if you are interested.

It's easily the most interesting thing about me :)

When I first set up a hotmail account years ago, I was drinking Czech beer at the time (the Internet name country code for the Czech republic is cz). The user name stuck and I have been using it ever since for a number of sites where a user name and password are required.

Still drink Czech beer every so often too! :-)

Cheers!

Tux Aubrey
January 28th, 2007, 11:58 AM
Tux Aubrey is both my username and my Avatar - Tux as Capt. Jack Aubrey (of the "Master and Commander" books by Patrick O'Brian - among the best historical/adventure novels ever written). In one of the later novels, Jack commands a ship called the HMS Bellona. That ship brought an ancestor of mine to Australia in 1797. He (my ancestor, not the fictional Jack Aubrey) was responsible for the oldest surviving piece of public graffiti in this country - his initials carved into a rock on a headland in Sydney Harbour. My kids think that is very cool. Sorry, getting off topic.

JAPrufrock
January 28th, 2007, 05:05 PM
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a poem by T.S. Eliot, who also wrote The Wasteland).

Here are 2 stanzas:

For I have known them all already, known them all:--
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
So how should I presume?

And I have known the eyes already, known them all--
The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase,
And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin,
When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall,
Then how should I begin
To spit out all the butt-ends of my days and ways?
And how should I presume?

RChickenMan
January 28th, 2007, 05:48 PM
When I was in high school, we had a gym teacher who was both racist and talked like a chicken. Therefor, I made my instant messanger screen name RacistChickenMan. This is all fine and well for close friends, but for people I don't really know, well, it seems pretty offensive. I wanted to carry the same name over to forums, so I just abbreviated the offensive part and kept the rest of the name, hence RChickenMan

~LoKe
January 28th, 2007, 05:57 PM
Loke is the Norwegian variation of the God Loki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loki).

Loki Laufeyjarson is the mythical being of mischief in Norse mythology, a son of the giants Fįrbauti and Laufey, and foster-brother of Odin. He is described as the "contriver of all fraud". He mixed freely with the gods for a long time, even becoming Odin's blood brother. Despite much research, "the figure of Loki remains obscure; there is no trace of a cult, and the name does not appear in place-names"[1]. In mythological terms, Loki is not a god, as he has no cult or followers (no evidence has ever been found or even referenced such), rather he is a mythological or mythical being. This is further supported by the fact that he was not a member of Vanir and is not always counted among the Ęsir, the two groupings of gods. Sources inconsistently place him among the Ęsir; however, this may only be due to his close relation with Odin and the amount of time that he spends among the Ęsir (as opposed to his own kin).

Like Odin (though to a lesser extent), Loki bears many names : Lie-Smith, Sly-God, Shape-Changer, Sly-One, Lopt, Sky Traveller, Sky Walker, Wizard Of Lies, and Loftur among others.

My real name is Eric. My girlfriend (Marissa) is Japanese-American, we play poker a lot (Texas Hold'em).. She kept calling me "Koori". Had no idea what it meant until I bought a Japanese-English dictionary.... Koori means Ice in Japanese.. I'm what she calls an "ice cold player" because she couldn't put me on a poker hand.. 23 was my age at the time I came up with the username. I'm 25 now.

Koori is also a group of 'Indigenous Australians from south eastern Australia'.. I didn't know about that one.. But, I'm neither Australian nor indigenous... My intent was strictly the word for ice in japanese.

Now i don't even remember the logic (if there was any!) behind it - max is straight forward, and xen is a play on spelling Zen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen - at the time i was playing Quake 3 a lot and Xaero who is the most difficult bot to beat in it is a Buddhist monk! Well, go figure!

The first forums I signed up for were bicycling forums, where I used RecumbentJoe because I only ride recumbent bicycles - no wedgies for me! :D But when I started signing up for other forums I didn't want to explain what a recumbent was... Mine is almost self-explanitory. Borrowing a line from Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits:

You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords

urukrama
February 5th, 2007, 02:23 PM
Urukrama is the name I received at my ordination (in Hinduism). It is a Sanskrit name that literally means 'he whose steps are wide' and refers to Vamana, a manifestation of God in Hinduism. He subdued a wicked king Bali, who had conquered the 'three worlds': the earthly regions (bhur), the intermediate realm (bhuvah) and heaven (svar).

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vamana):

Vamana in the disguise of a short Brahmin, carrying a wooden umbrella requested three steps of land for him to live in. Given a promise of three steps of land by King Bali against the warning given by his Guru Sukracharya, Vamana, The Supreme God grows so huge that he could cover from heaven to earth, earth to lower worlds in two simple steps. King Bali unable to fulfil the promise of three paces of Land to the Supreme God, offers his head for the third step. Thus Vamana places his third step on King Bali's head and gives him immortality for his benevolance.

Vamana taught King Bali that arrogance and pride should be abandoned if any advancement in life is to be made, and that wealth should never be taken for granted since it can so easily be taken away.

I misspelled 'mugwump' while I was signing up for the forum, and its too late to change it now.

Mugwump is a reference to the first computer game I ever programmed (well, actually copied from a magazine article, I did have to debug it though). It was in BASIC on an Apple ][.

It also refers to a creature created by William S. Burroughs (one of my favorites) I would describe it, but its kind of disgusting.

Those are my two reasons, but Wiki has a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mugwump_%28disambiguation%29) on several other meanings, most of which I like (except for the VD medicine).

The two "l"'s is a modification I made early on because on one forum I went on, someone else had already used the singular form (the cheek!!!).

Steve, after the original and little-known founder of the Beatles, a guy called Steve North. He lasted two days before being replaced by Ringo, but, since he looked exactly the same, was occasionally used to fill in for Ringo on live gigs. The only noticeable difference was that the drumming got better. The K comes from being the 11th letter of the alphabet, which, since 1+1=2, and since this is half the number of sides a square has, makes it the symbol of the Greek god Nsempharyea, who also invented the computer.

Same name I've used everywhere online since before there was a WWW...I was usin' 'Fenryr' back when I had a stack of old 286 machines in a back closet hooked up to a pirated T-1 line and running BBS on'em...

Be honest, all these nosy threads are just an excuse to get post counts up, right? *l*

Mine is a combination

Kiwi = My Nations national symbol
NZ = Short for New Zealand
wiNZ = Kiwi's like to win and I like to win

Hence KiwiNZ

KiwiNZ, have you actually seen a Kiwi Bird in the wild?

Hey, RAV, what part of Oz you in? I'm a former American, no living with my Aussie wife in SA...

Actually I live "Inside the Beltway"(DC),....I put "Oz E. &~Linux Nirvana~Dev" in the location section because there is not a custom selection for which OS do you use....

I use Oz Enterprise; named after the OZ equation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OZ_equation).

Oz E. is short for Oz Enterprise other wise known simply as Oz...a Linux distro that I have developed along with Linux Nirvana...

It's my, uh, name.

Well - not my actual name in full, but a stage name that I went by when I was "in the business".

My friends have called me steveneddy for so long that it's not funny.

I have been steveneddy online for so long that I couldn't be anything else.

You can even search for steveneddy on Google and there are pages and pages of my posts and other crap.

StevenEddy - glad to meecha

Red - Well it's a color, it can mean many things from love to caution.
Nikon - Well it is an optic and imaging company from Japan.

Taking inspiration from the movie Hackers, where a character used the handle 'Lord Nikon'

Thus I decided to use Red Nikon, as my handle.

King of Lag, there is none higher. Rockin' Quake 1 on a 14.4 when cable modems were already standard.

However some games/apps/etc don't allow spaces and kingoflag could be "King o' Flag" (like for CTF mods on games), so I just did King0Lag... which makes people think I have "zero lag"...

oh well it's better than my grade school screen name... "The Foo Master" ha!

Way way back in the mists of time, I was doing a piece of artwork and I wanted something to write on it that seemed kinda ethereal and mysterious. I had the Pitchshifter album PSI nearby, so I used the title of the last track "Shen-an-doah".

I then came to make a site for my artwork and decided to use it as part of the web address. I've been using it as a username ever since. If you stick "shen-an-doah" (with quotes) into Google 6 of the first 10 results (including the top result) are me. Pretty much all the results are either me, the Pitchshifter song, or intructions on how to play the traditional folk song...

Illusha is a cool name!....what does it mean? and if you don't mind me asking, what is it's origin?

In Russian, "Illusha" is an endearing form of the name "Ilya," which according to Wikipedia is the Russified version of "Elijah." I had personally always thought the name is pre-Christian, because it is the name of an old folk hero.

Anyway, my own handle is a name of a character I made up for a fantasy world I created when I was in high school. I was planning on writing stories based on this world, though never got beyond a few sketches. His full name was Erdaron, the First-Born Mage of the Dark Flame, because I was an angsty teenager obsessed with Tolkien's writing. I liked the name, and it's my most frequently used nick.

Apparently, "Erdaron" is also some sort of entity in EVE online, but it has nothing to do with me.

Aurora Borealis

I love the Northern Lights, which is what Aurora Borealis is. It reminds me of the first time I saw them, with a meteor shower that night. I was tempted to bang on the doors of all my neighbors so they wouldn't miss the ribbons of color dancing through the sky with shooting stars bursting through, but I wasn't sure which of my neighbors would appreciate their sleep more than something as spectacular as that, so I refrained. It was just me and the friend I was with at that time watching.
