This (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Windows_Vista_is_ready_for_launch_are_you/articleshow/1479698.cms) article discusses the release of Vista and reports that 5 years, $6 billion, and 5,000 developers went into its development.

I wonder how this compares to a better product, e.g. Ubuntu, in terms of its development.?

I wonder how this compares to a better product, e.g. Ubuntu, in terms of its development.?Direct comparison between different development models (proprietary vs. distributed) wouldn't make much sense, since the individual components that make up an openly developed operating system have long histories and lots of investments behind them, though the same cannot be said of most such operating systems themselves as independent ventures. As an example, think of how old X is, how much it has cost (not in dollars paid for developer time, which is another area where the models differ), how many people have code in it, versus the same for Ubuntu as a project itself.

i read in an article somewhere that debian, if it was developed with non open source means (aka like windows, closed source, internal development) it would take like a really long time (20 years...) and a couple billion dollars. But im glad its free ^^

And still M$ can't get right. A Russian hacker found a vulnerability caused by a memory corruption when certain strings are sent through the Message Box API. Vista Exploit Surfaces on Russian Hacker Site (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/%3Ca%0Ahref=)" :lolflag:

they seem to be trying to recoup there six billion by over-charging uk users:

"The estimated retail price for Windows Vista Home Basic has been confirmed by Microsoft as £179.99, while Vista Home Premium – the operating system Microsoft hopes most home users will choose – will cost £219.99. The price for Windows Vista Ultimate stands at £369.99."

The price for Windows Vista Ultimate stands at £369.99.You could get a pretty decent computer at that price and install Ubuntu on it.

You can get a half decent PC with Vista for that much too. After working out how much Vista Home Premium and graphics card are going to be I decided to just buy a new PC and relegate my just over a year old Dell to Debian duties. It'll make for an amazingly quick Debian machine.
