so, other than Hoary Live, what live distros are out there that are not based on Knoppix? For some reason, any of the knoppix based lives i tried would not boot on the old Pavillion 6873's we're trying to restore.

i would love to install Hoary+XFCE, but the tech teacher wants to see that it can actually run faster before he will let us install it. Hoary live with gnome...

(Morphix is based on Knoppix, BTW)

Another live flavor that I've enjoyed is SLAX based on slackware. You can find that at slax.linux-live.org.

Yes, SLAX is a great LiveCD. PCLinuxOS (Mandriva-based) is another good selection.

PCLinuxOS (http://pclinuxonline.com/pclos/index.html?PHPSESSID=77e9db29cbdfdc7a6055f623fe396 92d) is based on Mandrake

Mandrake Move (http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en/ftp.php3#move) is another choice

Mepis, not sure if it is based on anything

Then there is the ultra-small Puppy (http://www.goosee.com/puppy/)

Linspire, and Suse have demo version Live-cd's as well

i'll second slack as the best live distro i've used. even its choice of kde isn't enough to keep me from saying this..

DamnSmallLinux is knoppix based :) You might be able to get it to work though.

That's too bad none of those worked for you benplaut. I guess your teacher isn't too impressed just yet huh? Keep at it, something will work. Another one I can think of is Zen Linux (http://www.zenlinux.org). It's a LiveCD Debian sid installer. There's a core version (I haven't tried) that might work for you. Give it a spin, see what happens.

Here's another LiveCD list, but this one has good descriptions.
